Should Cigarettes be made illegal?

Cigarettes are highly addictive, so why are they legal?

Did you know that approximately 5.5 trillion cigarettes are produced globally each year and are smoked by over 1.1 billion people or greater than one-sixth of the world population?

So why do they do it?

The physiology reason...

The inhaled substances trigger chemical reactions in nerve endings. The cholinergic receptors are often triggered by the naturally occurring substance acetylcholine. Acetylcholine and Nicotine express chemical similarities, which allows Nicotine to tigger the receptor as well. These nicotinc acetylcholine receptors takes part in two major types of neurotransmission, synaptic transmisson and paracrine signalling. This activity increases heart rate, memory, alertness, and produces a measurably faster reaction time after individuals have smoked. Dopamine and later endorphins are released, which are associated with sensations of pleasure and reward.

When tobacco is smoked, most of the nicotine is pyrolyzed. However, a dose sufficient to cause mild somatic dependency and mild to strong psychological dependency remains. There is also a formation of harmane (a MAO inhibitor) from the acetaldehyde in tobacco smoke. This seems to play an important role in nicotine addiction—probably by facilitating a dopamine release in the nucleus accumbens as a response to nicotine stimuli.

The Psychological reason...

The majority of cigarette smokers start when they are young. Often because of the stigma of smoking cigarettes is cool and has the elements of risk-taking and rebellion. Most often teenagers are influenced more by their peers than by adults; this means that the attempts to educate the hazards of cigarette smoking from health professionals, parents and teachers etc often become unsuccessful. There also has been research to show that the majority of smokers are sociable, impulsive, risk taking, and excitement-seeking individuals.

The actual habit is a function of operant conditioning. This means that smoking can provide pleasurable sensations (because of its action on the dopamine system). This serves as a source of positive reinforcement. When trying to kick the habit the withdrawal symptoms (irritability, jitteriness, dry mouth, rapid heart beat, insomnia, mild depression and incapacity to concentrate) become negative reinforcement, which makes giving up cigarettes very difficult.

Often smokers tend to rationalize why they smoke. Smokers tend to think that the benefits of smoking (E.g. reducing stress) out way the negative effects smoking have on the body. There also has been research to show that cigarette addiction is very much like heroin addiction. But I’ll get into that a bit later.

So how unhealthy are cigarettes?

You only have to look at the ingredients of cigarettes to see how they can be bad for your health.

Cigarettes mainly consist of a tobacco blend, paper, PVA glue to bond the outer layer of paper together, and often also a cellulose acetate–based filter.

Cigarettes can contain over 100 ingredients. Many of the ingredients are flavorings for the tobacco. A key ingredient that makes cigarettes more addictive is the inclusion of reconstituted tobacco, which has additives to make nicotine more volatile as the cigarette burns.

Here is an example of what is in cigarettes:

Here’s a small list of ingredients that any smoker should be concerned about:

So let’s talk about diseases and health issues with cigarette smoking

Smoking is a slow killer often wearing people down over time. But smoking has also claimed young lives as well.

Cigarette smoke tends to leave toxic deposits in our lungs and other organs, impairing function and poisoning our health. Generally smokers are more likely to be absent from work than non-smokers, and their illnesses last longer. Smokers tend to incur more medical costs, to see physicians more often in the outpatient setting, and to be admitted to the hospital more often and for longer periods than non-smokers. Also smokers have a lower survival rate after surgery compared to that of non-smokers because of damage to the body's host defences, delaying wound healing, and reduced immune response. Smokers are at greater risk for complications following surgery, including wound infections, postoperative pneumonia, and other respiratory complications.

Periodontitis is a serious gum disease that can result in the loss of teeth and bone loss. Smoking is causally related to periodontitis. This may be because smoking affects the body's ability to fight infection and repair tissue.

