Invisalign Teen - A Review
Invisalign Teen - What Are Invisalign Braces?
Invisalign teen braces are a new, modern kind of almost invisible braces that are a replacement for traditional metal braces. They are custom made from a clear, medical grade plastic. The patient has a mould taken of their own teeth from which a model of their teeth is created. This 3d model is then put into a computer which then creates a series of aligners (or Invisalign trays) that gradually move the teeth into the correct position.
Each aligner is worn for approximately 2 weeks, before it is switched for the next one in the series. In this way teeth are gradually and comfortable moved into the desired position.
Invisalign teen has many benefits over traditional metal braces. Firstly, they are removable for eating and cleaning which means that teenagers generally keep better dental hygiene than with traditional metal braces. Metal braces can be very difficult to clean and floss around, but this is not an issue with Invisalign.
Secondly, they are nearly invisible. Many teens are extremely self conscious about the prospect of getting braces and Invisalign Teen help to alleviate this by being far, far less visible than traditional braces.
Thirdly, they are less uncomfortable than traditional braces. Whereas traditional braces can cause rubbing and chafing in the mouth, invisalign are made of a smooth moulded plastic. This means that rubbing is eliminated as is the need for specialist dental gels and waxes.
Invisalign Teen - Clincheck
The Invisalign clincheck is one of the most interesting features of the Invisalign system. It is a computer simulation of the movements that teeth will make that the patient and orthodontist are able to see prior to starting treatment.
It also provides a guide for both the patient and provider about how treatment is progressing. An example of an Invisalign Teen Clincheck can be seen below.

Invisalign Teen - Who Can It Treat?
When Invisalign was first launched it was considered only suitable for adult patients with relatively simple orthodontic problems. Modifications to the system however mean that it is now suitable for teen patients and is also able to treat almost every case that metal braces could treat.
Invisalign can now be used to treat:
- Overly crowded teeth
- Widely spaced teeth
How Is Invisalign Teen Different From Standard Invisalign?
Invisalign Teen has several features that are different from adult braces. Firstly, it is designed to allow for partially unerupted teeth, in other words, teeth that are not yet completely through the gum.
Secondly, it has compliance indicators. One of the major reasons that Invisalign was initially considered unsuitable for teens was due to the ability to remove the aligners. To work properly they need to be worn 20-22 hours a day. However, with the launch of Invisalign teen Align added compliance indicators. These are small colored blobs that gradually fade over two weeks when the appliance is worn correctly. In this way parents and providers can check whether the required number of hours wear has been achieved.
Invisalign teen also recognizes that teens may not be as organised as adults and allows for free replacement of up to six aligners should they be lost.
There are specific Invisalign Teen designated providers who specialize in using Invisalign for teens. A list of these, including a region by region search facility is available on the Invisalign website.
What Does Invisalign Teen Cost?
Invisalign Teen costs approximately the same as traditional braces although the cost varies significantly between different areas and different providers. The average cost in the US is approximately $5000 but this is much higher in some parts of the country.
