Aromatherapy Essential Oils for Pregnancy & Morning Sickness
It is important to take note that using essential oils during the first trimester of pregancy can create medical complications. Except for the morning sickness remedy below, avoid the use of aromatherapy until the fourth or fifth month to avoid any problems.
Do not, under any circumstances, use the following essential oils if you are, or are actively planning to become, pregnant:
- clary sage
With all of that said, aromatherapy can be a powerful tool for fighting the discomfort that too often comes along with carrying a child. Use these safe and effective recommendations to ease morning sickness, indigestion, fatigue, edema, and cramps, and reduce the stress of impending labor.
For Morning Sickness...
Please note: This is the only aromatherapy treatment I recommend using during the first three to four months of pregnancy, but even by itself, it works wonders.
I suggest the purchase of a diffuser for maximum convenience and efficiency in the use of essential oils. If you own one with a timer, set it to 10 minutes before your alarm clock. Otherwise, upon waking, add 3 drops each essential oils of peppermint, spearmint, ginger, and lemon to your aromatherapy diffuser.
If you choose not to invest in a diffuser, 4 drops of any of these oils on a tissue or handkerchief make it easy to inhale the aroma before and after meals, or as needed.
For Edema & Swelling...
For edema of the feet and legs, a massage blend with essential oils of lavender, cypress, and juniper relieves bloating and fluid retention. Combine 3 drops of each with 30 ml of an organic carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond, apricot kernal, or even the extra virgin olive oil from your kitchen cabinet! Massage gently in long strokes over the calves and feet, careful not to put too much pressure on the ankles or heels, as some pressure points in these areas can induce labor.
For Muscle Aches & Cramps...
Combine 3 drops each of essential oils of roman chamomile and lavender in 30 ml of carrier oil and rub lightly into cramped area. If massaging the foot area, be wary of applying too much pressure, because of afore-mentioned contraindicated acupressure points.
For Fatigue & Moodiness
With so many hormonal changes occurring in your body, the change in diet, and the lack of caffeine, you're bound to experience some measure of moodiness and fatigue. Utilize your diffuser to lift your spirits and your energy level by adding 3 drops essential oil of grapefruit and 2 drops each lavender, roman chamomile, and orange. This blend induces simultaneous relaxation and rejuvenation, helping you face the challenges of pregnancy head-on.
Alternatively, blend the above oils into 60 ml of carrier oil and rub lightly into your temples and upper chest three times a day, or as needed.
