Braces ~ Oral surgery
My niece has been going through a series of mouth surgeries and corrections. She has also had to wear braces for a number of years now. Thankfully she is nearing the end of this painful process. She asked for recipes for food as she was getting tired of eating the same things all the time. I decided that I would like to share some of the recipes I gave her with everyone.
A few years of discomfort and pain is definitely worth it in the end. A stunning smile for the remainder of one’s life is in my humble opinion definitely worth a few years of wearing braces. On the other hand I do have to admit that I have never had to go through this process myself as I was blessed with great teeth.
One of the main problems for anyone who has just had mouth operations or braces either put on or tightened is that there is a period of pain and discomfort before things settle down. During this time it is difficult to eat anything and most "normal" food is decidedly impossible to manage. If someone in your family has got or has had braces they will attest to this. This basically means people with braces find some foods harder to eat as some foods get stuck in their braces; literally.
These recipes will help anyone with braces to be able to enjoy a wider range of meals.

Recipes for the few days after oral surgery or tightening of braces
You will need to eat very soft foods at this time that aren't going to get caught in your new or tightened braces or hurt you if you have recently had oral surgery. Having braces should not mean that you have to live off one or two types of foods for the next few years. You may need to cook these then allow them to cool before enjoying them. You may also need to bring cold foods to room temp before eating them so please check with your orthodontist what foods you can eat and whether you can eat hot or cold foods.
Soups ~ This is a great option especially cream of chicken, mushroom or cream of pumpkin. You can buy cans of condensed cream of soups or you can blend your pre-cooked pumpkin then put it through a sieve and add some cream and spices to make your own cream of pumpkin soup.
Mashed Potatoes or Kumara (sweet potato) ~ This dish can be nice and filling. You need to mash and then whip it nice and smooth so that it doesn't require chewing. Don't be afraid to add some seasonings, garlic, gravy, spices or perhaps some taco seasoning, finely diced fresh tomatoes with skins removed, ½ cup sour cream or ½ cup grated cheddar cheese so it doesn't get boring.
Eggs ~ Scrambled ~ This is the types of food that if scrambled well you can almost just swallow. Mix 2-3 eggs with a dash of milk and a pinch of salt and pepper and cook in a heated pan.
Banana Cream ~ 1 cup of whole milk, 2 fresh bananas and one scoop of ice-cream or plain yogurt. Pour half of the milk; add the bananas. Mix well. Add remaining milk and ice cream or yogurt to the blender and liquefy until all is creamy. Other flavour combinations may include: chocolate syrup and flavouring such as coconut, butternut, etc.
Custard ~ If you’re having some pain I would suggest having the custard cold instead of hot as the coldness of the dessert can numb some of the pain for you. You can easily flavour this with a little chocolate sauce, bananas, applesauce etc.
Apple sauce ~ You can buy cans of this or blend cooked apples to make your own. Apple sauce is thin enough to be easily swallowed.
More soft food recipes
Once your mouth has settled back down you will be able to eat more "normal" and balanced meals. They will still need to be soft foods; however your choices will now be a lot more diversified.
The next set of recipes is for when you can finally start chewing again without the added pain that goes with the tightening process. Don't forget that you can alter or add to these recipes to change the flavours of them which makes them seem to be different recipes altogether.
Spaghetti ~ 1 pack of spaghetti and 1 can of pasta sauce. Cook your spaghetti. Drain the spaghetti, throw it back into the pot and cover it with sauce. Heat till the sauce is hot. This will slightly overcook the spaghetti making it softer.
Pumpkin Pie ~ 3 eggs, ½ cup of dark brown sugar, ½ cup of white sugar, 1 tablespoon of flour, ½ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of cumin powder, 3 teaspoons of cinnamon, 1 ½ cups of mashed pumpkin, 1 ½ c ups of heated evaporated milk, and 1 pre formed pie base or you could use muffin tins and put your pastry bases into them making 12 muffin sized pies.
Mix together your flour, eggs, sugar, salt, cumin powder, cinnamon, mashed pumpkin and evaporated milk in a bowl. Spoon the mix into the pie shell. Bake in oven at 180c for 50 to 60 minutes. These are recipes the whole family can enjoy or you can freeze some pies after cooking for another day.
Baked Fish Fillets ~ Salt, pepper, lemon juice, filleted fish, and butter. Place fish on tinfoil (enough to wrap the fish in). Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Dot the top of the fish with the butter. Close the foil wraps and Bake at 220c until the fish flakes with a fork.
Chili Con Carne ~ 500g beef mince, 1 onion finely diced, 1 can of red kidney beans, 2 cups of stewed tomatoes, 1 tablespoon of chili powder, salt, and paprika.
Brown the onion then the mince. Add everything else. Simmer for one hour, stirring occasionally.
Don’t forget you can mix this recipe up by changing the ingredients you use. You may want to use peeled tomatoes and a pasta sauce or make it a Massaman Curry with a can of coconut milk and some massaman paste.
Vegetables ~ prepared by steaming, grilling or frying can be nice and soft. Try steamed broccoli or zucchini. Enjoy grilled Kebabs of mushrooms, peppers and tomatoes. Make a Stir-Fry with onions, eggplant and bok choy. Just remember to slightly overcook your vegetables so that they are soft and don’t get caught in your braces.
Meat loaf ~ One cup of bread crumbs, one cup of tomato sauce or 1 can of pasta sauce, 500g mince, one egg well beaten, ¼ cup of tomato sauce, one tablespoon of Worcestershire Sauce, 3 grated carrots (optional) one package of dry onion soup mix, ½ teaspoon pepper.
Place bread crumbs in mixing bowl, pour pasta sauce over the crumbs and leave the mixture until the breadcrumbs have softened. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Shape into a loaf in a casserole dish and bake for one hour at 180c.
If this doesn’t take your fancy you could make Enchiladas with the beef, add an onion, garlic, cheese, 1 can of cream of chicken soup, 1 can of tomatoes and some tortillas. Put into a casserole dish and cook for an hour at 180c.
Santa Fe Chicken Chowder ~ 2 Tbsp. butter, 1 med onion finely chopped, 2 cloves garlic minced, 1 cup chicken soup, 1 tsp. ground cumin, ½ tsp. cayenne pepper, ½ tsp. coriander, ½ tsp. salt, 2 cups very finely chopped chicken breast, 1 can creamed sweet corn, 1 can or 3-4 diced tomatoes and green chilies, 1½ cup finely grated sharp cheddar cheese.
Melt the butter and brown the onion and garlic. Add the chicken soup, cumin, cayenne, coriander, salt and chicken. Stir, and over high heat, bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 10-15 minutes. Add the corn, tomatoes, and green chilies. Stir and increase the heat to medium. Gradually stir in the cheese until melted.
You can happily eat moist Carrot or Banana cake with cream cheese frosting.
Make some pancakes or pikelets. Add a small amount of sauce or some soft fruit and cream.
You don't have to live off soups, omelettes, smoothies and custard. There are many different types of food you can create and enjoy.
You can go from Italy to Japan or from Mexico to India just by altering what herbs and spices you add to your meals.
