The uses of ozonated water vary from industry to industry and from application to application. Even the type of delivery of the ozone varies - from high voltage and very large expensive generators to ozone used in hot tubs to many others.

For horses or the equine industry, ozonated water has been found helpful in a manner similar to Bactine® but a non-chemical antiseptic. For you see Bactine is a brand name for a liquid that was introduced in the 1950 that is touted as the original first aid for fighting infection. Horses especially in warm climates it has been found are susceptible to a skin irritation, a type of dermatitis that has been called "scratches". While ozone water will not cure, ozonated water is registered with the EPA as a sanitizer and use of the ozone water on the horses skin has been found helpful in combating the common horse skin irritation called "scratches".

Typically the use of ozonated water is seen in bottling plants and in vegetable/fruit wash stations. But the use of this organic sanitizer doesn't end there. Ozonated water has many great uses, journey with me as we explore a few more of the possibilities.

Man has now harnessed the natural disinfecting properties of ozone or activated oxygen and we are now able to do this both safely and effectively, yet, it is up to us to use these tools correctly and consistently.

If you are a restaurant with high volume, you need to be assured the level of the ozone will remain constant.

NSF/ANSI Standard 53: Drinking Water Treatment Units - Health Effects

Overview: Standard 53 addresses point-of-use (POU) and point-of-entry (POE) systems designed to reduce specific health-related contaminants, such as Cryptosporidium, Giardia, lead, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), MTBE (methyl tertiary-butyl ether), that may be present in public or private drinking water.

NSF/ANSI Standard 58: Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Treatment Systems

Overview: This standard was developed for point-of-use (POU) reverse osmosis (RO) treatment systems. These systems typically consist of a pre-filter, RO membrane, and post-filter. Standard 58 includes contaminant reduction claims commonly treated using RO, including fluoride, hexavalent and trivalent chromium, total dissolved solids, nitrates, etc. that may be present in public or private drinking water.

NSF/ANSI Standard 44: Cation Exchange Water Softeners

Overview: This standard covers residential cation exchange water softeners designed to reduce hardness from public or private water supplies. Additionally, this standard can verify the system's ability to reduce radium and barium.

NSF/ANSI Standard 55: Ultraviolet Microbiological Water Treatment Systems

Overview: This standard establishes requirements for point-of-use (POU) and point-of-entry (POE) non-public water supply (non-PWS) ultraviolet systems and includes two optional classifications. Class A systems (40,000 uwsec/cm2) are designed to disinfect and/or remove microorganisms from contaminated water, including bacteria and viruses, to a safe level. Class B systems (16,000 uw-sec/cm2) are designed for supplemental bactericidal treatment of public drinking water or other drinking water, which has been deemed acceptable by a local health agency.

NSF/ANSI Standard 62: Drinking Water Distillation Systems
Overview: Standard 62 covers distillation systems designed to reduce specific contaminants, including total arsenic, chromium, mercury, nitrate/nitrite, and microorganisms from public and private water supplies.

NSF/ANSI Standard 177: Shower Filtration Systems - Aesthetic Effects

Overview: This standard covers point-of-use (POU) shower filtration systems, designed to reduce free available chlorine that may be present in potable water (public or private).

NSF Protocol P231: Microbiological Water Purifiers

Overview: Protocol P231 addresses systems that use chemical, mechanical, and/or physical technologies to filter and treat waters of unknown microbiological quality, but that are presumed to be potable.

CSA B483.1: Drinking Water Treatment Systems

Overview: Canadian Standards Association (CSA) developed additional requirements, outside the existing NSF/ANSI standards, to meet plumbing, mechanical, and electrical requirements for drinking water treatment components and complete systems. Products under this scope include POU and POE plumbed systems and POU non-plumbed systems. The regulation will go into Canadian National Plumbing Code in 2010 but provinces can adopt the standard at any time.

