Protein- The egg white protein
Egg protein is recognized as one of the highest quality natural protein, with the amino acid pattern almost matching the human requirements for amino acids. Apparently, it is been used by bodybuilders all over the world.
In comparison to other protein products, egg is cheaper but delivers quality protein supply. There are lots of hypes and incorrect ideas on the go about egg protein. I would like to clarify as much as i can.
Amount of protein in an egg:
A large egg provides 6gms of protein, where the egg white contains the major amount[app.4gms] and egg yolk contains approximately 2gms. As egg white contains not fat, it is considered safe in large amount[7-12 at a time] by pro bodybuilders. At the same time, egg yolk contains saturated fatty acids[fats] which may pose a threat to health. Egg yolk also contains high cholesterol levels and fat addition. Still, it is safe to take 2-3yolks a day at different times, which helps to maintain the level of other nutrients like calcium.
The two criteria used to measure protein quality is digestibility and biological value. Interestingly, the digestibility of egg protein is 97%, ie, this shows the amount of protein which can be digested from a total given amount.
Thats not all, the biological value of egg egg protein is 94%, which shows the measure of the rate at which protein in food supports growth.
In short, the quality of egg protein suggests that it can be used for synthesis for muscular development and limits the amount of protein burned as fuel.
