Kneipp Walking, A Water Cure Treatment
Sebastian Kneipp, The Founder
I don´t know if you have heard about Sebastian Kneipp before, or about his natural health treatment. If not, let me introduce to you this wonderful treatment which is so popular in Europe.
I heard about this treatment a few years after I arrived in Germany. It was in the 1980´s. It was my parents-in-law who introduced me one of Kneipp´s treatments on our holiday to Bavaria. It was the Kneipp walking treatment.
Kneipp water cure treatment was founded by a Bavarian, German priest Sebastian Kneipp in the 19th century. Sebastian Kneipp was sick with lung tuberculosis when he was still in college. At that time tuberculosis was not curable yet. One day he had read a book about how cold water cured an illness. With a very weak health and the hope to become healthy again, Sebastian Kneipp applied what he had read in the book. He run exhausted to the very cold Donau river and bathed himself naked with the water up to his neck. He dived once or twice into the cold water and run back home dressed and warmed himself inside his house. He felt warmed and healthier afterwards that he tried bathing in the cold water after a few days of relaxing.
Bathing in the cold water of Donau river was a great success. He regained his good health. Thus, the birth of Kneipp Water Cure. Sebastian Kneipp died at the age of 76.
After my sightseeing in Toerwang with my hubby and my friend Beth, we went to Aschau. Aschau is another village surrounded by beautiful landscapes and mountainsites near Toerwang. We visited the Naturerlebnispfad (Nature Path) in Baernsee, Aschau where we experienced the wilderness of the nature.
It was at the entrance where I discovered the circular movement of the water mill on the small lake. The clear water that was flowing down from the mountains. There was a small house for changing the clothes for swimmers in front of the moor swimming pool, on the left far side of the lake. Both the moor swimming pool and the water cure lake were empty. There were only us, at first.
After taking videos and photos of the surrounding, I took off my shoes, my stockings and rolled my pants up to my knees. Then I went down the few stairs and went Kneipp walking. The water was so cold but I bit my teeth for I know how healthy this Kneipp walking for my health is. The water was not only clear but freezing and stoney. I had to hold the railings which are on the middle of the lake. The railings were there to hold while Kneipp walking.
How to do the Kneipp walking in the nature!
- Barefooted and pants (if you are wearing) rolled up to the knees.
- Slowly put the right and then the left foot on the lake water and bite your lips as it is freezing.
- Hold the railings to avoid bathing on the cold water.
- Slowly walk by, while one leg is out of the water and the other is in the water. Make a few rounds and go back to the starting point which is the stairs.
- Dry the feet with a towel and put on the socks or stockings to make them warm.
- Now you can feel the tickling warmth on your feet.
- Doing this procedure daily for a week or two,you will feel improvements on your nervous system.
Good for illness treatments such as strokes or having been operated on your spinal chord.
How To Kneipp At Home
Kneipp walking can be done at home as well as outside in the lake. I mostly do this at home when it´s winter time to boost my immune system. I just need 2 big buckets where I can put my feet inside. One bucket is with warm water while the other bucket is with cold water. I start putting my feet inside the warm water bucket for about 5 minutes. Then I put my feet to the cold bucket water for a few seconds. Then put my feet again to the warm water for a few minutes then back to the cold water again. I repeat it for the 5th and last time to the warm water. Then dry my feet with a towel. Rub a foot lotion on my feet and then wear my socks to keep my feet warm. After that I relax myself on the sofa and drink a cup of relaxing tea before I go to bed.
This kneipp water therapy for my feet helps me have a good night sleep. I hope you will try it. Enjoy!

There are a lot of Kneipp spa treatments that are offered in some hotels in Bavaria, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. But you can enjoy Kneipp walking at home also especially on wintertime and it helps you feel good and sleepy when you do it before going to bed. Just put cold water in a bathtub or in a wide basin and walk slowly for a few minutes. Then warm and pat dry your feet. You can massage your feet after that, if you like. You will be having a good night sleep. HAPPY KNEIPPING!!!!
