Omega 3 fatty acid benefits
Benefits of fish oil are many and it is due the component omega-3 fatty acids – DHA and EPA. Fish oil is the main source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Fish oil is derived from fish liver and fish tissues.
Reduces the risk of heart disease
It is well known that fish oil lower LDL in blood and raise the level of HDL cholesterol which is the good cholesterol. By doing so, it reduces the risk of heart disease and heart attack. It also lowers blood pressure.
Protects brain and heart
It dissolves blood clot or thrombus that is formed when arterial plaques get loose from the arterial walls. These clots can travel to the brain and cause stroke. These can get stuck in heart blood vessel and block blood supply and cause heart attack. By dissolving those, it protects brain and heart.
It has anti-inflammatory effects, especially EPA is very useful in preventing inflammation. So it is useful in inflammatory conditions like arthritis, cystitis, or any other inflammation of the body. Two to three grams of fish oil daily can reduce rheumatoid arthritis pain and swelling.
Fish oil helps with depression
Research has found that fish oil is helpful to alleviate depression, bipolar and other forms of mental disorder. It improves brain function. It is found that decreased levels of DHA have been related to memory loss, bipolar disorder, depression, attention deficit disorder, autism and general learning difficulties and alzheimer. For proper brain function fish should be consumed at least two to three times a day. Low levels of DHA can cause memory loss. The omega-3 fatty acids are an essential part of the brain structure and function.
Protects from Breast, Colon and Prostate Cancer
Omega 3 fatty acid is found to help prevent three of the most known forms of cancer - breast, colon and prostate. Omega 3s do this in three ways. They stop the conversion of a normal healthy cell to a cancerous cell, it inhibits cancerous cellular growth and causing cellular death, of cancer cells.
Study has found that adding fish oil can reduce the symptoms of asthma in children and adults. So taking fish oil daily will benefit people suffering from asthma. It really helps to reduce the symptoms of asthma.
Reduce symptoms of SLE
Research done on SLE, found that EPA help reduce symptoms of systemic lupus erythematosus, an autoimmune disease with symptoms of fatigue and joint pain.
Clinical study showed fish oil is effective in preventing macular degeneration. Study with 350 people who had macular degeneration and 500 without macular degeneration found that people with a healthy diet of omega-3 fatty acid and more fish in their diets were less likely to have macular degeneration.
Dose of fish oil should be between 500 mg to 1000 mg per day. People with heart disease should be taking 1000 mg per day. Fish oil benefits can be obtained also by eating fish two to three times a week.