Peptic ulcers, which are located in the digestive tract (stomach and duodenum), usually occur in people with an infection caused by the Helicobacter pylori bacterium. Among persons with this infection, smokers are more likely to develop peptic ulcers than non-smokers. In severe cases, peptic ulcers can lead to death.

Although only a small number of studies have looked at the relationship between smoking and erectile dysfunction, their findings suggest that smoking may be associated with an increased risk for this condition. More studies are needed, however, before researchers can conclude that smoking is causally related to erectile dysfunction.

Cancer: The primary risks of tobacco usage include many forms of cancer, particularly lung cancer, cancer of the kidney, cancer of the larynx and head and neck, breast cancer, bladder, esophagus, pancreas, and stomach. There is some evidence suggesting an increased risk of myeloid leukemia, squamous cell sinonasal cancer, liver cancer, cervical cancer, colorectal cancer after an extended latency, childhood cancers and cancers of the gall bladder, adrenal gland and small intestine.

Pulmonary: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) caused by smoking, known as tobacco disease, is a permanent, incurable reduction of pulmonary capacity characterized by shortness of breath, wheezing, persistent cough with sputum, and damage to the lungs, including emphysema and chronic bronchitis.

Cardiovascular: Inhalation of tobacco smoke causes several immediate responses within the heart and blood vessels. Within one minute the heart rate begins to rise, increasing by as much as 30 percent during the first 10 minutes of smoking. Carbon monoxide in tobacco smoke exerts its negative effects by reducing the blood’s ability to carry oxygen.

Smoking also increases the chance of heart disease, stroke, atherosclerosis, and peripheral vascular disease. Several ingredients of tobacco lead to the narrowing of blood vessels, increasing the likelihood of a blockage, and thus a heart attack or stroke. According to a study by an international team of researchers, people under 40 are five times more likely to have a heart attack if they smoke.

Latest research has determined that cigarette smoke also influences the process of cell division in the cardiac muscle and changes heart's shape.

Tobacco has also been linked to Buerger's disease (thromboangiitis obliterans) the acute inflammation and thrombosis (clotting) of arteries and veins of the hands and feet.

Smoking tends to increase blood cholesterol levels. Furthermore, the ratio of high-density lipoprotein (the "good" cholesterol) to low-density lipoprotein (the "bad" cholesterol) tends to be lower in smokers compared to non-smokers.

A smoker may develop less significant disorders such as worsening or maintenance of unpleasant dermatological conditions, e.g. eczema, due to reduced blood supply. Smoking also increases blood pressure and weakens blood vessels.

Oral: Perhaps the most serious oral condition that can arise is that of oral cancer. Other cancers include cancers of the oral cavity (lip, tongue, mouth, throat), esophagus, larynx, and lung. Roughly half of periodontitis or inflammation around the teeth cases attributed to current or former smoking. Smokeless tobacco causes gingival recession and white mucosal lesions. Smoking has been proven to be an important factor in the staining of teeth and Halitosis or bad breath is common among tobacco smokers. Tooth loss has been shown to be 2 to 3 times higher in smokers than in non-smokers. In addition, complications may further include leukoplakia the adherent white plaques or patches on the mucous membranes of the oral cavity, including the tongue, and a loss of taste sensation or salivary changes.

Infection: Tobacco is also linked to susceptibility to infectious diseases, particularly in the lungs. Smoking more than 20 cigarettes a day increases the risk of tuberculosis by two to four times, and being a current smoker has been linked to a fourfold increase in the risk of invasive pneumococcal disease.

The usage of tobacco also increases rates of infection: common cold and bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, emphysema and chronic bronchitis in particular.

The effects on the immune system include an increase in CD4+ cell production attributable to nicotine, which has tentatively been linked to increased HIV susceptibility. Smoking reduces the risk of Kaposi's sarcoma in people without HIV infection.

