Psychology - Why are we so easily Manipulated - Are you Brainwashed?

Little Boxes

The human mind is a funny thing. We believe that everything we do is our own thoughts. For example, we get married, have children and go to work. Apart from these obvious collective human traits we take for granted, the rest of the time we are individuals.

These things that we do are paramount to our happiness and make sense. And everything we do, like that, we do ourselves because we want too. Most of us go through life never ever thinking any different.

But what happens if something comes along to lift that 'veil' that we wrap ourselves in so cosily, to make ourselves comfortable. If something suddenly makes you see the world clearly for the first time in your life, what would you do, or more importantly, think?

As we grow and reach our teenage years, the thoughts that make us individual tend to get pushed to the back of our minds. At this stage of our lives we tend to be collective. A bit like the Borg in Star Trek. We go to the pub or bar, follow our friends to the nightclub, or just stay at home, and watch the sport on TV. Looking back, we don't remember who's idea it was to do these things, we, just as any group around the world, do these things because that's what other teenagers do.

But when we get older, we presume that most of us will grow out of this collective idea, and start out on our life's journey. A singular person with our own minds.

But How Much of This Is Manipulation?

let's start at the most important day of your lives. Getting married. you meet, fall in love and then decide to take the plunge that will join you together with your partner for life. Or however long you decide that you can both work at the marriage, without actually killing each other! But that's beside the point. So, on the surface you are doing what you want to do. And are happy. But after a few years or even months, something subtle starts to happen. One of you becomes more dominant.

Manipulation is a very quiet, silent alteration of the brain. In other words the way that you think, may not actually be 'you' thinking. For example, you have always gone out with your friends at the weekend. One day your husband decides that actually he would prefer you to stay in that night. You do it willingly because you love him. But what happens the next week? Or the weeks after that? You start to feel uncomfortable and decide that you would be better off staying in because you don't want to cause any hurt feelings. After a while, you come to believe that it was your idea in the first place.

Have you ever seen a man or a woman start acting strangely after being married for a while? it's because jealousy starts to rear it's ugly head. The films you watch, the places you go to, are all decided subconsciously because you want to make sure that your husband or wife does not get into the situation where they may meet someone else, or find them attractive. After a few years their whole lifestyle is based on avoiding these particular points. But if you asked them why they didn't go to that club, or watch that TV show, they would both state that they didn't like it, or it was boring. Subconsciously they were doing the 'avoidance' dance.

Are we being brainwashed?
Are we being brainwashed?

The Brainwashed World.

Now we as people, are becoming someone else. The person that you started out as, is no longer there. But what about the World in general? How much subconscious thinking is actually manipulated by the world as a whole? Take religion for example.

Every country in the World has their own belief system. I will stay with Christianity as this was the religion that I was brought up in. If you take the Bible, as many of you will understand it, we all know what happened to Jesus. But have you ever thought outside of the box? If you go to Church, you are told that Jesus died on the Cross and was resurrected. I am not disputing that. I do believe it. But what about afterwards? We have been so indoctrinated into believing those words that say He then 'Ascended to Heaven' have you actually read for yourselves what it says?

According to the Bible, Jesus was still alive for at least a couple of months afterwards. But for some reason, we, as a collective mind, never seem to take this on board. And more importantly, we never question where he was buried! The Bible states that he ascended to Heaven, but of course that was his Spirit, so where is his burial chamber? Get the point?

As a collective mind, as in the case of religion, we are brainwashed into only 'seeing' those words that are told us, and we avoid the parts which are actually staring us straight in the face. Because we are told something over and over again, we then believe it. I will call it 'Skimming'. Our minds skip over the other parts because we are not told to read them. Or more importantly, not told to question.

We Presume.

We presume. Amazing statement. What does that mean? By presuming, we take on board the fact that others know more than we do. How can that be? They have read the same books as we have, why do they have more authority over the subject than us? They may have titles, Kings, Queens or Popes, but they are still people with the same mind as us.

There are many so called conspiracy theories that are always going around the World. From Aliens to Secret Societies. And for some reason we all get caught up in the excitement and mystery of it all. I have recently read the book The Lost Symbol by Dan Brown. In a nutshell this is about the Masonic Secret Society, and the fact that they have a hidden treasure that the World must not know about. Passed down through the ages, it is so important that even the highest initiate must only be allowed to know it's whereabouts after many years of training. What's that got to do with it, you may ask? When reading the book, one thing occurred to me.

