How Teen Suicide Epidemic Grows | TWLOHA To Write Love on Her Arms Tells How Megan Matures

Learning about Suicide in this Country

BREAKING NEWS | Having a schoolmate commit suicide significantly increases the chance that a teenager will consider or attempt suicide themselves, according to a new study in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).

___________________________

We have all heard about the Health Epidemics in this country, including diabetes, heart disease, obesity, cancer and MRSA. What about suicide? It didn't cross my mind that it could be totally out of control. You hear about the celebrity drug overdoses, college students jumping off of bridges during finals, lovers who break up, and now veterans of war. This story is about teen suicide.

Across the board, it affects all people, their families and communities. I'm wondering about the many causes for this epidemic and must we take each person's story as an individual case or categorize them to help us understand what is happening in our society?

Writing about teen suicide started with a song. A love song and someone who followed me on Twitter. @TWLOHA is the profile name. People follow each other for some time without searching out exactly what is their message. Why are they there reaching out? Today, I found out.

TWLOHA means To Write Love On Her Arm and represents a young person who was without hope and needed someone to help her. Her act of desperation was to cut herself and bleed out her life force, hoping someone would save her. She smiles as she says there is a purpose to her life and that she has affected another person for good. After listening to Renee's own words in the small video at the top of the page, please listen to this young man's dramatic interpretation in his poetry and song below. First a musical interlude because music is a universal language.

Music That Expresses These Feelings | Avril Lavigne Sings "Nobody's Home" that expresses the feelings of a young person who doesn't know where she belongs. She wants to go home. She is broken inside with no place to go to dry her eyes. She asks people to open your eyes and look outside and find why you have been rejected. Looking back into the past, she doesn't know where she belongs, but nobody is home. There is no place to go. She feels her feelings and she is losing her mind, going insane, losing her faith and fallen from grace and is all over the place.

In Your Own Back Yard

Suicide in America Today

We learn that depression is treatable and rescue is possible but you have to reach out.

This young man has memorized the words, they come straight from the heart, he has been there and describes the emotions in a poem. What is it to feel like you have been cut so deep with such a scar that you attempt to cut this aching wound from yourself? He tells the story of Renee, who was raped and unable to get out of a life of pain so turns to the only way she knows how to numb herself. She turns to heavy drugs and alcohol.

The answer of his poem is talking, opening up the lines of communication, letting the person in pain know that s/he is not alone and that there is love.

TWLOHA is the response to a story of one individual that represents all of us

At one time or another we have all felt failure, regret, and some condition of hopelessness. Have we all felt 'broken'? I don't know, but this is the feeling expressed here in this poem song.

How can one feel alive again, willing to grasp a hold of life? The answer is HOPE. Living within a community that has a mission of healing each other through thoughts, words and actions. Finding freedom, the opposite of entrapment, is the expression of this hope. Even though it is just an idea, a prayer and a dream for the future, it can become a reality.

A Helpful Book ~~~>>>>

Out of the Nightmare receives five stars from readers. Author, David Conroy, executive director of Suicide Prevention Resources in New York City, relieves many of their guilt feelings for thinking of and attempting suicide. He provides tools, not drugs, for those in need to slowly climb out into the light.

He breaks down the feelings of depression into the elements of shame, envy, self-pity, grandiosity, fear, stigma, and prejudice. These feelings contribute to a person contemplating suicide.

Reviewers caution readers to take this book bit by bit to digest the information slowly. One cannot jump from the depths of depression to a bright and sunny outlook. So, too, take this one page at a time and get help. David helps people remove the social stigma of this disease.

Suicide is at Epidemic Proportions in America

The video begins with a statistic of 17 million Americans who suffer depression. The number is cold. It has no meaning until you are touched by the voice of one soul who cries out in the dark broken midnight. Then you realize that there is a speck of her in all of us.

In reality we carry all emotions and feelings and can feel compassion and empathy for those who have reached the depths of depression. A few are touched to the point of action. Some make an attempt, a gesture for help to be rescued, others successfully succumb to their addictions, and others hold out their hands to help another person step out of the darkness.

Can it be that two thirds of those in a state of depression are never treated because they don't know how to ask for help, they live in an untenable situation of entrapment, they feel there is no hope, there is no one to turn to or the costs are too high?

A Source of Help

Online Crisis Prevention Center was formed to help young people coping with depression. Watch the video above to learn what can be accomplished by those who care. These 'interns' learn how to help and support those people who are struggling with contemporary life. They communicate with youth who write their heartaches on the internet.

Just like Hubpages is a community of people and personalities, FaceBook connects many of the younger generation who are searching for answers and a helping hand, in addition to sharing photos, thoughts and life experiences. If you thought the internet is a totally virtual world, by using it as a communication tool it becomes a vital part of helping each other.

TWLOHA started a MySpace [towriteloveonherarms] which was much more popular for the younger set. Presently, they are highlighting the Movie ECLIPSE with an interview with Taylor Lautner (Tay-Tay). You can see this is about a Love Story and a "Broken" heart, a common theme for people trying to find each other in this crazy world. His favorite part is when two people "connect" and "understand" each other.

  • This movie grossed $68.5 million, shown in approximately 8000 theaters in a record 4,416 locations.