The dangers of secondhand smoke

Secondhand smoke is a mixture of smoke from the burning end of a cigarette, pipe or cigar and the smoke exhaled from the lungs of smokers. It is involuntarily inhaled, lingers in the air hours after cigarettes have been extinguished, and can cause a wide range of adverse health effects, including cancer, respiratory infections, and asthma. Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke increase their heart disease risk by 25–30% and their lung cancer risk by 20–30%. Secondhand smoke has been estimated to cause 38,000 deaths per year, of which 3,400 are deaths from lung cancer in non-smokers.

The current Surgeon General’s Report concluded that there is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Even short exposures to secondhand smoke can cause blood platelets to become stickier, damage the lining of blood vessels, decrease coronary flow velocity reserves, and reduce heart rate variability, potentially increasing the risk of heart attack. New research indicates that private research conducted by cigarette company Philip Morris in the 1980s showed that secondhand smoke was toxic, yet the company suppressed the finding during the next two decades.

Secondhand smoke is also connected to sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Infants who die from SIDS tend to have higher concentrations of nicotine and cotinine (a biological marker for secondhand smoke exposure) in their lungs than those who die from other causes. While smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of SIDS, infants exposed to secondhand smoke after birth are also at a greater risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome whether or not the parent(s) smoked during pregnancy.

The nicotine obtained from smoking travels through a woman into her breast milk, thus giving nicotine to her child.

Secondhand smoke has been associated with between 150,000 and 300,000 lower respiratory tract infections in infants and children under 18 months of age, resulting in between 7,500 and 15,000 hospitalizations each year. It is associated with 430 SIDS deaths annually in the United States alone. Australia it is approx 200 annually.

Secondhand smoke is known to harm children, infants and reproductive health through acute lower respiratory tract illness, asthma induction and exacerbation, chronic respiratory symptoms, middle ear infection, lower birth weight babies, and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or SIDS.

Did you know that cigarette addiction has been compared to heroin addiction?

Cigarette smoking kills more people every year than a herion overdose. However unlike the other, cigarette smoking is legal, and taxed by the government in most places.

Did you know that studies have shown that ciggarettes could be as addictive as heroin?

How scary are those facts! Makes you wonder why cigarettes are legal.

Environment Issues

Another problem with cigarettes is their inabiltity to biodegrade. Depending on environment conditions they can take as long as 10–15 years to biodegrade! It is estimated that 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are littered each year which makes cigarettes and cigarette butts 24.7% of garbage. That is over twice as many as any other item that gets collected as garbage!

So what are the implications if cigarettes were made illegal?

Ok, so what would happen if the governments in most countries made ciggarettes illegal?

Many cigarette smokers would go through withdrawals. There would be a high demand for selling cigarettes on the black markets.

People in cigarette industries would lose their jobs.

The governments would no longer gain tax from ciggarette taxes.

Less people would die from cigarette related dieases/condtions.

The environment would not suffer as much from littering.

What do you think?

Should cigarettes become illegal?

This is really amazing. I'm 16 and I've smoked some, and I can see how it can be addicting and it's so horrible to see people get sucked into it. Drugs just mess up people's lives and that's what our world's becoming.

2.) I believe that cigarettes should be legal, if someone wants to smoke than let them, the government shouldn’t mandate and control peoples lives. If someone wants to make the choice to smoke than that’s there issue, and it should concern know one but themselves. Not only would the government be taking away a simple freedom to put into your body what you please, but also with the way the economy is, if we were to remove the revenue that the government made from cigarette taxes than we would be even further in debt, and not only that but thousands upon thousands of people would be fired which would lead to foreclosures and less spending which inevitably further disrupts the economy.

Yes, I think cigarettes should become illegal. They are deadly and not needed although the smokers may think they do need it. It just messes with your brain and it's not worth it.

Yes. They should be illegal because they are causing many people to die from respitory diseases, and or decrease in lung fuctions.

