Book Review: This is Why You are Fat (And How to Lose Weight and Get Thin Forever) with Jackie Warner
My Personal Review
This is Why You're Fat
Jackie Warner's revolutionary program to lose weight, get thin and stay thin forever. With her book you will discover once and for all what behaviours are actually making you fat.
Ever get tired of going to the bookstore to look for another book about losing weight only to be bombarded by the hundreds of books out there claiming to make you thin, lose the fat, lose 100 pounds in a week or look 40 years younger by taking herbal supplements X, Y and Z?
There are countless diet and weight loss books out there that require you to follow strict rules about what you can and can't eat and many of the items they want you to eat are just too expensive or hard to find. If that isn't enough, the exercise routines require equipment you don't have in your home or equipment you cannot afford to buy. Why does it have to be so complicated to get thin?
Jackie Warner's new book This is Why You're Fat (and how to get thin forever) is a refreshing kind of diet and exercise book that gets to the heart of why we are fat and her no-nonsense approach gives you an easy to follow (yes, it's easy) program that will ensure you do get thin and stay thin forever. You won't need to buy another diet book ever again.
For those of you out there who aren't familiar with Jackie Warner she is a fitness expert, gym owner, television star and entrepreneur who has several workout DVDs, had a hit show called "Workout" and now has a show called "Thintervention" on Bravo.
2 Week Jump Start
Jackie starts off her program with what she calls her 2 week jump start. The idea is to actually add foods to your diet to help you lose the weight. Imagine that! It's all about changing your body chemistry to reduce your cravings for sweet and fatty foods by adding nutrient-rich foods.
The foods that she wants you to add are relatively easy to find, and its a great way to begin to change your eating habits and get you thinking about what you should be putting in your body.
Jackie doesn't just dictate to you what you can and can't eat in this book, like you have no brain of your own. Her book challenges you to change your mindset and understand the real reasons why you got fat in the first place and what you can do to change it.

A Realistic Approach to Dieting
Jackie's approach to dieting is eat clean for 5 days and then have 2 treat meals on the weekend so that you don't feel deprived. There is nothing worse than knowing there are yummy delicious foods that you can't touch! This just makes us want the bad stuff soo much more!
By not depriving yourself of anything, you never feel that you have to over-indulge and you are less likely to fall off the "eat-clean" wagon during the week. I call this approach realistic, because let's face it, when you're used to eating chocolate and cheeseburgers on a regular basis, suddenly eating "clean" for 5 days seems daunting to say the least. This way there is a light at the end of the tunnel and you'll have a sense of accomplishment by the end of the week. You'll realize that you really can do it!
Sugar: The Real Enemy
"The biggest reason people get fat is sugar." - Jackie Warner
It's the 9 gram rule: Nothing you eat should contain over 9 grams of sugar, according to Jackie.
It's refreshing for someone to finally address the overload of sugar in many of the foods we eat from ketchup to beer to canned baked beans. Jackie takes the focus off fat as the source of the problem and places it squarely on sugar.
Sugar causes obesity. Sugar grows cancer. Sugar gives you wrinkles.
Jackie talks about the effects that hormones have on your body and your body's ability to lose weight and get healthy, something that is finally starting to gain exposure in the public.
No More Crunches
With This is Why You're Fat, Jackie doesn't focus too much on abs. Her exercises are not about building layers of muscle, but toning them instead.
Her book includes a full circuit training workout to strengthen your muscles, because muscles help burn calories when you're not doing anything. The pictures are clear and the exercises are easy to follow.
Regarding cardio: she gives some suggestions about which cardio exercises are best. With cardio the time limit is 20 minutes, no more, no less. It's about intensity and focus instead of doing aerobics for an hour. Who has time to do that?
Jackie's mantra is; less (exercise) is more!
Other Goodies Included in Her Book
In her bookJackie includes some very useful extras that can really help you get started losing weight and changing your eating habits.
- There is a sample food journal with a daily checklist to make sure you get your daily intake of protein, veggies, fruits, grains and fats.
- A 31 day menu if you're not sure what meals are best for your body.
- 44 pages of recipes that tell you how much sugar and fat is in each serving and these recipes come from her sample menu.
- A training log to keep track of your daily workouts.
- Is Organic Food Better?
A British study concludes that conventionally grown food is just as nutritious as organically grown food. The British study is controversial and questions the high price of organic food and claims of the organic food movement.
- Delicious Alternatives to Milk
Move over milk! This review of six delicious alternatives to milk gives you the low down on all the nutrition benefits and downsides for each milk alternative so you can decide which one is best for you and your lifestyle.
Downside to Her Diet
In the introduction to her book, Jackie claims that her program she has created is for anyone, "no matter what their geographic location or income level" is. I have to disagree with Jackie on that point.
Yes, her book is very easy to follow. She explains things clearly and writes as if she's right there beside you, helping you along. For the most part the foods she wants you to eat can be found in any grocery store. However, she wants you to eat organic when possible and there are certain supplements she wants you to put in smoothies and to take along with your daily vitamin. Supplements can be pricey, but what's more pricey is organic food, especially organic meat. I live in Canada and the price for organic meat (if you are fortunate enough to live where you can even buy it) is at least 3 or 4 times the price of regularmeat you buy in the average grocery store.
In that regard, I don't think this diet is easy for anyone like myself who doesn't have extra cash to throw around on organic salmon or chicken. If I could afford it (or find it) I would buy it, but I can't.
It's a small blip compared to everything else this book has to offer if you are looking to lose weight and get thin forever. Overall, I'd say it's still one of the best diet and exercise books out there. I recommend anyone brave enough to embark on yet another diet to try and lose weight to pick up her book. It's well worth the price.
And you don't have to take my word for it. Check out the amazing reviews this book has on Amazon.com.
