PASSION OF LIFE: some sleep while they live, others dream what they live.
Are You Numb to Life?
When we think of passion, we mostly think of sex, romance and love. Our passionate approach to life is critical yet how must we continue to steam that fuels our re-inventive engines.
Without a passionate drive and a passionate heart for simple existence, the love of life, and the ultimate regard for the wonder of all creation, we would fail to live the lives we want.
My grandmother use to say, "almost the whole world is asleep. Only a handful of people are awake, and they live in a state of constant amazement'"
Those words stuck with me and have never left.
Awake people in a state of amazement! Of course. We need more awake people!
Awake people are passionate about living and experiencing life on this planet of wonder--a planet created by an act of God. We need awake people to stimulate us and to draw us out of dreariness. Its too easy to stay asleep and drudge around as if drugged by the every day-ness of it all. Catatonic from boredom, fear, loss, or rejection.
How many truly awake people do you know?
They are easy to spot.
1. They are interesting and sometimes energetic.
2.They are the kind of people you just like to be around.
3.they seem to sense the awesomeness of life.
4. They have tendency to make it contagious.
5. They are hopeful.
6. They are grateful.
7. They are believers.
8.They see life as an adventure.
9.They are filled with wonder.
The difficulty with PASSION:
There are many, many times when it is difficult to be an awake person.
So many daily trials rob us of our passion.
Each new day brings new problems, another difficulty for us to deal with.
We suffer loss(family, friends, possessions, careers); we experience rejection; and we fail over and over again.
All of these difficulties are "numb-ers". They are like drugs or anesthetics. In order not to feel the hurt again, we just simply choose not to feel at all. And we fall asleep, going through each day numb, all passion gone. There are many examples of where visionaries fail here! This place of hopelessness and bitterness, becoming caught up in the negative thinking and pessimistic tendencies. Allowing your mind to enter this level of darkness is life threatening. When one continues to numb themselves they become like wilting flowers eventual withering away into a cycle of unhappiness. At some point, unkown, the straw lands on the camel's back and we just give in. We give up by giving in to our circumstances.
Although life does have many trials, many frustrations, pain, heartache, loss. passionate people accept them as simply normal part of life.
Scott Peck, author of "The Road Less Traveled" wrote, "Life is difficult, once we fully embrace the truth that life is difficult-when we truly understand and accept it, the fact that life is difficult no longer matters."
We must grasps this fact, and THEN we are ready to pursue renewed passion for life.
Being passionate about life sounds easy and simple, yet it is the most difficult issue facing humankind.
There will be times when you just don't feel like it! times when you feel alone and discourages; times when you barely have your head above water, when your up to your neck in quicksand. What do you then?
IS IT POSSIBLE TO CREATE YOUR PASSION? CAN YOU JUST INVENT IT AND THEN DROP IT INTO YOUR SOUL? of course not! and you will never have to! It has already been created for you.The propensity for passion lies within you. All you have to do is draw it out! Isn't that great? wow.
WHAT IS THIS PASSION?
It has originated in the very depths of soul, placed there from the beginning of time by the creator. Passion is a part of what theologians call the IMAGIO DEI, 'THE IMAGE OF GOD' in which you and I were created. You were created in the likeness of a very passionate GOD. Scripture is riddled with evidence of this fact.
EXAMPLE :Genesis, where god completes his creative work of art in six stages and at the end of each stage he completes them by speaking life words "IT IS GOOD"--maybe these three words seem like a weak statement but what else was there to compare anything to, but GOD, right? God is perfect, and for God to make such a statement must have meant he had great PASSION for what was created by him alone.
I use the example of my son's birth to describe what God may have felt when creating the universe and the world. Such perfection and joy. We created a life, a baby boy who was a full reflection of the two of us. God must have felt his same passion after his creation. It is the same passion God has available to us.
One last example just to reassure you that your passion lies somewhere deep. In the same way Jesus chose to suffer on the cross for the good of God's creation. Historically we have called this act "The Passion of Christ"
IT TAKES MANY MISTAKES TO MAKE A GREAT LIFE!
We must pursue our lives with the same intensity of passion. If we CONSCIOUSLY link our passion to God, maybe we would focus more on doing the right things than on doing things right.
Growing up Baptist I have always believed in doing things right. Get good grades, be polite, wash my hands, etc. Never understanding why I just knew to please God and others I had to follow a strict set o f rules. These rules were often followed by the punishment I would receive if I did not obey them. So yes fear was a factor. I did not want to disappoint or upset anyone. My image and the image of the church would be looked upon negatively if i behaved a certain way. Some behaviors I would never attempt being either Christian or Muslim, so rules are of small importance. Fast forward ten years later and I now understand that there is a tendency of religion to misplace there focus. Religiosity emphasizes THE RULES, when it should emphasize THE REASONS behind the rules and go to the core of TRUE RELIGION, where we find giving and loving relationships.
The church for too long has focused on the rules over relationships, and as a result we have become like ill taught guitar students more concerned with making mistakes than making music.
To be concerned over mistakes is one of the quickest ways to destroy personal passion. If you don't think so ask any five-year old to sing a song and just watch them belt it out proudly. Then go ask any adult and watch the response you get. "Oh no I can't sing girl..ununNoway" and then say yes you can.
The process of reinventing yourself can be an incredibly passionate one. Lets forget about the worries of how difficult life is, about the mistakes you made last year. So what?
Instead, let's be the ones who make symphonic music so explosive and loud, so inviting and coaxing that it awakens all the sleepers around us! WOW powerful passion.
