Acupressure For Migraines And Headache

Source

Not only thousands but hundreds of thousands of people suffer from severe headaches and migraine. It is a painful as well as disheartening to find that many medicine systems do not have a satisfactory cure for these headaches.
Acupressure or Pressure Points Therapy if done correctly and faithfully can help relieve this condition.

Migraine and headaches could be due to a plethora of causes viz improper liver or gall bladder function, abdominal gas, constipation, cervical, high blood pressure, chronic cold and catarrh, earache, toothache, nerve pain, mental stress, head injury or tumor, mental exertion, hot weather, stress on eyes, travelling etc.

My Hub On Acupressure

To know what Acupressure or pressure points therapy is , read my hub Acupressure - Pressure Points Therapy.

Migraine And Headches

Women are more prone to migraine and severe headaches. It also could be due to hormonal disturbances or abnormality in reproductive organs, epilepsy, hysteria, urinary infections. Some women are prone to migraine and headaches before the onset of menses and some during menopause.

Sometimes migraine and headaches follow certain foods or drinks that do not agree with one's body, like alcohol, beer, carbonated drinks, coffee, cottage cheese, banana, plum, meat or even certain medicines. Others may find increase in symptoms by taking oral contraceptives or excess physical exertion.

Those who suffer from migraine and headaches often experience much throbbing of the nerves in the head accompanied by severe pain in half the head or even the entire head. It may be accompanied by darkness before the eyes, anxiety, nausea or vomiting. The person also becomes hypersensitive to noise and does not feel like talking or even doing any work. Many of those with headaches and migraine may remain affected by pain for days at a stretch.

Treatment Of Migraine And Headaches With Acupressure

Within a few days of undergoing acupressure or pressure point therapy, those suffering from migraine and headaches start getting much relief. To cure the disease it is necessary that all pressure points on the hands and feet are subjected to pressure especially those points which are painful when pressed.

In figure 1, you can see pressure points marked from 1 to 7, where the head meets the neck. These have to be pressed gently with the thumb, for a few seconds each. After this press the points on both sides of the spinal column on the neck. These points are numbered from 1 to 12 and on the shoulder from 13 to 15. also shown in figure 1. The pressure can be given with the thumb and fingers again for a few seconds on each point.
Application of pressure on these points will either stop the pain immediately or will reduce it to the bare minimum.

After this apply pressure on the side of the neck as shown in figure 2 but ensure that the pressure is applied on these pressure points from top to bottom and not vice versa. Use your thumb or fingers to apply pressure.

After this apply pressure to the tips of the toes and the big toe of both the feet and the thumbs and finger tips of both the hands as in figure 3. These points are connected with the head and brain.

During an attack of migraine or severe headache, there is heaviness, pain and tension in the head, neck, forehead and eyes. To alleviate this all the fingers, toes, thumbs should either be massaged on all the sides from top to bottom and pressure applied as shown in figures 4 & 5. Also, pressure should be applied on the sides, the top and the undersides of the thumbs and the big toes too, as shown in figure 6, as these areas are related to the neck and applying pressure on the thumbs will relieve the headache soon if the pain is due to any problem of the neck.

Figures 7 & 8 show the channels on the feet and hands respectively. The channels have also to be massaged with the thumb in a forward moving massaging motion, as shown in the above figures, going from outside going inwards towards the wrist or ankle, as the case may be.

The most powerful pressure point is as shown in figure 9. It is located in the web between the thumb and 1st finger where they join. This point should be pressed daily twice or thrice a day for 2 to 5 minutes. Apply pressure as if you are massaging, that is, in a circular fashion. This relieves migraine and headache. Even during an attack, if this point is massaged, relief is quick.

Migraine and headaches are very much related to disturbed conditions of the stomach. A lot of people suffer migraine pain when their stomach is upset. These people apart from the above points, should apply pressure on the pressure points related to the liver, stomach and intestines as shown in figure 10A & 10B. Besides this, they need to apply pressure on the points related to the spleen, in the left foot and left hand, as in figure 11A & 11B, the kidneys as in figures 12A & 12B and the endocrine glands as in figures 13A & 13B.

