The Hidden Agenda of Supermarket Steaks

Updated on November 21, 2016

Many people consume steaks. Who doesn't want to eat steak? It's a hearty meal for everyone. When people go to a barbecue feast, everybody wants to taste a piece of steak. But did you know there are ways to spot a good steak from the bad ones. There is a right way to shop for supermarket steaks. Most steaks are not rich in flavor while some steaks are better than most steaks that we buy from the supermarkets.

First thing that we should consider is the color of the steak. If the steak is deep red in color, then it has more flavor than the rest.

The second thing that we should look for is the marbling. If the marbling of the steak is evenly distributed, then it is a good buy. Prime steaks usually have good marbling.

Chef Roble Ali is a celebrity chef who knows a thing or two about spotting a good steak. According to Ali, there are different kinds of steak. The first one is called the skirt steak. It has the best flavor and has great texture. It is very tender and thin. According to Ali, some supermarkets change the date on the steak to make it appear fresh. If the steak has a lot of liquid in the package, then that steak is considered "old". The sour odor can determine that the steak is not edible. Another kind of steak is the sirloin steak. You can use this to make chili con carne but it is not good for cooking steak. There is also the New York steak. It is great in taste but more expensive. The filet mignon is the mother of all steaks. The downside of filet mignon is that it's overpriced. According to Ali, the most flavorless meats are more expensive.

Another kind of steak is the hanger steak, which is near the kidney. It has more blood flow in that area and therefore a lot tastier. If the steak is colored grey, then this should serve as a red flag because it is tasteless. Many vegetarians and health conscious individuals consume grass fed steaks. These have health benefits. It has Omega 3 fatty acids and is rich in Vitamin A. Grain fed steaks are also tastier and are properly raised so it is good for consumption.

We often see steaks that are categorized into three groups. These are Prime, Choice, and Select. You may think that they are one and the same but don't be fooled by their labels.

Prime steaks are high end steaks and could be bought in grocery stores. Choice steaks are healthy steaks and are fresher. Select steaks maybe edible but they are not seen in grocery stores and it tastes like dog food.

Who would have thought that there are factors to consider when buying steak? I may not consume steak, but for those who do, it's better to be picky when devouring meat. You will get your money's worth if you just know what to buy.