TWLOHA is a bridge for those who are suffering in pain through depression which may lead to suicide.

Three Years Later Do You See A Transformation?

This is Renee. Has her attitude changed? Just like any addiction, there is a lifetime struggle to stay in a place of light, to care for self, to realize you are not alone, and to continue to think positively. Tell me what you have learned from this one person who is vulnerable and helpless. Will you take action to tell someone you love them right now?

Through communication and community and the opportunity with relationships with people to love people you can succeed. You can be free to express yourself. You can feel like you have been heard, understood and cared for in this world.

COUNSELING AND HOMEOPATHY

Getting help means finding someone who knows how to listen. Besides going through a detox program to get clean and sober, it takes incredible strength to open up and express what is going on inside. Find someone trained to handle depression.

Homeopathy can provide an additional layer of support through gentle energetic remedies and a compassionate therapist. Visit my other hubs to learn more about homeopathy. See the FOUR HUBS Listed in the right hand column. They are not geared to depression, but show the extent to which homeopathy treats both physical, emotional and mental symptoms.

Giving Hope and Healing

Have you helped another person when they have been down?

  • Yes, I have supported another person during a difficult time
  • Yes, it was a very memorable event in my life
  • No, I don't recall a specific time when I have helped another person

  • Breaking the Social Stigma Surrounding Depression and Suicide
Scooby Deb says if you are in crisis you can call this number. Deb tells her own personal story. In the United States alone, more than half a million people attempt suicide annually and about 30,000 people succumb without being saved by someone or having their suicide signals noticed. Taking one's own life has become the 11th leading cause of death in America. Deb started her search for answers after the death of her father.

  • Depression - Signs of Depression
Habee wrote all about the signs of depression including the sudden disinterest in things that normally interested the individual, the change in appearance, the looks of sadness, and feelings of isolation. A person will show signs of energy loss, confusion, desire to sleep excessively and either over or under eating. A person could feel pain with emptiness and digestive issues, which all go together with irritability, nervousness and guilty feelings. Persons with depression may have headaches, but they differ from a regular stress headache. This article is no longer available.

  • Teen Depression Why Suicide
When you lose a friend to suicide, you have to speak out and let others know about the pain the person suffered and the pain of those left behind. This Hubpages tribute to Emilio, a lost friend, provides startling suicide figures. Did you know that 8 out of 10 teenagers who commit suicide ask for help right before the event? Not enough people recognize those signs.

Pay attention and take notice of the particular changes in behavior and reach out to help improve the negative thoughts that cycle within a depressed teen. Every eighty seconds an adolescent attempts to take his or her life, with those between the ages of 15-24 at highest risk in America. I learned that suicide is considered the third highest cause of death in that age range, with homicide second and vehicular accidents first. This article is no longer available.

  • The Bridge - Suicide and the Golden Gate Bridge (unlisted)
People attempt to take their own lives in many ways, whether alcohol, overdose on pills, slit their wrists or jumping out of a window or off a bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, California attracts people and has a magnetic pull for those who contemplate leaving this earth. I wonder whether they feel someone will save them or there may be a possibility of surviving the fall when they go into the water.

The Golden Gate Bridge that people cross over in their vehicles, on foot or bicycle has a height of over 245 feet and has become the first place people select to take their life in the entire world.

The bridge opened to the public on May 27, 1937 and the first suicide occurred just three months later. This incredible Hubpages documents the lives of some of the people who have taken their own lives or lived to tell the story by jumping off of a bridge. We find people of all ages, with a total of 1400 suicides, one video survivor interview and some photos excellent of the bridge. Noticeably you will see the names of teenagers that appear to be in the majority.

  • Suicide is not Painless
Lady Jane opens up with her own experience during her teen years through depression and a suicide attempt. Fortunately, she also lived to tell. Suicide doesn’t just affect the person through their self destruction, this suicidal act actually affects more people than the person realizes. Because a person in the depressive frame of mind feels unworthy, unwanted, uncared for and isolated, they do not realize that their family, friends and even people they work with really care if they live or die.

Jane says, "People that kill themselves do not think that there is anything left for them or they feel like they are failures in their life. Some think that they cannot live without someone in their life, such as a boyfriend, girlfriend, husband, wife, or best friend . They also don’t realize that others are not responsible for their happiness and only they can do that for themselves. And maybe the temptation and propensity to choose suicide as a way out of difficulties runs through families." She has a lot to tell and encourage others. Good read.

Im glad you've written this hub giving people an opportunity to know more about TWLOHA. They visited the college campus where I work and many of the students were deeply affected by their presentation. One of them wrote her research paper on TWLOHA. I was struck by the fact that they have done a good job of narrowing the focus of their efforts--they just want to make people aware of the signs someone else needs help and motivate them to be on the front line of helping them. As a college instructor, I'm often one of the people on the front lines helping college students get the help they need. Giving a place to find help is so important.

Hello Rochel ~ I found out about this issue from someone in my Twitter stream. Then I began to investigate more and learn about the number of young depressed people who attempt to escape their problems via suicide. Since it has come out in the open, there are more facilities, but certainly not enough to accommodate all those in need. Blessings, Debby
