Fruits & Vegetables Will Protect Against Lung Cancer!

If you smoke, here's some encouraging news about how you can protect yourself from lung cancer.

A recent study in the Netherlands followed 450,000+ people. The participants were provided with diet and nutrition questionnaires that asked how often they consumed 14 common fruits and 26 varied vegetables. The results were meaningful.

After almost nine years of follow up, about 1600 people were diagnosed with lung cancer. However, researchers found that the risk was less in those smokers who consumed lots of different vegetables. They also found a lower risk of squamous cell carcinoma in the lung when smokers ate lots of different veggies and fruits.

The study was published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

Fruits, Veggies & Lung Cancer: More News!

The study stresses that it's not only the amount of fruits and vegetables consumed, but the diversity of those fruits and vegetables, meaning you must eat lots of different types of these nutritional and protective foods to gain the benefit!

Dr. Bueno-de-Mesquita, Netherlands’ National Institute for Public Health and the Environment, said, “Fruits and vegetables contain many different bioactive compounds, and it makes sense to assume that it is important that you not only eat the recommended amounts, but also consume a rich mix of these bioactive compounds by consuming a large variety." It's always been said that "variety is the spice of life" and now we know in more ways than one!