Everything in life is pure Psychology!

Take as an example this story.

I remember reading about a Priest who, after reading Dan Browns The Da Vinci Code, was so upset by the fact that maybe, just maybe he had been mistaken about the what happened at the time of Christ, actually jumped out of a building window and killed himself. How sad. Not only because he had his faith tested, but more importantly, he actually believed that one man, Dan Brown, was telling the truth!

There is one secret in life.

There is only one secret in life. And that is the fact that everything we see around us, everything that people do, say or try and make you believe is all Man Made! From the beginning of time, when Man first became aware of what was around him, he started to tell stories, manipulate the tribes, and later, the people of the World. But it all came from his mind. Everything comes from the brain. Nobody on this planet actually knows anything! I am not talking about anything Historical. Certain things in history are fact. We have proof, archaeological, the written word and many other ways.

These things are set in stone. Or are they? We have books that say one thing. Then another will be found that says something else. It is all guesswork. In the case of Jesus, we can believe it because it has been written down by many people, and this is an eyewitness account. So therefore it is physical proof. But anything else that is said, is just guess work. Therefore,

The whole world has been Psychologically made up by each generation!

Think outside the box, don't allow others to place you in One!

— Nell Rose

CIA Mind Control Techniques - Brainwashing.

Free Yourself

The point that I am trying to make is, why do people become so cliche'd? An example is Dan Browns book again. Why do people spend years keeping something secret? Only this person can see it, blah blah. Why do we make up rituals? Surely if something like a Great Hidden Wonder really is out there, why not say, 'Okay folks, one at a time, come and see this great mystery'?

Why does man feel the need to manipulate, brainwash and make something out of nothing? Fair enough, if the object in question is dangerous, then keep it safe. Don't turn it into a secret society, where men stand on one leg, tie an apron around their waist and chant 'Oi Oi Oi while drinking wine from a skull! Childish!

Nobody can tell you when the world will end. Apart from scientists. And even then they don't know yet. If it can be proven then fine. Otherwise keep your opinion to yourself.

Don't be manipulated by one other person. Or by the collective. Think! Use your mind. Think outside the box.

Where we, as individuals, are concerned it is only when we become ourselves through freedom from others manipulation, can we actually know the real us. When I got divorced, and after all the hardship of it, I suddenly realised that actually I DO like watching this sort of film, and Yes I DO like that particular drinking hole. It was an amazing feeling.

In the same way, open your eyes. There is no one in this world that actually knows the truth about anything! No, I don't mean science, no I don't even mean religion. I am talking about much more subtle and psychological things than that. Always ask questions. And never ever be manipulated again. Think outside the box, you may just surprise yourself.

One last little story about manipulation. Thought you might like it. After sending off a cell phone to a recycling site, where they give you money for your old phones. I realised that the site was a con. Many people had left reviews saying that they had never received their money. After two weeks of hearing nothing, I got in contact with them. First they said it was already sent out, then they said it hadn't. It still never arrived.

After another few days, I got in touch with them again. I told them I worked for Google. I said that I was in the department that dealt with scams. I also mentioned the word panda. The girls voice changed to one of sheer panic. The next day I received my cheque, along with an extremely grovelling letter. I used pure manipulation.

Your so right about couples starting to sub-con.think alike."But have you ever thought out-side the box" should be inscribed on a granite block and placed in every town square with a pop.over 5,000. The apron tie-ers its been said do a lot more than drink wine out of Geronimos skull. Hey guys, put some windows in your buildings. Ha! It seems that many are brainwashed because of their need to fit in and be liked. You are so right about thinking outside the box. All of the most creative people do.

Nell, a very touchy subject, well written indeed!

I also believe that most of what we do and think is a matter of what society has brainwashed us to believe is right. Like marriage, we get married legally because society would have us believe that we are doing something wrong if we just happen to live together and have kids out of wedlock.

Who's idea is it that if we don't get a college education e are dumb and won't make it in life?

Society and religion are to be blamed for most of our thought processes and actions.

