MORE Common Sleep Disorders

The field of sleep research is growing rapidly as it is being discovered that millions of people suffer from some form of a sleep disorder. The effects of parasomnia and other sleeping problems limit the amount of quality sleep you get each night. This in turn prevents the body from fully recovering and repairing itself. This makes you vulnerable to a whole host of other illnesses and problems. So getting a good night’s sleep is critical to your general wellness.

There are a lot of different types of sleeping problems. Some of which are very serious and require medical attention and some that are minor. A lot of the less serious sleep problems people have are caused by cheap or worn out mattresses. A quality memory foam mattresses has been proven to provide a much better sleep experience. For some people this is the only change they need to make to greatly improve their sleep.

Other types of sleep disorder are more serious and will require more than a new mattress. These include problems like: insomnia, hypersomnias, sleep terrors and sleep walking, sleep apnea, and narcolepsy. Some of these problems are very serious and require you to see a doctor.

Sleep apnea is a very serious sleep disorder. It occurs when you actually stop breathing while you are sleeping. This can happen once per night or hundreds of times. Obviously if you stop breathing your body is not getting oxygen so this can be potentially very hazardous as well as obviously ruining your sleep. There are two basic types of sleep apnea. The first is obstructive sleep apnea. This is the most common type and occurs when the airway is physically blocked by the soft tissue at the back of the throat which collapses while the person is asleep. The other type is central sleep apnea which is rarer and more serious. This occurs when even though the airway is open, the brain fails to tell the body to breath.

The most common sufferers of sleep apnea are overweight males over the age of forty. Having a large neck and large tonsils can also contribute to the likelihood of developing this problem. Sleep apnea can leave you feeling unrested in the morning which can lead to reduced energy levels and lowered performance throughout the day at work or school. Since it is a chronic condition, the sufferer may not be aware they are not rested because that is the way they always feel. If sleep apnea is not treated it can lead to more serious problems than fatigue such as hypertension, stroke, or even heart attack. If you think that you are suffering from this then it is important to see your doctor. He or she will most likely send you for a sleep study in a lab where they monitor your vital signs while you sleep.

Another category of sleep problems is parasomnia. This includes both minor and serious sleep problems, all of which involve involuntary or unnatural movements or behaviors. They include sleepwalking, which affects 17% of children and 4% of adults. Also included are night terrors in which the person wakes up in a panic, often screaming. It can also result in real bodily harm from running into walls or other obstructions when the person runs in a state of confusion. This affects 3% of adults with symptoms that range from very mild to very violent.

Another form of parasomnia is teeth grinding. This can cause serious wear and damage to the teeth and jaw. There is also restless leg syndrome and periodic limb movement disorder. These both involve involuntary movement of limbs that can cause sleep disruption. And the disruption is often not just for the sufferer but for their bed partner as well. So, one sleep problem can ruin a good night’s sleep for two people. Often the bed partner is the one who becomes aware of the problem and can make the sufferer aware.

These more serious sleep issues require help from your doctor. Either medication or treatment may be prescribed. For more minor sleep problems, memory foam mattresses can greatly improve the quality of your sleep. They contour to the body so that they do not create individual contact points but rather support your whole body. This reduces the number of times that you will roll over and disturb your sleep. Most memory foam mattress users report waking up in exactly the same position they fell asleep in. This is a good sign of a solid, restful night’s sleep.