My parents smoke! I hate it! I'm just 13 and I have a 4 year old sister! I'm really worried about not just mine and my sister's health but my parents' health too! I go out the room whenever my parents smoke. I try to tell them how much it's affecting them but they never listen. I tell them that it's badly affecting the whole family! I try to get them to stop. I tell them it will be their fault if I get a disease related to breathing in smoke from them! I think it should be made illegal! I mean it's addictive! It's a drug! It's not illegal because the gouvernment will lose money, they don't want that, they don't think about the children! All they care about is money! They don't care about how many people die from smoking! It's digusting! :(

I believe that cigarettes should be illegal. It kills more people than any other drug and it's takenso many lives already. I mean, kids without parents or grandparents--or even friends. If you're reading this you are not only kiling yourself but you are killing the people around you too.

The reason it is taking them "so long" to ban smoking, well theres to reasons.

1) if they did illegalize smoking, there would be an erruption of illegal activity all over the world so ppl can satisfy cravings. people get addicted to the point were they would do ANYTHING for a smoke.

2) the bastards make way to much money off of it. why would they want to ban something that lets them keep that freaking mansion .

i am totally against smoking. my grandparents died from it and i promised them i would never smoke. i was so i dint have to go through the pain, not only the physical pain, but the mental pain of seeing my entire family and friends watch me lie there and die. its not worth it. seeing someone you love in that position it is so not worth it

Everyone that thinks that cigarettes should be made illegal is incredibly ignorant, and plain stupid. There would not even be a USA if it was not for tobacco. If people really do not want to be around smoking, then try and find somewhere in this world where it is illegal, then move there. And stay there.

John 4 years ago

If i were the government...

It should be banned ANY type of advertising, and have a stronger campaign against the cigarettes. This way, you would reduce the younger people that gets caught into the bad habit because they think it's "cool". When I say any, it means the boxes should be white and just display a very little text that says the brand.

Then, I would regulate the things they put into the cigarettes. they put into the cigarettes ammonia, DDT, tar, arsenic. All of that, gone. With this I reduce the impact of smoking on health, thus the money spent on treating smoking-related diseases.

And last, I would promote the treatments for getting out of the addiction.

This way, the consumption of tobacco would get down and down, to the point that the murder companies would get away from the country.

Of course, this is a long-term solution, but is soft compared to the direct and strict prohibition.

Everyone knows how bad smoking is, and none should be allowed to smoke-- you might say they can do whatever they want but smoking affects people around them too. If smoking could kill them alone- let them do it, but they cannot just go around suffocating non-smokers and getting more people addicted. Grow up, people! Do we want to smoke, kill ourselves, everyone around us and kids of generations to come??

I think smoking should be illegal because people die from smoking. My mom smokes and it smells horrible when she just comes in the house after smoking a cigarette and I try not to breathe it in because me and my sister could get lung cancer too. Smoking is poisonous to almost all or all living things. I always try to get her to stop but she gets mad. Okay, first of all. Smoking is not at all like commiting suicide. My great great aunt has been chain smoking her entire life and she is still in excellent health, she's turning 90 in a couple of months. It also doesn't ruin your physical fitness as my father has also been smoking for about 37 years and he has a job that requires alot of physical activity and whenever he takes the young guys who are non smokers, they get tired extremely quickly and can't do it and he can still do it with ease. Also, the world record for oldest person was by a a smoker. She only quit when she was 117 and died at 122. I believe that banning tobacco sales would have the same effect, or worse as alcohol prohibition did in the '20s.

john wagner 4 years ago

What bothers me the most is not that tobacco is so horrible and still literally all over the world completely legal along with alcohol but is that people know this yet refuse to look at the facts.

People complain about the Illuminati going to one day control the world and kill everyone, what the hell do you think has been going on for centuries now? Why do you think Obama completely ignores tobacco but is willing to say Marijuana hurts your lungs.

The Illuminati(If existant)is already controlling the population with those substances, there is no other logical reason in the world this has gone on for so long and yet not a single thing has been done about it. Company made tobacco is literally poison, yet people will still smoke it and they know that those 440,000 deaths year are keeping places less populated not including deaths from alcohol.