Ozonated Water for CPAC Machines

For those with CPAP machines (continuous positive airway pressure machines are often prescribed for those combating sleep apnea) ozonated water has been described as "life changing". CPAC machines need the lines sanitized. Sanitizing with chlorine or vinegar lives a distinctive odor that is unpleasant for the CPAC user. The ozonated water, on the other hand, leaves only one residual - oxygen - fresh, all natural oxygen straight from Mother Nature. Because ozone is an allotrope of oxygen, because ozone mimics Mother Nature, the nasty odor that accompanies both vinegar and/or chlorine is no longer a part of the nightly ritual.

For the spa industry, the use of ozone for pedicures and the sanitizing of the water lines is a big money saver not just in chemicals but also in staff time but more importantly in providing the very best all natural sanitizer known to mankind.

For restaurants, professional chefs love ozonated water to provide a safe and non-chemical sanitizing rinse for extending the life of the produce and for adding a simple and quick step to combat the all too prevalent food borne illnesses.

Ozonated Water for Halitosis

For myself, I find that plaque buildup on my teeth is helpful with a couple of glasses of ozonated. One glass doesn't do it for me. For many, they like gargling with ozonated water to help with halitosis.

Crazy Claims

Ozonated water has many valid uses. Ozonated water will assist in food safety. Ozonated water does kill bacteria and has been clearly documented. "Cures" have no research foundation. As in all items, be realistic on the uses, be a wise consumer.

How to Shop for Ozonated Water

Whatever your uses, ask some important questions when shopping and actively seek out some very important visual cues.

1st Question - Drinking Water Use?

Only layered ozonated water delivers sanitizing properties and safe drinking water. Home made ozonators may ozonated but not filter. Some ozone units are made simply for sanitizing not for sanitizing and filtering drinking water. For example, in the application for the pedicure, if that is the only use, the filtering of the water for chlorine. Filtering tap water to remove chlorine is considered an "aesthetic purpose" for drinking water not a health item and not a need part of the layered ozonated system IF your intended use is simply for pedicures. IF you are a spa and want to use the water also for drinking water, you will then want the layered ozonated water - carbon filter, carbon block and the sanitizing properties of the ozonated water.

Remember, UV is a sanitizer also but it is light based so whatever is blocking the light will not be sanitized.

Visual Cues & Knowledge Tips

The EPA registration number should be noted for ozonated water units. The number relates to the manufacturer not to the brand.

Ask About the Level of Ozone Delivered

Depending upon your use - sanitizing or disinfecting or filtered water, know the level of ozone that you need and ask the distributor/manufacturer what the level of ozone that is delivered.

Ask About the Sustainability of Ozone Delivered

Be aware that not all ozone generators are created alike. Some have the ability to deliver a high level of ozone over time. Some can only deliver an incidental amount of ozone over a very short time frame. Determine your needs. If you are a restaurant with high volume, you need to be assured the level of the ozone will remain constant. If the smell of the delivery of the ozone is completely gone after running the ozone generator after a couple of minutes, you are now simply running pure oxygenated water. Remember if the ozone water sits for one minute, the ozone dissipates but if you have the initial smell, the sanitizing effects will continue. Be cautious and closely review the water production to ensure the generator continues to deliver ozone over an extended time frame. LED lights and your nose will know. I prefer the mindless LED light myself - maintenance is then assured by the microcomputer chip.

NSF Certification Need for Filtered Drinking Water

If you are seeking an ozone unit for drinking water, you want the water filters used in the layered ozonated water filtration system to be NSF certified for both NSF 43 and 53.

Layered Ozonated Water - New Technology/New Product - Right from Mother Nature

Just as the future was much brighter with the advent of the world wide web, so too, the new technology of layered ozonated water takes drinking water and food sanitation into a new standard of excellence.

I love having VeriPure where ever I go.

Even my apples I prefer to clean that wax off of them and then rinse with VeriPure.

Love the water and try to drink a couple of glasses per day.

I didn't learn this until recently. I am leaning more towards cleaning my apples and then santizing. And fruits which peal are more appealing to me (sorry for the pun, I just had too!).
