Overcome Insomnia

Insomnia is a frightful problem and unfortunately our modern, stressful lifestyle has resulted in more and more suffering from it. There are luckily treatments for insomnia available, both relatively simple lifestyle alterations you can try for yourself, and if they are not effective, your doctor or therapist will have experience in insomnia treatment.

Tips to Overcome Insomnia

Let’s list a bunch of simple tips to help you overcome insomnia. In general it’s important that you feel relaxed, healthy, and that you get into a regular schedule.

Attempt to get to sleep around the same time every night and wake up at about the same time every morning, weekends included, and do not nap throughout the day, as naps will make you feel less sleepy in the evening.

Stay away from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol, particularly as bedtime gets nearer, so at any time after noon, do not drink coffee, tea, or other drinks with caffeine.

Regularly exercise throughout the day, but never near bedtime since the stimulation will make it difficult for you to get to sleep.

Eat your meals on a schedule and do not have any large meals late in the day.

Use your bed for sleeping, or sex, only, and do not eat, read, or watch television there. Attempt to ensure that where you sleep is comfortable, being dark, quiet and a reasonable temperature.

If it is good for children it is also good for you, so follow a regular routine which will make you relaxed prior to going to bed, such as playing music, enjoying a book, or taking a bath.

Should you not feel sleepy, get up and do some activity that does not excite you very much, and do not return to bed until you are feeling sleepy again.

If you frequently lay awake worrying, make a list of things that you need to do before you get ready to sleep, and this will make it easier for you not to concentrate on your troubles during the night.

Practice some type of relaxation technique such as progressive muscle relaxation or any other relaxation and stress relief exercise prior to going to bed.

Sleeping pills might be very helpful if you are dealing with chronic insomnia. But on the other hand, sleeping pills can contribute to your sleep troubles since a known side effect is daytime sleepiness which will increase your desire to nap during the day, affecting your ability to get to sleep a night.

Are These Tips not Enough?

If you find that the things listed here are not sufficient, I’d suggest you see a doctor or a therapist specializing in treatment of insomnia. There are, as mentioned, medications available, and many find that regular sessions talking to a specialist is very beneficial. Do not give up on your sleep, with the right treatment and persistence, soon you will have the healthy sleep you crave!