So lets think this out, obviously that's not the only part. They are making mass amounts of money off of those deaths. They are making mass amounts of money off the crimes committed and people prosecuted for them under the influence of alcohol.

How long is the world going to let itself be contained in such ridiculous contradicting stupidity for the sole purpose of money?

You also have to really ask yourself when did paper or shiny objects become more valuable than a persons life. The world is a terrible place and no matter what happiness may arise from it i can promise you there is evil that reigns over it from angle.

If you want to take your chances with a product that literally has label telling you, you could cancer from it. Fine, but i do not want to hear presidents talking about the minimal effects on your lungs Marijuana has.

Especially considering you can vaporize Marijuana and no Tobacco even vaporized still creates so much tar it could never be as safe as Marijauna no matter how its consumed.

No offense Jake but i could careless how long your family members have lived smoking. Im sure there are crack addicts who have beaten the odds and lived full lives, in no way does it make it right or acceptable for it to be ignored in the way it is.

Bottom line Jake the topic is about the contradictions in all this nonsense. The Government will give drugs that cause the same effects tobacco does as Class 1 drugs, yet they are legal and they never are talked about from a governmental point of view and i mean never.

You can even watch the CIA in court sit silent when the defendents says "Well what about tobacco and alcohol?". When you see the head of the CIA completely ignore that alcohol and tobacco are far worse than cannabis could ever be or grow to be, you know there is tons of corruption going on all over the world.

Its not like i even care about cannabis being legal globally either, all i care about is a world that makes sense.

My thing is any responsible individual can do drugs without getting addicted or abusing the drug. Of course some drugs completely cross that line of control and i completely agree should be illegal but what is going on today is insane.

For instance the government still supplies 4 people in the US with cannabis, yes they actually had a program for their older workers to get medical cannabis straight from the government, many were cut off but they seriously still supply just 4 people, one of them admitted to how ridiculous it is to be her, getting government mailed pot while watching peoples lives be completely ruined for just carrying any. Oddly they constantly tell us its horrible and should be treated nothing less than something as addicting and deadly as heroin. Yet they supply it to people who clearly show none of the symptoms that a long term heroin user would see.

I know the reason its still illegal in the way it is and seen and presented in the way it is, simply because of these companies hold over the government plus the governments population control benefits from these drugs and the money they make off the mistakes people make on them or the hospital bills they get from them.

Its like when people finally realized racism was wrong, they realized black people arent what everyone has said they were. So why do things like this still exist in this day and age, its truly sad and pathetic.

It should be as simple as it doesn't make any sense therefor it needs to be rethought. God forbid they ever rethink the ridiculous laws they make until people start dying and its brought directly to the worlds attention like slavery.

Personally i highly doubt people would be buying tobacco illegally if it became illegal, those people would buy cannabis i assure you. One reason they like smoking cigarettes so much is simply because they don't have to worry about things like that attached to something as harmless as cannabis.

I use to smoke. I felt if I worried about getting cancer or ill from cigarettes I would be safe. A friend who smoked asked me how I quit. This simple logic did it. Nicotine makes pockets in our fibrous muscle strands and nerve-ending lines, in which when after a poison is washed out or an injury wound swelling can go down. The sides of the pockets naturally want to shrink in to heal the sore and effected areas. But with nicotine, every drag helps those pockets relax and quit trying to pull sides in to close and heal the strands of tissues. When we go through the withdrawal for a few minutes or longer. These tissue strands pockets try to re-close and that is what we feel inside when we go through a withdrawal. I know this to be fact because of microbia and microscopic studies I've been doing. Plus I found something new in our dna that made me realize that dna patterns are maybe changing every minute to help aid other ways for us to heal. And this may prove another theory and something very scary for humanity. Contact me for more research if you like.

