Phobias, Phobias, Phobias...............Oh, So Many Phobias #2

Phobias

This is a continuation of a previous hub, entitled Phobias, Phobias, Phobias........Oh, So Many Phobias. Just to recap the meaning of Phobia is as follows.

1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.2. A strong fear, dislike, or aversion.

Keep in mind as you're reading these, as the meaning states, it's not just a strong fear, but also a strong dislike or aversion, so if some of these seems a bit on the ridiculous side, keep an open mind.

After all is said and done concerning these listed phobias, we can safely say there are many more. Actually almost everyone has an irrational fear, a strong dislike or aversion to something. However when these fears are disabling they're considered phobias.

So if you are suffering from any of the real listed or non listed phobias, all is not lost. You can overcome your phobia with the proper treatment, and self-help strategies. As with most anything now, we can find help via the Internet. So my suggestion, "get to surfing."

I think the fear of phobias takes the cake. Who knew you could fear fear itself? This was another great read fastfreta.

Yeah I like that one too, that's why I highlighted it. Thanks again Veronica.

fastfreta - I've known so many people to have phobias, mostly with bugs - but equal to that is snakes. My son has snakes so therefore a dear friend of mine who wants to bring him a housewarming gift will not - unless maybe it's summer and she can stand out on the sidewalk and toss the gift to him. Sigh! I knew a librarian, so afraid of reptiles she would not walk down that book aisle.

But I wonder how much of this is taught or just foolishness. When my granddaughter (11 years old) and family moved to ATL from NYC her fear of bugs was waaaaay out of hand. I would watch this girl run and scream from a fly - but I saw her 2 baby sisters, who were not afraid, start running too. So before school started I sat her down and told her she had no choice but to stop because:

a - when she starts at this new school and other students find out they will forever throw bugs on her

b - running wildly will have her run out in front of a truck one day - and guess which will hurt more - fly or truck?

c - and most of all she was a big sister and teaching her little sisters fear - so cut it out.

And she did - the next day she was fine - out in the yard knocking bugs away - having a great time.

Well, you know when I read one of your hubs I can go on and on - but what is wrong with a culture that its people should have sooooooo many fears.

Thanks again!

Bk, you're good. I like your strategy, wish I had your knack, you need to teach this. As you noticed in the beginning of my first part of this duo, I stated that I had an unnatural fear of roaches, HELP! LOL! Anyway thanks for weighing in on this. See you soon.

This is very interesting, but who are these people who have fear of Paper? It's harmless.

My phobia is crowds. I don't like it when there are too many people close to me. Fastfreta, it's so bad that if I get on a train and it starts to get very crowded, I get off and wait for the next one. I think I need help.

My fear is number # 7 and 13 I am fearful of being to heavy so I always watch what I eat and I am scared to death of snakes. If you want to see someone scream at the top of their lungs and shatter glass that would be me when a snake is present. lololo Great hub!!! I enjoyed! :)

Oops Lady_E, you have claustrophobia or at least a mild form of it. I gave the phobias, but I didn't give the remedies, sorry. I guess you'll have to check out the trusty ole Internet. See you soon.

WOW, AE, you're loaded with phobias, as I am, I won't begin to tell you all of mine. I thinks I listed all of the ones that you have. Thanks for stopping. See you soon.

I really got a kick out of this one. I have a fear of getting lost and driving in strange places - I wonder if there's a name for that one.

I really relate to this one. I had Acraphobia for years. Gripping, controlling...until I faced it head-on in a challenge on a fire escape in L.A. (see my hub My Reality Show Experience: the Whole Story) Anyway, my fear has lessened a great deal. Glad you shared about phobias.

I feel your fear, I have a fear of heights also. I wrote this because I have several of these, although they're not crippling. Thank you for reading. See you soon.

Great hub, this was fun to read! I found that "omphalophobia" especially interesting--I've had a really weird fear of something getting caught in my belly button all my life lol. I wonder if maybe I have that phobia. Really interesting, thanks!

fastfreta 6 years ago from Southern California Author

Thanks a.l.laurice, you do, you really do have that phobia, WOW. Yes, I found these to be quite interesting myself. Thank you for stopping, please come again.

I sufer with pogonophobia, my friends think it's crazy but I just can't get too close to someone with a beard!

fastfreta profile image

fastfreta 5 years ago from Southern California Author

Say, I didn't realize that one was on here. I'll bet if you questioned your friends extensively, you'd find that they also have some kind of "irrational" fear. Because let's face it most of us do, so don't let them fool you, they have theirs too. Anyway, thank you so much for stopping, please come again.