Hi, Feline, yes you are right, and most people don't even realise that they are being manipulated. It is such a subtle thing. I sometimes sit and listen to people when they are talking around me, and I want to scream, listen to yourself! lol thanks again nell

Hi, Enlydia, ha ha are you having a good drink? give me one, I need it! cheers nell

Hi, Christopher, lol that's okay, I got a bit deep! it started because my friend has decided, in her wisdom, to go out with a man that is, well lets just say not very nice, then I read Dan Brown and thought how stupid the powers that be act! thanks again nell

Hi, Alastar, lol yes I want to shout it from the treetops! what is it with so called secret society's? men and sometimes women playing dress up! thanks again nell

From the moment we are born we are brainwashed/conditioned by our parents, siblings, relatives, friends, teachers in fact by all we come into contact with.

It takes a huge effort to question every belief and most people don't want to do that.

In the end it is all an illusion ... even science is only what has been proven to date ... tomorrow may bring new and more advanced data and the day after that even different knowledge. As for religion ... stories retold for the benefit of those in power. Not that I don't have a faith but I don't take those stories at face value.

Thanks Nell for the interesting read once again. Voted up.

Nicely done Hub. I think people who have had the benefit of parents who knew how to make them feel good and secure, and who encouraged them to think for themselves, are less prone to becoming manipulated (or sheep). The trouble may be, though, that people who think for themselves often learn to stay quiet about not agreeing with "the latest thing", or with someone else, because - oh, brother - there group thinking (and maybe the insecurities at the root of those prone to it) can make a quietish person a little too intimidated to speak up. :/ Even if what I've just said it is true, though, there's no doubt about it (I don't think) that more people follow than think for themselves. Sometimes even just appearing to follow (by not speaking up) can, in its way, be a way of following too. :/

Another great hub Nell. I like what you say about the brain being where it all takes place. It is so weird to realise that we spend our lives creating the external world we perceive in a tiny space at the back of our brains.

I also agree with you in that some of us are too willing to hand our power of choice over to others we view as more authoritative or better than us in some way.

The only problem is that we can never be sure that we are actually thinking outside the box because we are born in a box and end our days in one!

Thank you.

Hi Nell it's midnight here in Melbourne and i've just read through your hub. Believing something that was supposedly spoken two thousand years ago, does take a bit of believing, especially when the earth is estimated to have been around for four and a half billion years. I'll believe it when i see it is my motto, like ghosts, ufos and pixies at the bottom of the garden. I'm too tired to add anymore and i'm off to Noddy land which is real because Enid Blighton said it was. Goodnight.

Nell, I really love this . Thinking outside the box is healthy. I can remember when i was younger, i just went along with the croud, in my daily activities, religion, et. I found that an open-mind was the key to learning and breaking away from embedded teachings that were wrong for me. I don't worry about tomorrow. I try to live for today. I believe God takes care of the world, in His own time, and there is nothing we can do to change that, so be happy, love God and your fellow man, and you will be contented. Thank you for a GREAT hub. You always make us think.

Hi, attemptedhumour, another hour and you will be awake! seems weird to me as its only nine at night! ha ha I am sorry to pop the bubble of Enid Blyton, but she was horrible! I saw a docu on her, mad as a bag of spanners! and bad to her child! sorry about that! lol thanks again nell

Nell, I am completely in agreement with you. Especially in marriage people’s natural tendency to adapt can be clearly analysed. Both parties change. Naturally one of them will become dominant. The more dominant one become, the more subordinate the other one become. I believe finding and maintaining balance is a natural, uncontrollable urge of all living beings. After separation we lose our balance until we find another person, or group of people, with whom we start the whole ‘getting-balanced-process’ again. So often, once balanced, and even in process, we realize that we are not comfortable. It takes a lot of effort to free ourselves – How could we without losing our balance and pushing the other one/lot also off balance? Some people are clever, or perhaps only lucky – by the time they free themselves from one bad balancing partner/group, they are already in the process of balancing with another partner/group. I feel quite comfortable in balance with you and the HubPages community. Take care.

Hi, Martie, so true, I had a friend who always had to have a man, doesn't matter what he was like, she just couldn't function on her own, and sadly she seemed to adapt to his personality, I believe as we get older we seem to unravel the world better, or at least a bit of its understanding, pity we couldn't do it when we were younger! thanks again nell

This is one of your best Nell. Such wisdom! Cheers!

This hub really makes me think! I think religion is a nice concept but there seems to be a reoccurring problem. When men have power over other men they become corrupt. The true brainwashing comes from man and not a higher power.

