Nightlife Supplements: Mood Enhancement: GABA

Mood Enhancement:GABA

Mood enhancing supplements may be used, when you’re stressed out, nervous about that big presentation, to lift yourself back up after a setback, or mustering up the courage to talk to that cutie you’ve been making eye contact with from across the room. Mood enhancing supplements may provide anti anxiety effects, feelings of well being, and even mental euphoria. Some like kava, gaba, and l-theanine have a quick onset, while something like St. John’s wort may take up to a few weeks to exhibit it’s full effects. Some have few interactions and side effects, such as GABA, while others like St. John’s Wort, must be taken much more carefully. In future articles on Mood Enhancement, many different options will be profiled in depth, with my tips and experiences added in for the reader’s benefit.

Today’s article will focus on GABA. GABA, a.k.a. Gamma-Aminobutryic Acid, is a natural calming amino acid that is manufactured from the amino acid glutamine, and glucose. It is classified as a neurotransmitter, and has effects on the nervous system. Some people with anxiety, panic disorders, and depression may not manufacture sufficient levels of GABA. While the safety of GABA supplementation has not been fully demonstrated in human trials, at the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with GABA.

Other Effects:

GABA may also promote fat loss by assisting in the up regulation of Human Growth Hormone (HGH).This is good, because HGH production declines as we age. GABA taken near bedtime may also give more vivid dreams and enhance the sleep cycle, leading to more energy during the day.

JC’s Field Report:

I like GABA, for it’s quick onset, high rate of effectiveness, and no interactions/side effects. I’ve found good calming, de-stresssing effects within 15 minutes from the chewable or sublingual types of GABA. The tablet, or capsule types can take several times that to kick in.

The first I tried was GABA Calm by Source Naturals. This blend has 100mg of GABA in a sublingual tablet. It has a decent orange flavor. As the tablet dissolves, it does have a bit of a gritty texture, but it’s not a big deal. Non drowsy, calming effects were felt in roughly 10-15 minutes after placing the tablet under the tounge.

This is a decent product, with 30 tables being availible for well under $10. Dosing for this product is 1-3 tables daily, as needed.

The second I tried was PharmaGABA by Natural Factors. This comes in chewable tablets that have a fruity tasting flavor. I chewed 2 tablets and withing 15 minutes, felt fairly strong, de-stressing, calming, and mood lifting effects. This product is the stronger of the two, by far, and the price does reflect that.

Dosing is 1-2 tablets, up to three times a day as needed.
