10 Tips for home safety against poisoning

Apart from accidental ingestion, skin contact and inhalation of many of these household products are actually life-threatening. As such, here are important tips and reminders:

1. Learn first aid (and hope you don’t have to use it in your home).

2. Keep hazardous materials away from children and pets.

3. Follow the manufacturer’s instruction for storage, use and disposal.

4. Label everything for easy identification.

5. Keep volatile substances in air-tight containers.

6. Use the appropriate type of containers for each poisonous item.

7. Post emergency numbers.

8. Educate everyone in your house regarding poisonous products in your home.

9. Set rules regarding handling household products (and implement them).

10. Lock cabinets and drawers that contain dangerous substances.

Perhaps it’s because we are too familiar with these products that we forget the danger they present. Unfortunately, when we let down our guard, accidents can happen. It is imperative that homeowners know how to poison-proof their homes.

Great and informative hub. This certainly helps as a lot of these can be easily found in homes and there have been cases when accidents happen because the toxic material was put in a different bottle but was not labeled as toxic. Educating our children and everybody at home is definitely a must.Voted up and useful and shared.

Such a good reminder that we must pay attention to things surrounding us. If you have a child is even more important to not neglect these substances and store them safely. As a matter of fact I'll sweep my house for these and seal away anything I'll find. Thanks for sharing, much appreciated.

Schad 4 years ago

My wife is pregnant and some of the items here are dangerous to her. Since she is more sensitive nowadays, I'm careful when spraying insecticides around the house. I need to change my habits especially when the baby comes out.

It is amazing how many toxic chemicals there are. So many new chemical and variations of existing chemicals go to market each year in our household products without ever being tested for safety and toxicity - it's hard for consumers to know what's safe and what isn't! Good article.

If you're a parent like me then you the importance of reading the labels. But then again, companies will confuse you with technical terms. It's always best to look for safety certifications on labels. Likewise, it is a good idea to research these chemicals on the net.

What a list that you've got here! These things if not kept properly, are dangerous when there are little kids around. However, not keeping things in their proper place and not putting labels can be a dangerous thing too. This has happened locally when a caterer cooked spaghetti for a children's party and mistakenly put oxalic acid instead of sugar into the sauce. Hundreds were hospitalized because of it.

It is always prudent to be always careful to avoid accidents, even in the home.