Alcohol should not be banned. In fact one drink a day is good for you. Whoever said smoking should be legal is a smoker or doesn't care. It's not only smokers. As a teen I got asthma from all that smoke my sister exhaled. She died last year from a heart attack. People end up in tears or even commit suicide because loved ones die. Babies die from smoking mums and also from the nicotine in breast milk. Second hand smoke kills millions of people. If a parent gets cancer or heart disease, the other family members are at a higher risk and it can be that deadly. Smokers aren't alone. If I am not treated early enough I can collapse or stop breathing for a while. Smoking should be illegal with other drugs.

Anne 4 years ago

They can legalize it only if they get rid of the useless dangerous crap. Smokers like it, but if they want the nicotine just buy nicotine pills because like caffeine in low doses without crap in it you are fine. Sure everyone dies but we want to live and we care. If you want to die I would die with you. (isn't that what you would say to a loved one)

i like them

Sid 4 years ago

They should not be made illegal as long as its not bothering anyone else.but that's where the problem lies doesn't it?If you're home alone or around other people who don't mind then fine.Just stay the frig away from me.

McKenzie Lasser 4 years ago

Do i think smoking should be illegal? yes i do , if they can make weed, cocain and other drugs that havnt killed or gave a deases to many people but yet smoking can give off alot of dieses that drug don't. more people die each year from smoking rather than drugs, and if you don't beleive me then you can look it up, but YES I DO THINK THAT SMOKING SHOULD BE ILLEGAL !

i agree with my ciggy biggy (aka my fiancée) should be illegal and also agree with firefox1010

tray bushers 4 years ago

i think every comment here is completely irrational, for I work for a cigarette company and it's my job to distribute them. I have four children and a wife, if cigarettes become illegal I'd have no job to support not only my loving family but my very sick mother who had cancer from smoking my companies cigarettes . . . DO YOU SEE MY POINT?????!!!!!!!!!

firefox1010 4 years ago

Erm, yeah, you might have no job but if would be saving plenty a peoples lives if cigarettes weren't legal. Im very sorry about your mother. xo

ciggy biggy 4 years ago

look Mr Bushers, if you didn't contribute to their company like millions of other people than elderly citizens like your mother wouldn't have cancer and wouldn't be suffering in every day life

tray bushers 4 years ago

i tend to agree but its the only way I can finance my very under privileged family Mr/Miss Biggy, it's not my fault my mother has ended up in this state, simply the person who created the cigarettes in the first place! I SAY GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR!!!

Everything we do in our society kills us. I see anti-smoking ads all day long. I like to smoke a cigar every now and then, doctors tell me basically hey anything in moderation isn't that bad. Also, why do I not see any anti-fast food ads? I am sure that by eating all that bk lounge is gonna kill you just as fast a smoking will.

Des Smith 3 years ago

It would be interesting to see what % of the survey you did are smokers and what % of them would like to see smoking made illegal. I suspect a surprisingly high amount would support it. From my own study, research interviews and tests my theory is that if nicotime was made illegal ( unavailable ) it would not be that hard to quit. Smoking is, as you rightly point out is as much a mental addiction as a physical one. By removing the object of the addiction the mental side then becomes an ally against the addiction and simply 'gets over it'.

Yes it is your choice to smoke, but why should your bad decisions effect us who choose not too?

Cigarettes shouldn't be illegal. But what SHOULD be is cigarette companies adding chemicals to them that are killing faster and doing major lung damage. The deadly equation here is greed and corruption of the tobacco companies and everyone should sue to get it all stopped.

liliana 3 years ago

Nobody gives a flying fuck rats ass if you smokers want to slowly commit suicide by drowning your frustrations with cigarettes. Smoking should be Illegal it's not fair to other individuals who value their lives to have to inhale those toxic fumes that eat away at your gums and lungs.

Michelle 3 years ago

You guys are immature, but bottom line is don't smoke. It's plain and simple folks.

