Natural Remedies for Mouth Ulcers
So Small, Yet So Painful
Like a splinter in your skin or a blister on your foot, a mouth ulcer can be debilitating for so small a sore. When I get them, it becomes difficult to eat certain foods, especially ones that are spicy or tangy. And then there's the complete annoyance of it! My tongue constantly goes to the sore, reminding me several times an hour that it's there, hoping that it's severity has subsided.
As someone who has struggled with them all my adult life, I have found out more about them as well as how to treat them naturally. Many blogs out there show you how to mask the pain. I will show you how to make them disappear.
A Sign of Something Bigger
That pesky mouth ulcer is an outward warning of something much greater going on inside your body. It is telling you that your body is in a bit of an acidic state. When your body is a tad acidic, it doesn't always announce itself in the form of an ulcer, but sometimes it does.
Why is acidity bad? The biggest reason is that it provides a breeding ground for CANCER to grow. This is why you want to deal with this acidity as soon as possible. You need to rectify this imbalance. Besides the cancer, a body that becomes too acidic can become toxic and you can die. Blood and chemical functions within the body need to be kept at a certain pH level.
Besides mouth ulcers, here are some common symptoms that tell you your body is acidic:
- nausea, sometimes flu-like
- poor quality of sleep
- lethargy (sometimes)
- dehydration, heat stroke (you stop sweating)
If you let acidity go on for too long, you'll end up needing an IV at the hospital. It's no joke. You body is missing valuable minerals and it's important that you replace them as soon as possible! Read on to learn how.
Taken from the website, Mind Body Green:pH stands for power of hydrogen, which is a measurement of the hydrogen ion concentration in the body. The total pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with 7 considered to be neutral. A pH less than 7 is said to be acidic and solutions with a pH greater than 7 are basic or alkaline. Our ideal pH is slightly alkaline - 7.30 to 7.45. You can test your pH levels regularly by using a piece of litmus paper in your saliva or urine first thing in the morning before eating or drinking anything.
I highly recommend you go to the Mind Body Green page and read how acidity affects all areas of your body in adverse ways.
On a website called Natural Health School, they explain what having an acidic pH can mean: "This condition forces the body to borrow minerals—including calcium, sodium,
potassium and magnesium—from vital organs and bones to buffer (neutralize) the
acid and safely remove it from the body. Because of this strain, the body can
suffer severe and prolonged damage due to high acidity—a condition that may go
undetected for years."
Their list of problems associated with acidity include things like weight gain, cardiovascular problems, joint, muscle and bone problems, and premature aging. Because they assert that you may not know you're acidic, if you have a mouth ulcer, be glad that your body is TELLING you that something is wrong rather than being silent.
How Did This Happen?
I know you're dying to know...how DID this happen? Typically it's not one thing but a combination that strips your body of nutrients little by little. Here's a list of acidity triggers:
- coffee, tea (black)
- soda including soda water
- excess sweating, heat stroke (stop sweating)
- lack of sleep
- poor eating, especially fried foods
- excessive salt and/or sugar
The reality is that not everyone becomes acidic if they indulge in too much of any of the food triggers like coffee, tea or alcohol. Some of us are just more prone to it. My husband drinks at least three cups of coffee a day and has no acidity problems. I drink one Starbucks and my stomach hurts for the rest of the day! It's not fair but it's reality that some of us have to live with and be aware of what we eat and drink. If I don't, I can make myself feel very ill.
Here are the natural remedies I alluded to earlier. Do your research and you'll see that I'm right on the money. Don't cover up the symptoms, cure yourself. The process can take a couple of days, but at least your moving in the right direction.
- lemon juice; it's acidic outside your body but turns into an alkaline inside your body. I like to add it to water.
- water; get it filtered, alkaline water is the best. Beware of bottled water. Some is acidic. You can tell by how it feels in your mouth. If it leaves your mouth feeling dry and not satisfying, it's probably acidic.
- vitamin C; take extra. Whatever you don't need, your body will "dispose of" easily.
- bananas and watermelon; the effect can be instantaneous if you have the flu-like symptoms because they are high in potassium
- dark,leafy vegetables, broccoli, avocado
- alkaline pills; these can be purchased at health food stores. The ones I got had strips for you to check your body's acidity and monitor it. Take the pills several times a day until balance is restored.
- baking soda; 1/4 cup water mixed with 1/4 teaspoon baking soda. It tastes terrible but there's no faster relief. Do this several times a day.
- coconut water; loaded with natural electrolytes like potassium.
Remember, it will take several days for the sore to disappear completely. You'll know it's working when the ulcer's fire begins to die.
While you want to elevate the potassium levels in your body, I didn't put potassium pills on the list because taking too much can be dangerous. Do so under a doctor's care.
The goal is to put alkaline things into your system to counterbalance your acidity and bring it back to a neutral level.
Lots of flavor choices...I liked the Pink Guava!
Comes with strips for testing Ph levels. Gives the fastest, easiest relief.