Nell Rose profile image

I think we must all be brainwashed these days or how could we be in such a horrific mess worldwide? I'm wondering why things don't change or why people don't 'wake up and smell the coffe' but I've often thought it's because we are all brainwashed - or perhaps brain dead? Perhaps it is conditioning and learning to be optimistic in the face of abject stupidity or things that don't make sense - it'll just go away - and then again, I think many folks actually want to see the world "fail" because it goes along with their beliefs. But is it real? Good points, Nell!

awesome hub! This reminded me of a friend who was a "repo-man" who would manipulate peoples preconceived notions of what a man of "stature" embodied. He'd dress the perfect image of what people visually believed to be was a "multi millionaire". As I'd walk around with him, I was amazed to see people greet him, open doors for him, literally run to assist him in any way! Often we want so badly to believe what we hear that we dismiss the real truth. Or it's just easier to believe it than fighting it. You're right about some relationships that thrive on manipulation. And we're usually not the first ones to discover that we've fallen victim to it.

Years ago, a friend made an observation that helped snap me back to reality. She asked where I'd gone? She said there was so little left of me she hardly recognized me. It changed my life for the better.

I love this hub. I like the whole "balancing act" that several people mentioned. The beginning of my marriage I think we did struggle to find who could dominate what part of our lives. We never stopped the other from hanging out with friends or family but important decisions like running the household were not easy to determine.

Both my husband and I were blessed with parents who encouraged thinking for yourself, so it could have been a disaster but we also learned how to get along and fight for only what is important to us.

One example: I rearranged the furniture out of boredom one time and he came home and was thrown off because things were not where he needed them to be. His job, at the time, moving pianos was stressful as the company would throw him off course all of the time by sending him to two places that were hours apart but scheduling the deliveries fifteen minutes apart. So when he came home he needed some normalcy.

I have never really been one to follow along and as a result I was lonely, so I think there is something to the sheep thing to help you figure out who you are, if you don't already have a clue.

Great hub! Keep 'em coming!

Darlene

Nell Rose profile image

Having read this and now with the horrible news from Norway with those shootings, your hub seems to have even more significance. Our entire world is indeed vulnerable! I think the whole world is still in shock over what happened. The words "brainwashed and manipulated" made us step back to examine our comfort zone in lieu of those killings, of life and death. It seemed a safe haven, and it was, but the reality of this world, of the potential of devastation should have us live lives of mindfulness. The context of your hub is wonderful and a poignant reminder that we should be more aware of the great potential we can strive for, while simultaneously recognizing it's frailty in other's mindfulness to destroy. Great hub.

It's easy to stop looking for answers when you have been told the same things all of your life. We are told how we should behave, what to buy, what to believe. I think even ads can brainwash us, they can become a religion to us, like feeling you have to keep up with the Jones's, but to a certain extent manipulation may be necessary to keep order. It can be a good thing, to help us differentiate from right and wrong.

Thought provoking!

Good point about manipulation being necessary sometimes, and yes we would get out of control if we didn't have some sort of cohesion, thanks again for reading, and yes I can see your reading loads today, thank you, be over in a min! lol!

This is really interesting and insightful hub!

I agree most of us do get manipulated. But I think as we grow up and mature, its not easy for someone to manipulate or brainwash people.

There are certain beliefs and conventions however, that are difficult to ignore.

Interesting hub and I enjoyed reading it. Voted up!

Hi Chitrangada, great to see you! yes I totally agree with what you say, some people realise that they are being manipulated, but others just go with the flow due to lack of intellect or understanding, thanks so much, nell

This Hub will never go out of date or become untimely! You wrote a very thought-provoking and interesting article.

I'm much too "bull-headed" to be led by someone else's thoughts or actions. I just do my own thing, but it took years of living before I got this way!

Voted UP, etc

Actually, the whole world is For Sale. Financial independence and discipline is a proven method of avoiding "mind" manipulation and we are the pawns in the Whole World!

Don't you think islam found the biggest brainwashing technique in the world ?

Nell Rose profile image

Hi ram, maybe, but also other religions can be very radical too, and even people who don't have a faith can be brainwashed in other ways, thanks for reading, nell

I think this article was a waste of time, it says what everybody knows and don't analyse anything.

mimi, maybe I should have written about rudeness, you would be the expert on that, wouldn't you? and by the way? did I ask you to read it?!