Derek 3 years ago

Yes cigarette smoking is extremely harmful to your health. I think everyone knows that. That being said if I know the dangers and I decide I want to smoke anyway who are you or anyone else to tell me I can't?

I do not smoke, but I did for a few years. I was addicted and I managed to quit it was extremely hard but never once did I think "Why couldn't cigarettes be illegal then this would have never happen?" Instead I realized I made a mistake and I dealt with the consequences. Looking back I don't regret smoking; I learnt a good deal about addiction because of it, and did not smoke long enough to suffer any major health effects.

Let it go people. I know the dangers of smoking and I choose to smoke because I enjoy it. I truly believe you guys have no idea what the impact would be if we banned smoking. Wake up!! And to everyone saying it needs to be banned because it kills is got to be kidding me. Tobacco does not kill. Just like guns don't kill. Cars don't kill. Its the people who use them that kill. I can't stand ignorant people who thinks the world revolves around them. One person here claimed that you shouldn't smoke because they don't like it. What? For real? Welcome to the real world people. I don't care if you don't like it. I don't care for stupid comments but that doesn't entitle me to special rights. Take care of yourself people and I will worry about me. Don't tread on me with your wants.

Smoking kills. Sure. But only if you smoke too much(or if you already have a disease, (like lung cancer,) or a tendency to get such a disease.) All of the things listed in their chemical list are already things that are in the air... Doesn't make them okay, but it is still important to realize. Alcohol kills way more people than cigarettes. That doesn't mean alcohol should be illegal. It means that people shouldn't get drunk and beat their wives or drive their car and run people over...

Cigarettes should be illegal. Legalize marijuana. It doesn't kill you!

bob 2 years ago

smoking is bad

J ulius 2 years ago

Might as well make crack and heroin legal too, those and nicotine are pretty much the same, just nicotine is legal, if it was to go off the market, smokers would act just like crack heads and heroin junkies, real shaky and do damn near anything to get the nicotine high, I would make tobacco illegal though, not safe for anyone.

akoI2 2 years ago

smoking should be illegalize because it causes bad problems like respiratory diseases, yes it have positive side like strong memory yet it still brings bad problems so one word "illegalize"

Yes take these nasty things off the market and provide a cheap easy way for those who smoke to get off them.I think its very un right that the cig companies get away with murdering people.Stopping cigs is hard very hard and it angers me looking at easy ways to stop then seeing that the company has ADDED stuff to keep you smoking.THAT'S MEAN OF THEM...

Get them off market now who cares if the killers loose jobs.

It is immoral to set limits on somebody's body, smoking is not a large health concern it is a personal choice we make. People hate the smell of it and think the image is bad but meanwhile they live a sedentary obese lifestyle full of McDonalds. I am a healthy physically fit individual I choose to smoke and I do not wish to live past 70 step in my way and ill smite your fat ass

Africa 23 months ago

That first responder was obvlousiy high while writing his response .Anyways, what helped or worked for me was smoking cheaper smokes that taste real bad. I could only handle to light it and then put it out. Averaging about 1-2 smokes per day. It was a re-light festival until I finally decided I just didn't want it anymore. That was after 24 years of smoking and a whole lot more per day than you too so you may see quicker results. A whole lot of it is mind set too. Good Luck

I'm generally against government intervention in consumer products, even if those products are potentially detrimental. We are now reading articles about the government placing an extra tax on soda pop drinks. Soda pop, candy, junk food can lead to obesity, so the obvious answer is to just get rid of it all.

If you want to live in a "nanny" state, the US seems like the ideal place. The government has removed all sorts of "over-the-counter" products, like the original Nyquil because some few have learned how to abuse it.

How far can this protectionism take us? How can we prevent people from jumping out of windows or off bridges or using razor blades? Let's eliminate automobiles because so many people die in traffic accidents.

How about eliminating wars first? They don't seem very healthy.
