Safeway Signature Cafe Sandwiches Nutritional and Caloric Information

Safeway Signature Cafe Sandwich Nutritional Information

I obtained the following information for Safeway Signature Cafe's nutritional information for their deli sandwiches, where I sometimes have a lunch. It wasn't easy to get a hold of so I am hoping that this information will be helpful to those who are watching their caloric and nutritional intake. This information is current as of February 2012.

While some of the values you list seem reasonable, I question the accuracy of some of your grid. For example, a regular sized pastrami at Safeway has 990 calories and weighs nearly a pound? I just don't think that Safeway puts THAT much meat on their regular sized sandwiches, and given that a hot pastrami sandwich normally has only mustard, no mayo, as a condiment, I just don't see how two slices of bread, probably 2-3 ounces of pastrami, and an ounce of cheese could add up to nearly 1,000 calories. Even if you got someone at the counter who put on extra cheese and meat, I still don't think you'd get a sandwich large enough to come close to what you list. I should also note that a couple of other websites list the calories in a Safeway Pastrami and Swiss sandwich as being 580 with the exact same protein count you list, so something is clearly off.

Looking more closely at all of your values, I'd say that the fat grams you list is wildly inaccurate. A half pound of pastrami has about 13 grams of fat and 3 ounces of Swiss cheese has about 23 grams, for a total of 36 grams given that the bread and condiments will have very little fat. And that sandwich would be HUGE. Yet you list this sandwich as having over 66 grams of fat.

Where did you gather the data you're presenting here? Was it provided by Safeway?

I received the data exactly from a store manager at Safeway. The content have not been modified by me.

Keith 3 years ago

Where are the values for protein? All of these sandwiches have some, actually quite a lot of protein, yet the caloric values add up and list no protein. Seems impossible.

Brian 3 years ago

grilled chicken is the same as a phili cheese.. Something seems way off here. What would be helpful is a list of each ingredients they use and calories associated.

Agrees, but I don't think it is available. This is the exact information I received from Safeway with no changes.

Brian 3 years ago

Yeah Ishen I know if I would trust that source just for the fact I could go to subway and get a footlong chicken sandwich with cheese for less than that value. http://recipes.sparkpeople.com/recipe-calories.asp... gives the same sandwich itemized for 300 calories less.

jeffmem 3 years ago

Despite these coming from a Safeway store manager, it's obvious that at least some of them are incorrect. As I mentioned earlier, some of the math just doesn't add up. It really is a shame that Safeway doesn't have at least a rough guideline of calories posted on their sandwich menus. I guess they are exempted from the laws requiring that where I live. Too bad, because knowing what you're going to be consuming is helpful for those of us either trying to lose weight or concerned about maintaining a certain weight. At least they should provide a range of calories for each sandwich since one's person sandwich will obviously not be exactly the same as someone else's since the sandwiches are custom made.

Don't get me wrong -- I do appreciate that you posted this list and I do think that some of it is accurate (or at least close to accurate).

By the way, Keith, if you look at the entire list (scroll right), you will see a column for protein values.

Jeffmem I totally agree with you. I was trying to figure out why I wasn't losing weight and the particular sandwich I was eating had one value on MyFitnessPal but had a higher value according to the info from the store manager. So I stopped eating the sandwich and then the weight came off. I wish Safeway just publishes this information like the chain restaurants but groceries are exempt from the rules about posting nutritional information. I got what I could but maybe the information has been corrected since?

Amy 2 years ago

I work in a Safeway deli and I'm not sure how many calories are in the bread we use (I checked the boxes and they list no nutritional value). However, for example on a Turkey and Havarti Panini we use 60 grams of Primo Taglio Havarti cheese and 90 grams of Primo Taglio Oven Roasted Turkey with Garlic Sauce (which is pretty high in calories). That's 240 calories from cheese, 90 calories from meat, I'd say tops 75 calories from the sauce, and then you'd add the panini bread. So 500 calories is probably pretty close.

Regular sandwiches typically have 30 grams cheese and 45-90 grams of meat. Paninis have 60 grams of cheese and 90 grams of meat.

This needs to be sent to Safeway (mgmt)

Thank you for posting this! Very helpful.

Thank you for doing this. I guesstimated 800 for my Tuscan Turkey. Unfortunately 1000 seems correct with the cheese roll, cheese, mayo, and all the rest, including the pesto sauce and olives. Painful. But good to know.
