On May 18, 2011 in London, the Guinness World Records through the complete and authentic documents presented, confirmed that the oldest human being living today is a centenarian from Carangola, Brazil.

She is MARIA GOMES VALENTIM, a great, great grandmother, who is 114 years and 313 days reckoned as of May 18, 2011. Her mother gave birth to her on the 9th day of July, 1896 in Carangola, Brazil where she never changed address up to this writing.

In 1946 after 33 years of happy and contented married life, Valentim felt terrible grief with the passing of her beloved husband Joao. She became a widow at 50 years of age

Their marital union was blessed with one son, 4 grandchildren, 7 great grandkids and 5 great, great, grandkids.

As the records stand, Valentim is older by 48 days than BESSE COOPER, the displaced titleholder whose crown will now be Oldest Living North American. Cooper is from Monroe, Georgia, USA.

The once comely lady Valentim reveals her life’s longevity secrets to a healthy and balanced diet. Every morning she consumed a roll of bread with coffee. She ate fruits and drank milk with linseed at times.

Born with strong hands, Valentim can still eat on her own. She drank wine at times.

Guinness World Records Editor-in-Chief, Craig Glenday, said: “Never has a successful claim for longevity emerged from Brazil – until now.”

Plenty of claimants from Brazil before were turned down because of false or lack of authentic documents.

According to officials of Guinness World Records, late-life birth records are not proof of birth but may serve as identification.

“Applicants must have original proof of birth issued within 20 years of the birth and proof that the person alive today is the same person in the original birth record.”

Maria Gomes Valentim’s reign as the ‘Oldest Living Person’ is Brazil’s first super-centenarian to officially get recognition.
