Meditation as I know is not just a calming experience; it is not some rhythmic chanting or some weird behaviour. Meditation to me is a positive experience, an enriching one, enriching thoughts, emotions and physical health. Meditation often sounds complicated; needing a lot of time effort and of late has been taken to the level of the mumbo jumbo. For me meditation is to exist, to be filled with abundant life. To meditate is to be filled with good health mental. emotional and physical. It is an experience of self in the positive and expanding my limits to reach my fullest potential. I have arrived that cross road of life to which every woman at some point comes to, where you are at your worst physically and thereby mentally and emotionally too, call it the mid life crisis or what ever you want to, the label is not important. My hormones have started to act weird and mood swings have become the order of the day. More than swings they have been more at the lower end of the spectrum than up in the last few days. Being the fighter that I am I have decided to delve deeply into the inner recesses of my soul for answers and strength. I remembered that I have a great weapon in my artillery – the weapon of meditation to fight the good fight.
Christian meditation techniques - feeding of the spirit
My first understanding of meditation comes from the scriptures; a few years ago I became acquainted with it. Before I go into meditation per say, I need to go into the composition of man – Man is made up of spirit, soul and body. The spirit is what some people call energy or positive energy, the spirit longs or searches for something or someone; this seeking is something which I understand as God or the knowledge of God. The mind searches for knowledge of the world, the knowledge to make life enjoyable and the body seeks its own gratification; I don’t think that needs much explanation here.
When we feed the spirit we reach higher life or abundant life, the soul/mind that is fed is filled with inquisitiveness and a great desire to know more, while the body that is pampered seeks indulgence and gratification at any cost. Our mind slowly gets into the rut that the body is in and drags the spirit into it. This may seem like a digression from our discussion but we need to understand this if we need to understand meditation. Meditation is feeding of the spirit, to get mind and body to a higher ground and more abundant life.
Meditation for health, Mental, physical and emotional
Meditation as I know it, has four aspects to it, Word, thought, vision and action. It is found in the book of
Joshua 1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.
This tells me meditation leads to success, success that you create with your thoughts. Another scripture taken from the Psalms 49:3 - My mouth shall speak wisdom, And the meditation of my heart shall give understanding. Meditation brings me wisdom and understanding and I would love to have both.
Some forms of meditation do insist that you keep your mind blank, a very hard proposition indeed. As for me before one thought gets half a life, there are hundreds of others that are creeping out of crevices. I prefer Christian meditation over the others.
Meditation Techniques and Benefits of meditation
The Meditation that I follow is simple, positive, healing and nurturing in nature.
I shall describe the process of meditation to you in the easiest way that I can think of. I start with the word, in my case it is a scripture, so we shall use a scripture for illustration.
Psalm 139:34 says “I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”, I am taking exactly eleven words for my meditation, you could do with anything between three and fifteen as appropriate for you.
These words are very appropriate for my current situation so I have chosen them. Now I find a quiet place, a restful position, if you cannot meditate without going to sleep don’t go near your bed, as for me my bed is the best place.
I start with the word, I mouth the words softly to myself and employ the power to visualize the words. As my mouth voices the words, my mind is employed in understanding the word with two facets of my mind, visual and conceptual. This is how I go.
Mindfulness meditation - christian meditation
Now I bring in understanding and zoom in, I tell myself that God has taken so much care and invested much thought and feeling into making me special. It is never said so of any other part of creation except about man. I understand that God is extremely careful to make me exactly the way I look, the way I think, the way I act and the way I emote. I was not an accident. I was not a product out of assembly lines, though I may have come from the lust of man, my very essence is pure, so special and so unique to me that there is only one me. I go on to understand that I am wonderful, I am talented, I am precious and I am valued in the eyes of my Creator, and I am the apple of His eye. I start to thank him for what he has done for me and this attitude of gratitude reinforces the knowledge that has been imbibed.
Psalm 119:15 says, 15I will meditate on Your precepts, And contemplate Your ways. 16I will delight myself in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word.
All this understanding is accompanied by some powerful visualization and imagery that run hand in hand on the screen of my mind. I now bring into the whole format the emotional aspect of what I am now zooming into my conscious mind stream, I go further to take pleasure in what I am meditating on. This is the third dimension of learning that I have employed and by far the most powerful tool, this seals my memory with the newly downloaded information. I go on to include other scriptures which are in line with this thinking to expand my understanding and I spend about twenty minutes on these lines. When I am through, my whole being reverberates with the powerful thought that I have chosen to meditate upon. My whole body vibrates with energy and mind is stilled and calmed down from all the pressures facing it. My heart rate, my breathing is now even and my emotions are now stilled in my new found security.
Meditation and action
The next step in the meditation technique is to act on the Word. There is no pause between meditation and action. The action is just implementation of what is imbibed in meditation. The very fact that I write at a difficult moment of my life so far is a testimony to it. What I have imbibed in meditation, is that I have something of value within me, and now I pass it on to others who may benefit from it. I am one who is resilient. Nothing can keep me down further than it should. I rise up to push this feeling of utter despair and physical inability to the lowest level. I will overcome it, the spirit will soon penetrate the mind and the newly imbibed knowledge soon infiltrates the body making me healthy and whole.
The fact that I have now, in a matter of an hour, used the power of meditation to whip my mind into writing this piece allows me to be happy, feel good about myself, and helps me appreciate my ability to be resilient. As I always say, happiness is just one decision away. I have decided to be happy, come what may, physical pain, emotional turmoil, and mental agony not withstanding - I win, I always win. That for you is the power of meditation, in mind and body.
Christian Meditation is a process of renewal
Though the exercise may not seem to be difficult at first, you may find your mind wandering. You may find yourself thinking about all else, other than what you set to meditate upon. Practice makes perfect. Practice helps you gain mastery. Every other art or skill we acquire in life requires attention, time, effort, dedication and importantly, your will or decision to succeed. Meditation is no different, do it consistently over a period of time and you will be filled with peace. Meditation is not just twenty minutes a day it is a way of life.
