Phobias, Phobias, Phobias......Oh, So Many Phobias...Arachnophobia Etc

My Phobia

While searching the Internet for a name for my irrational fear of cockroaches, I ran across the meaning of Phobia, and the following is what I found.

1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous. 2. A strong fear, dislike, or aversion.

Based on those meanings I have a legitimate phobia, but alas there is not a bonafide, specific name for my "phobia." It appears that I can only call it a fear of insects, "Entomophobia." That's not good enough for me, but I guess It'll have to do. NO, it won't do, I'm going to name it "roachophobia," now, there it is.

So, on my quest I found that there are hundreds of phobias, almost anything that you have an irrational or strong fear, dislike or aversion to, has a name with phobia attached to it. I'm going to name just a few.

Phobias

Now before I proceed, I'd like to point out that some of these are real fears not feigned or imagined, so if I take a little levity, I'm only doing it for the entertainment, not to belittle anyone for their fears.

These happen to be, out of all the ones that I found, legitimate and believable. If I don't happen to name yours, it only means that I didn't find it, or to me, it was unbelievable, or maybe I haven't gotten to it yet.

So here it goes:

They use different medical terms to describe these phobias. A lot of medical terms are latin forms nouns. Noun: Phobia, from Phobos meaning fear. then add the other medical term at the beginning such as Heme term for blood (complex red organic pigment containing iron and other atoms to which oxygen binds) and you have Hemaphobia.

It was really fun to read all of those I had no idea there were so many. One of those things that make you go hmmmm.

Thank you Micky Dee, alekhouse, Tammy, and lorlie6 for taking time to read this hub. I started this because of one of my many phobias, what I dubbed "roachophobia," but along the way I learned a lot.

Thank you Tammy for giving us the explanation of how they came up with the names, see I'm still learning. Thanks for that.

Thank you all for stopping, I'll see you all soon.

Seeing the list, I think everyone has phobia of some kind or other. Only the rating vary may be from 0 to 100. However since a phobia becomes a phobia only after it becomes persistent, it is not recognized as phobia for many.

fastfreta profile image

fastfreta 6 years ago from Southern California Author

You know, free4india, you're right. Because there is not a person that has commented that hasn't listed at least one. Thanks for the insight.

fastfreta, the huntsman spider is very common in our area.

As a matter of fact we had to remove three of them during this week. They come out in the hot weather especially after it has been raining.

Am studying for a psychology degree, so you can imagine how fascinating this must have been for me. I know the names are tough, but when you look at the wide range of phobias, don't you wonder how human beings can literally develop a fear of anything if conditioned into it, esp. as children. Anyway, a very comprehensive list... thank you for sharing it. :)

fastfreta profile image

Thanks myownworld, I agree there is a long list of these maladies. I only listed a limited amount. Thanks for stopping and commenting. See you soon.
