Surprising Natural Ways to Increase Fertility

Some couples seem to have the gift of getting pregnant just by looking at each other. For others, it takes a perfect aligning of the cosmos just to ovulate. Many women need a little extra help getting pregnant and want to turn to natural fertility treatments. The following methods are natural fertility boosters that may improve your chances of conception. None of these are “get pregnant quick” schemes or infertility cures, but they may be useful as a fertility supplement to your overall pregnancy plans. Be sure to use these strategies in moderation, and inform your doctor of any alternative methods you are using to improve fertility as they may interact with medical treatments.

Fertility CM: Use to Improve Cervical Mucus

Fertility CM

Fertiliity CM is a natural fertility supplement designed to improve the quality of cervical mucus, making it thinner and more abundant. Fertility CM promotes endometrial secretions to build a healthy uterine lining for implantation. It also stimulates female arousal and sexual sensitivity.

Cough Expectorant:

What does cough medicine have anything to do with fertility? Well, a lot if you are someone who struggles with poor or hostile cervical mucus. Sperm just can’t swim in some environments, such as when the cervical mucus is too thick or sparse.

One easy and over-the-counter treatment is to use a cough expectorant; the active ingredient is called guaifenesin.  Guaifenesin improves cervical mucus by thinning it out- just like in your lungs when you have a chest cold. The sperm are better able to travel through thin cervical mucus, increasing the chance of conception.

One of the most recognized brands of cough expectorant is Robitussin, however there are plenty of other brands and generic labels that contain guaifenesin. The most important thing is to use the kind that contains only guaifenesin. If you buy Robitussin, make sure it has no other letters behind it, like DM. Decongestants are frequently found in cough medicine, but these actually dry up cervical mucus.

Current recommendations suggest taking guaifenesin 200mg three times a day in the several days leading up to and the day of ovulation. You’ll know it’s working well if your cervical mucus is thin, clear, stretchy, and looks like egg whites.

FertiliTea

FertiliTea is an herbal tea containing Vitex Agnus Castus (Chasteberry), Green Tea, Red Raspberry, Ladies Mantle, Nettle Leaf, and Peppermint Leaf. These herbal ingredients are well-known and effective natural remedies for fertility. The tea is organic and loose leaf, plus it smells and tastes great!

Green Tea:

Somebody advised me once to never trust a tea drinker- good thing I never listened. It turns out that tea drinkers, especially green tea drinkers, may have had it right all along. In moderation, green tea may be a great addition to your overall “get pregnant” strategy.

A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that tea drinkers doubled their odds of conceiving each month. These results were surprising given that some substances found in tea, such as caffeine and tannic acid, can impair conception. But it appears that something about tea somehow helps in increasing fertility.

Other studies go on to say that green tea has the most beneficial effects. Green tea is higher in powerful antioxidants than other types of teas, but much lower in the harmful components, like tannic acid and caffeine. If you are looking for natural remedies for fertility, then adding green tea to your diet is an easy and inexpensive method.

Realize that the benefits of green tea come in small amounts. Positive effects in the above studies were seen in as little as ½ cup a day. Drinking large amounts of green tea may have negative effects on fertility. Green tea does contain caffeine, which can be harmful to reproductive health. Large amounts of green tea may deplete folic acid levels in the body- an important nutrient for fetal development. So if you do start imbibing on green tea, you will definitely want to take extra folic acid supplements. Green tea also has anticoagulant effects, so check with your doctor if you have a bleeding disorder or are on anticoagulant therapy.

High-fat Dairy Products:

Finally, an excuse for that late-night ice cream fix! Keep in mind, we’re not talking cartons and cartons of ice cream- maintaining a healthy diet and an ideal weight is very important for increasing fertility. However, all that work you’ve been putting into keeping a low-fat diet may not be the best for reproductive health.

Researchers from Harvard found that women who ate modest amounts of full-fat dairy products had better fertility rates than low-fat dairy dieters. The reason behind the link between dairy products and increased fertility isn’t clear. It may be that certain nutrients are lost in the process to lower fat content in foods.

It’s also important to note that high-fat dairy products should be used in modest amounts, such as one serving a day. If you’re going to choose full-fat varieties, it’s best to choose nutrient dense foods, such as milk, cheese, and yogurt. Also try to decrease other sources of saturated fats in your diet.

(Just be careful not to boast too loudly to friends that you’re using Ben & Jerry to get pregnant- that’s how gossip gets started, you know).

Acupuncture:

Who says trying to get pregnant has to be a stressful process? Many women find acupuncture to be a relaxing and effective natural fertility aid. Acupuncture for fertility has been shown to help a number of issues, such as fallopian tube spasms (but not blocked tubes), luteal phase defect, polycystic ovarian syndrome, and many other issues. It can also be used to alleviate other medical issues that may affect fertility, such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Acupuncture for fertility seems to work on a few different levels. It increases blood supply to the reproductive organs, improving function of the ovaries and nourishing the uterus. Acupuncture may release and balance hormones that help reproductive function. And, of course, there’s the “feel good” factor- a benefit not to be taken lightly. Anything that can help you relax, de-stress, and feel wonderful can only help fertility.

Make sure to find a licensed, board certified acupuncturist who specializes in fertility disorders. After in vitro fertilization or insemination, there are several acupuncture points that need to be avoided, so you definitely need to use a specialist.

Have Frequent Sex:

You’re probably either saying, “no kidding,” or you’re trying to quickly shut the computer down before your partner sees this section. But sex has more benefits than just conception; it seems that frequent sex is one of the best natural remedies for fertility.

Doing the deed more often doesn’t just increase the chance of conception, it can also help regulate your menstrual cycle. Research indicates that having a healthy sex life can positively affect your reproductive system. Having sex on at least a weekly basis can help balance your hormones and your ovulatory cycle.

Another recent study by an Australian doctor, David Greening, found that frequent sex may help the male side of fertility. This study announced that daily sex may improve male fertility by keeping the sperm healthy. Damage to sperm DNA can lead to chromosomal abnormalities, making conception difficult. Frequent sex seems to decrease this DNA damage to sperm, leading to healthier and more active sperm. Daily sex does decrease sperm quantity, but can greatly increase sperm quality.

And, if you’ve been doing this long enough, you probably know the toll that fertility issues can have on your relationships with your partner. Having more frequent sex throughout the month will make it more likely for you to make love, not war, with your partner!
