Reiki Hands on Healing Prayer
Reiki is considered by some to be a form of alternative healing.
Some consider it to be a form of Hands on Healing Prayer.
There has been a Reiki Share/Circle celebrating Hands on Healing Prayer held at the Congregational United Church of Christ every Friday night for over ten years.
Usui Shiki Ryoho is a Natural System of Hands on Healing. The system is called Reiki.
Reiki is the flow of Universal Life Energy. Almost every culture and faith has a name for this flow.
Ch'i in China, Prana in India, Ruach in Hebrew, Barraka in islamic countires, Mana in Polynesia, Orenda by Native American/ Iroquois people, and Ki in Japan. It is from this word from Japan that Reiki is named.
Some might even see that the Holy Spirit is connected to this concept that there is a force that holds all together.
When people can let go of ego and express the intention for this universal life energy to flow, Reiki flows through with unconditional love. Such outpouring of "the flow" with ego-less and unconditional love promotes inner healing.
We become, if you will the hollow reed through which Reiki flows.
It is said that we do not master Reiki, Reiki masters us.
The unconditional love, the outpouring of universal life energy enlightens us. It enriches us. It blesses us. Reiki allows us to be in intimate connection to this flow and freely share it with others. Reiki generates a peacefulness that is transforming in many lives and loves.
Thanks to my friend, and Reiki Master Raymond Kaya for his words and insights about this Reiki Kanji.
The literal translation of this Kanji is 'energy of the spirit".
The common interpretation is "universal life energy".
The Japanese pronunciation resembles "lay-key" in English, but with the tongue briefly touching the palate just back of the teeth when pronouncing the "l"
The "anglicized" pronunciation in "Ray-Key".
So: What is Reiki?
So, what is Reiki?
Reiki is not massage: Reiki can be done without touching if this is the desire of all concerned. Reiki can be done from afar. People need not be present in the room if this is the desire of all concerned,
Jesus could heal from afar. Reiki has the same possibilities if sent to others from a distance.
Reiki is not massage and is always done fully clothed.
Reiki is not religion: Reiki does not create discord or disharmony within any religion from within itself. Some religions who do not understand Reiki in its simplicity generate such discord towards Reiki.
Reiki is not religion.
Reiki is not philosophy: Reiki is a system of natural healing that requires no belief. Perhaps an open mind, but not a system of belief.
Reiki is not a system of beliefs. Reiki can be blended with other systems and modalities of healing.
Just for today do not anger.
Just for today do not worry.
Respect your elders, parents and teachers.
Earn your living honestly.
Respect all living things.
Reiki is respectful. Reiki is always done with permission. Reiki is done for the greatest good of all concerned.
Reiki is a natural system of hands on healing (prayer).
Reiki flows through us, a gift from the Divine. Reiki flows through us, a gift from the universe.
Reiki involves allowing the flow of KI, the energy that flows through all things to promote inner healing in the one receiving a Reiki treatment.
When giving Reiki, one is receiving Reiki at the same time.
Reiki constantly flows.
Chakras and Reiki
Knowing about "chakras" the body's energetic centers (according to many Eastern energy/medical/ spiritual/modalities can help explain how to give a Reiki treatment and how Reiki "works".
Reiki enters our bodies through what is known as the crown chakra. ( Where the purplish colored light is on the top of the head of the figure.)
It then flows through our hands and enters the body/energy field of the one receiving a Reiki Treatment.
Reiki flows on in abundant love through the "hollow reed" that the practitioner strives to be. This flow of universal, life force energy is shared with the one receiving. Also, anyone in the room will benefit from being surrounded by the flow.
During a basic Reiki treatment, hands are placed over or near each of the seven major chakras.
Chakra is a Sanskrit word meaning wheel. Chakras are powerful energy centers in the body that are tied into the endocrine (glands) in the human body. Animals also have chakras and Reiki can be used on animals too!
There are seven major chakras.
Root Chakra (associated with the red light in the figure and with the energy of the color Red) is connected with the reproduction glands, basic body and money needs, safety and sexuality behaviors, grounded-ness and physical space boundaries.
Ovaries: Female which produce the hormones estrogen and progesterone, produce eggs in the ovaries and influence female characteristics.
Testes: Male glands which secrete testosterone, which stimulate sperm production and development of male characteristics.
