Natural Ways to Quit Smoking

If you've decided to quit smoking then you know that it can be difficult.  That's why you want to know some of the best ways to quit smoking safely and healthily.

When thinking about the most natural way to quit your habit the first thing that you probably think about is going cold turkey.  Of course this method isn't the easiest to do, especially if you've been smoking for a long time.  In fact studies have shown that quitting cold turkey is only successful for those who have taken up cigarettes within the last 12 months. 

So the next step that people take is to cut down the amount of cigarettes that they smoke gradually.  The idea is that each few days you reduce the number of smokes you have by one or two.  This way you don't have such as shock from the nicotine withdrawal as it is gradually being reduced over time.

Many people say that this has worked for them, but others say that they get obsessed about when they can have their next smoke since they are being 'rationed'.

There are also a number of herbal remedies on the market that claim success however I suggest that you research these products carefully as many are not as 'natural' as they claim to be.

Acupuncture is another natural way to quit smoking that is gaining in popularity.  This Traditional Eastern practice involves placing very thin needles at certain pressure points in the body and claim to cure many different ailments.

The way it works with quitting smoking is by suppressing the urge to have a smoke and detoxing the body at the same time.  It can be expensive though as usually many sessions are needed for the treatment to be successful.

And finally there is Hypnotherapy.  Being hypnotized into not wanting to smoke again has proven successful for many ex-smokers.  Again this method isn't cheap as the cost of a fully trained hypnotherapist can be expensive, but the results are usually good for those who are motivated to quit smoking. 

It works by changing the way the mind thinks about smoking and cigarettes and 'reprograms' the brain to think negatively about the habit and also ways to combat cravings. 

This method is also best for pregnant women who want to know how to stop smoking as it allows them to stop immediately and work on their cravings for cigarettes/nicotine at the same time.

You can also get tapes and DVD's of hypnosis sessions that you can do at home.  While they are not as effective at stopping smoking as being with a professional one on one, they can be a good budget alternative.

Natural Ways to Quit Smoking Cigarettes

Another natural way to quit smoking cigarette's is find a healthy subsitute for the habit.  That means everytime you feel the urge to light up, you do whatever you've chosen instead.

Many people substitute food for cigarettes (which is the reason why people gain weight after smoking) but there are many other things that you can do instead.

Usually you want something in your mouth, so that might be gum, an all day sucker lollipop or something healthy like carrot sticks. 

Next you want to distract yourself.  So you need to find something that needs your concentration like watching tv, exercise, painting or the like.

Finally you need to avoid situations that you are likely to want a cigarette.  Drinking is a major trigger since there is usually smokers around you, and alcohol lowers your inhibitions to stay strong.

So you either need to avoid those situations or take a buddy along to help you to get through it.