The pressure points for the sex glands are also to be found just below the ankle as in figure 14.

Apart from these pressure points, related pressure points can be found between the eyebrows,,at the outer ends of the eyebrows and on top of the head as in figure 15.

More pressure points can be found in the area of the eyebrows as in figure 16. The eyebrows can be pinched all along their length by holding it between the thumb and the fingers and gentle pressure can be applied, in an upwards direction, and released for a few seconds each. One can do this oneself or can get it done.
This removes any tension and heaviness of or about the eyes immediately.

If one is suffering from diseases of the ear or teeth, sinus or high blood pressure, then one should apply pressure points on the related pressure points too. Also, rubber bands can be tied on the thumbs, fingers and toes as in figure 17.

A few points of note if rubber bands are used as in figure 17.

  1. Use thick rubber bands.
  2. Place the rubber bands at the 1st joint of the fingers or thumb.
  3. Keep the rubber bands for a period of 1 to 5 minutes but always remove them at any point of time in this time period if you feel uneasy or if the finger turns blue.
  4. After removing the rubber bands massage the spot lightly to restore blood circulation.

Another way to get relief from migraine and headaches is to press ones's tongue with the upper and the lower teeth by keeping it about 1/2 inch of the tongue outside the mouth before applying pressure. This is shown in figure 18.

Some Points Of Note

  • Do not eat any foods that you are allergic to.
  • Eat foods rich in Vitamins D & E.
  • Alcohol, tea and coffee increase migraine and headaches.
  • During an attack of migraine it is better to rest in a dark but airy and quiet room.
  • Having a bath and going for a walk in the open offers relief to some persons.
  • Refrain from taking undue tension.
  • Avoid medicines as much as possible.

Rajan, this is a wonderful hub! I have used reflexology and acupunture points on my patients and it really works. Patients in pain and untouchable due to radiation, surgery and tumors benefited greatly from simple pressure points and massage of the hands and feet. Thanks for writing this, it is a very good simple technique to use. You are a great researcher!! Shared on FB!

While I do not use acupuncture, I do use the pressure points to help relieve pain. Love the information in this hub especially the information on the feet. There is also a notch usually in the center of the eyebrow, slight pressure in a counterclockwise rotation for ten to fifteen seconds at a time can help reduce headache pain and sinuse pressure pain especially around the eyes. Very useful hub.

Rajan - I was suffering from a migraine due to neck problems and almost passed by this hub. So, I read it and rubbed the thumbs as directed. It eased somewhat, but after ten minutes it's trying to make a comeback. Still, any relief is well appreciated! Great job!

So glad that you have shared this. My Momma taught me about accupressure as a young girl. I have migraines and have used this method to help alleviate the pain. I also use it for other pain that I may experience. One reason I like using it is that there are no side effects--no dangerous chemicals being put into my body.

Have a lovely evening. :) ps

I have had an aggressive form of this acupressure done for severe migraine headaches by a doctor for years. He started in my wrist and followed the pain up my arm, across my shoulder, up my neck and either over the top of my head to the corner of my left eye or across my ear and over to the corner of my left eye. Severe buising occurred and sometimes my hair was pulled out as he traveled quite a distance to the corner of the eye. It was worth every bruise and every $ as I would likely not get another migraine for a year. It was not uncommon for me to get them every week before being treated in this fashion. You can imagine my disappointment when my doctor retired and no one else in my community has been taught this very effective procedure. This was truly one of the few preventive measures that actually worked for me for a long period of time. We all know when the moment strikes you just want pain relief but the actual prevention through acupressure is cheaper and more effective. Unfortunately, it doesn't work for everyone like it did me but it's worth a try if you have not done it before.

rajan jolly profile image

rajan jolly 3 years ago from From Mumbai, presently in Jalandhar,INDIA. Author

Kristy, acupressure principally is not supposed to be administered so painfully as you describe. In fact it should be stopped the moment it becomes uncomfortable. So this is a very interesting angle to this therapy, one I've not come across.

Thanks for sharing your experience here.