Sacral Chakra associated with Orange light and its energy. It is connected to the adrenal gland. Connected to feelings, emotional needs plus boundaries and trust, warmth, intimacy, attachment/ letting go, addictions, pleasure vs. needs beginnings and ends.
Adrenal Glands are two small glands that sit on top of each kidney. They release hydrocortisone, which effects metabolism. They also produce androgens such as DHEA and aldosterone, which maintains blood pressure and the body's salt and potassium balance.
Solar Plexus Chakra
Solar Plexus Chakra is associated with Yellow light and its energy. It is connected to the Pancreas. It is associated with Mental Energy, Balancing will/power/ control over self vs.others, beliefs with others' feelings, details with efficiency, Constructive vs. self-critical thoughts. Perfectionism.
Pancreas: The abdominal organ which secrets insulin and glucagon which control the utilization of sugar, the body's chief source of energy,
Heart Chakra is associated with Green light and its Energy. It is connected to the Thymus. It is associated with Harmony Trust, "loving-ness", being gentle with others, Able to give and receive without giving. Flexibility, openness to new ideas and thoughts, Coping with loss, balance.
The Thymus is a small gland under the breast bone. The thymus helps produce white blood cells. It i usually most active in teenagers and shrinks in adulthood. Much to do with the immune system.
Throat Chakra is connected to Blue (turquoise) Light and its energy. It is associated with the thyroid gland. Open and clear communication of feelings and thoughts. Creativity, speaking up, releasing, breathing, life-force, healing.
Thyroid gland produces the hormones thyroxin, triiodothyronine, and calcitonin which stimulate metabolism, body heat production and bone growth.
Brow Chakra is associated with Indigo (blue-purple) Light and its energy. It is connected to the pituitary gland. It is connected to "seeing" overview, visualizing, clairvoyance, choices for good of all. Psychic, fine-tuned awareness of self and others, healing addiction and service.
The pituitary gland is the mater gland, It signals other glands to put forth hormones. The pituitary gland also secretes growth hormone and anti diuretic hormone, prolactin and oxytocin, a hormone which causes contraction of the uterus during labor.
Crown Chakra is associated with both white and violet light. It is connected to the Pineal Gland. Compassion, at-one-ness; Seeing self in others. Peaceful non-attached, and loving. non-reacting spiritual love.
The pineal gland is located at the base of the brain and is cone-shaped. It secretes the hormone melatonin.which may help to synchronize biorhythms and the passage of time.
Reiki and symbols
Part of Reiki is a set of symbols that are used to help focus intention and attention and to draw the energy during treatment sessions. There is controversy about symbols and how effective they may or may not be.
I find they have an intrinsic value and carry meaning and power.
The symbols are considered by many to be sacred. There is also controversy about when, where, and how the symbols should be shared. Some believe that since they are so sacred, that they should only b taught during classes during specific levels of Reiki training and attunement or initiation. I believe that they are sacred and any individual needs to be ready to receive the symbols. In some schools the symbols are taught and memorized. No copies of the drawing of the symbols are allowed to leave that training. This may account for some of the variations in how symbols are drawn.
I was taught that the love which Reiki has the potential to bring into the world is also sacred. They symbols may well be able to promote world and universal peace, harmony, and universal love.
It is in the spirit of this belief, that Reiki is the pathway to love, that I share three basic Reiki symbols.
Cho Ku Rei: The Light Switch--bring the energy here, Cho Ku Rei is used to increase the flow of Ki at the beginning of a treatment session. It is part of Reiki Level II Training.
Sei He Ki: Emotional, Spiritual, clearing and Healing:
Can be used to enhance all levels of treatment and healing. Powerful to clear throat and heart, chakra blocks.
Hon Sha Ze Sho Nen is the distance healing symbol, Time and space collapse when using this symbol. Can be used to heal past traumatic incidences, Many believe this symbol can be sued to resolve past life issues,
There are additional symbols that are taught during level III of Reiki training, I chose not to share those Master Levle symbols. They are useful for those who wish to teach Reiki and pass on Reiki attunements and initiations.
Reiki has been a blessing in my life. My other Reiki Hubpages explain about my Reiki journeys.
Infinite Reiki Blessing to all of you who may visit.
