Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and wonderful experience in a woman’s life, yet it is also one of the most challenging emotionally and physically. Although not everyone is lucky enough to prepare for pregnancy (since not all pregnancies are planned), having the chance to prepare is an advantage. Keep in mind though that no one will ever be able to prepare perfectly, but it is always better to know some vital tips to have a better journey towards motherhood.
Once you have decided to get pregnant, start getting ready. Here are a few tips that will help you enjoy this most challenging adventure in your life:
Achieve a healthier body.
This means that you should start your regular exercises and balanced diet. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables; eat lean meat, fish and poultry. Drink lots of healthy fluids like natural fruit juices and lots of water. Choose your food well by following the Food Pyramid. You can also start drinking milk for pregnant women even before pregnancy. Keep in mind to help your body store enough Calcium and Iron that you will be sharing with your baby. Some women suffer tooth decay and anemia even before giving birth due to lack of these minerals. If you have health concerns, visit your doctor and even before starting any kind of exercise. You can also ask your doctor’s advice for a proper diet which is right for you or give you a prescription for helpful vitamin supplements.
If you are overweight, try to lose your excess weight before getting pregnant. Pregnant women should NEVER try to lose weight during pregnancy because losing weight triggers our body to get rid of toxins and fats which may cross the placenta and be passed to the baby.
Lose weight by spending time with safe exercises like brisk walking for 5 to 10 minutes everyday or 30 minutes 3 to 4 times a week.
On the other hand, learn exercises and a diet that will suit you during your pregnancy to keep healthy. For safe tips, you can always consult your OB/Gyn.
Develop a positive mind set.
One of the many reasons why some women do not have the chance to enjoy pregnancy is the stressors that come and go every day. Keep in mind that, in every one’s life, stressors will always be constant. It is then important to start practicing how to keep a positive mind set when under stress.
When ever you are stressed, your feel bad hormones are triggered and released in your blood stream which may be harmful for your health and also as soon as you are pregnant, these feel bad hormones affect your baby as well. It is vital to be able to keep a habit of developing a proper mind set whenever stressors come before getting pregnant so that you will automatically be able to keep it that way whenever you get stressed during pregnancy. So, start practicing ways that will help you cope with stress positively and do them every time you are stressed so that they will eventually become your habit when coping with stressors as you get pregnant and during pregnancy.
Manage your finances.
As early as you decided to get pregnant, you and your husband should also start saving some money for your pregnancy. One of the helpful ways to save some is to segregate the amount as soon as you get your salary even before paying or buying anything. This will help you prevent your self from spending.
Keep in mind too to give importance to the kind of job that you have and when to file a leave before giving birth. Women who have bigger work loads or more demanding jobs tend to file their leave earlier than women who have less demanding jobs.
If you need additional income, try making your hobby your own little business. Some examples of this may include baking; making beaded jewelries, candle making, crocheting and any hobby that you can sell to your friends and acquaintances and give you extra income. Know the things that your baby needs.
Of course, your baby needs love and caring. But it is also significant that you will be able to give him all the necessary material things upon birth like feeding bottles, diapers, baby clothes and blankets, sterilizers. You must also provide your self with good maternity suction pumps to enhance the production of milk from your mammary gland. Start making a check list so that you will not miss anything.
Prepare your nest well.
If you need to do some general cleaning at your house, do it before getting pregnant. Paint or put all those wall papers and plan where to let your baby sleep. Keep in mind to keep a healthy environment for your baby, an environment that will keep him from harm, diseases or illnesses and a place that will enhance his growth and development.
Be emotionally ready.
Once you decide to get pregnant, think twice. Make sure to be aware that when you are pregnant and already have a baby, there will be many things that you need to adjust. You will also have to realize that you just don’t care of a grown up husband and your self anymore but you will be taking care of a baby who will need much of your time and attention. You will have to wake up on the wee hours at night to feed your baby so that you will not sleep straight for 8 hours or more like you used to. You will need to adjust your usual schedules to meet your baby’s needs.
You will also have to adjust your social life. If you can go out with your friends or your husband anytime you like before, realize that you will no longer be able to do these stuff when you have a baby. You may even have to quit your job if you decide this with your husband to give full time care for your baby. Or if your finances does not allow you to quit your job, you may as well find a good and trust worthy nanny (which may be difficult to find) and adjust your more busy schedule of meeting the demands of your job and being a mother.
These are just few of the many ways to prepare for your pregnancy. Keep in mind though that although you have to adjust for so many things during pregnancy and upon giving birth, your baby will be your source of joy and wonderment once he is born.
