FAMILY: Ten Reasons Why We Need Family

1. Happiness

Happiness, true happiness that is, is something that is hard to come by for many people in this world; however, it is something that I have been blessed to have found in this life. Who gives me the happiness that the world so covets? My family - my husband and my daughter. My husband has this innate technique of making me laugh in the most appropriate circumstances...his silliness and my silliness have melded together in a way that we have made our own unique language that no one else could understand. How do you define happiness? I define happiness as knowing that every day you will wake up next to your best friend and feel the little fingers of a human that you have given life cutely poking your shoulder to remind you that, although it is Saturday, you still have to wake up early!

2. Comfort

When the world is weighing on your shoulders and you feel uncomfortable in your own skin, where do you find comfort? For me, there is only one place...at home with my family. As soon as I lay one foot in the door and the air within my home hits my skin, I feel an instant relief of worries and doubts. An immediate sense of comfort overwhelms me. I cannot say that this is due to where I live but who I l ive with. Having a husband that greets me with a kiss and a smile when I walk in the door and a daughter whose whole countenance brightens by ten times when coming home brings me the sense that I am truly home...and comfortable like nowhere else.

3. Belonging

While I was growing up, I remember feeling like I never fit in anywhere...I can't say that I didn't feel comfortable at my parents' house but the sincere sense of belonging wasn't exactly there. At least, it can't compare to belonging to my own family now. When you have your own family, you are ultimately and indefinitely needed...which is to say, you belong. It doesn't even matter if you feel innately different from your spouse or your children, because whether you know it or whether you want to admit it...you are very much similar to your family. Think about it...you wouldn't have gotten with your spouse if you didn't have something in common. And your kids?Well, they're just mini versions of us! So remember feeling like an outcast as a teenager? Well, when you have your own family you belong ...for good. (If you are a teenager reading this, you have something to look forward to! But for now, be happy and blessed that you have parents and siblings to enjoy!)

4. Dependence

We fight our entirely lives for a sense of independence, but what we never realize is that independence comes along with dependence. With having your own family, you will know that your family depends on you for certain things...with your spouse maybe it means sharing the chores, watching the kids so the other spouse can have a minute to breathe, splitting the bills, etc. With your kids it usually means...well, they depend on you for everything! The importance of having your kids being dependent on you is that you have the ability to show them how to grow up strong and earn independence. See what I'm saying? Independence comes from a strong dependence upon family.

So everyone depends on you but you think that you don't depend on them? You're wrong, Love! Even the most nurturing, super-mom or super-dad depends on their spouses and kids to depend on them! It's a never-ending circle of dependence...but it's a good thing. If you can't depend on your immediate family, who can you depend on?

5. Safety

You know that feeling when you are wrapped up in a warm blanket on a cold winter's day, sitting on the couch and you feel as if nothing could harm you? That is not only a feeling of comfort, but a feeling of safety. Your family and the essence of your household provides a safety net like none other...you will never need a security system again! Okay, maybe that's an exaggeration but you know what I mean!

6. Stability

Stability sort of goes hand-in-hand with dependence. Though the world feels ever-changing and quick paced, and you can't seem to get your head around the horrible events that seem to be plaguing our television screens...at least we have the confidence that our family is there. We know that our family and our house are stable in a world that is constantly evolving and so increasingly shaken.

7. Quality Time

As much time as we spend running around, taking care of our houses, driving our kids to dance or soccer practice, working full-time, making sure the laundry is done, and all of the other crazy never-ending tasks...you would think that there would be just as enough time to spend just enjoying your family's company. Unfortunately, life is busy and we do not always have the time to even realize that each minute with our families is precious. But we do have those special moments, during the holidays, or just during a sweet moment in the morning or evening-time when we realize just how special our family is to us. If we could take these moments and bottle them up and keep them forever, we would. But for now, we need to spend whatever left-over time we may have (whether it's on the weekends or even in the late evenings) in quality time with our family. Remember that many people in the world don't even have a family...and some have had their families taken away. So savor the good moments and try your best to make room/time for more!

8. Affection

Ahhh...affection. Some of us crave it...while some of us loathe it. Whatever your take or opinion on PDA and snuggles, affection is a wonderful part of having family. Whether you're a cuddly person or not, you must admit that a hug around the neck or kiss on the cheek from your baby girl or boy is priceless! Guess what? That is affection, too! When you tell your child that you love him or her, the affection is evident. When your wife makes your coffee in the morning and then gives you a kiss before you leave for work, that is affection. Affection is an infinite part of love...and love means family.

9. Reliance

You come home from work and your boss has ripped you a new one, your co-workers are just in it for themselves, the traffic was horrendous and a police officer pulled you over and ticketed you for something minor...you feel as though you can't rely on anyone in the world. One thing you didn't realize and many people tend to forget is that you may not be able to rely on the world but you can rely on your family. Even with as many issues or stresses that may come with having a family, your family will always be there...that is something that you can ALWAYS rely on.

10. Learning & Growth

My favorite and most important aspect of learning who I am as a person - growing through the love and support and experiences with my own family. I believe that I was still a child myself until I had my own child. Having a family of my own has taught me responsbility and about the more important things in life...things I didn't have and never knew about before I had my own family. I believe that life is about learning and growing...and our families are a constant part of this knowledge seeking and growth.

What have you learned from your family? How has having your own family helped you grow? Do you now appreciate life more than ever before?

I really love this hub. I think we continue to grow and learn each and every day. I love family but some times we do not get that, so we try until we do. My husband and I love our little family. Thank you for sharing, Stella

I absolutely adored this hub! I personally have always been a family over friendships type of person. At the end of the day, it is family that knows all of your flaws and loves you for all that you are.

My life started when i got my children. I was insecure, looking to find myself and so on. When I become a mother I realized that this is what life really is about. So much love, so much closeness. Your hub describes family in a wonderful and clear-sighted way, this should be something to read for a lot of people:-)

Love this, it is all so true and it makes me happy and feeling lucky that I have all these things in my life. This reminds me not to take any of these things for granted because I know families that don't share these values at all

Hello, d.william! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! The baby monkey riding on a pig video always brings a smile to my face so I had to post it. I am definitely blessed...and I thank the gods everyday! Here's blessing your family, as well. :)

Hey, Mar! Thanks so much, I'm glad you liked it. As for the possessions - the world is too focused on "things"...they need to be more focused on people and maybe the world would be a better place. Family has nothing to do with how much you own or how much money you have in the bank...and it never should. Thanks for the votes, love.:) Have a great week!

kittythedreamer,

What a beautiful list! I loved that I didn't find money or material possessions strewn anywhere throughout these simple but spot-on aspects of a balanced and good life.

Voted UP & UAB! Thank you and take care, mar.

Well done and stated kitty. Without family what do we really have in this world. For it is generally the good seed in our civilization. Every person was meant to have one and for those who don't we should open our hearts.

Beautiful hub Kitty - simple yet profound. As long as there is a good family around you, it's possible to cope with most things in life. That's why my heart goes out to anyone who has no family or for some reason has lost touch with them.
