This was written March 15, 2012. What is sunbathing? Is it to take a bath in the sun? Sunbathing-- To expose the body to the sun. People have been doing this for millions of years. The mind is like a parachute. It works best when it is open. If you are pale and fly down to the equator and spend all day in the sun, get 3rd degree burns and die, will you look good? I don't think so. Sunbathing makes you look and feel good. Since when is something that makes you look and feel good, bad your health? The yellow sun is the source of all of Superman's super power. This is not a short article but if you read it, you will see that sunlight is crucial to your health.
Latest news 2014: Scientists Blow the Lid on Cancer & Sunscreen Myth.
According to a June 2014 article featured in The Independent (UK), a major study conducted by researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Sweden found that women who avoid sunbathing during the summer are twice as likely to die as those who sunbathe every day.
The epidemiological study followed 30,000 women for over 20 years and “showed that mortality was about double in women who avoided sun exposure compared to the highest exposure group.”

Look and Feel Better with Sunbathing
I used to drive a cab at night on the weekends. So at 5:00 PM the day driver would pick me up up and drive himself home. Then I would drive until 5:00 AM and then I would pick him up and drive myself home. I had many nice experiences driving a cab. The day driver knew a great deal about natural health just like me and we would exchange ideas about what we knew.
Once he picked me up and said that I looked incredible. He wanted to know what I did to make myself glow and shine like I did. I was surprised that he did not know. I had sunbathed for 2 hours earlier that day. Harvey and Marilyn Diamond wrote a best selling book on health called Fit for Life. Marilyn says that when she first met Harvey, she was attracted to him since he had a deep and dark tan.
Muscle Beach was a place in California where people would do gymnastics, acrobatics and bodybuilding. Arnold Schwarzenegger used to train on that beach. Sunbathing Creates More Testosterone
A BBC article, Sunbathing ups men's testosterone, says:
A study in Clinical Endocrinology journal of 2,299 men found those with enough of the vitamin [D] had more of the male sex hormone than those with less.
The researchers from the Medical University of Graz, Austria, found men with at least 30 nanograms of vitamin D per millilitre of blood had much more testosterone circulating than those lacking in vitamin D.
This helps hair to grow faster. It also helps men and women to lose excess fat and gain muscle. In today's society many older men are suffering from a lack of testosterone that they call the male menopause like it is something natural. Dr. Oz recently encouraged his television viewers to sit out in the sun for 15 minutes a day without sunscreen in order receive one of the benefits of sun exposure - a daily dose of Vitamin D.

1. The vitamin D from sunlight is talked about below with links to articles on vitamin D.
2. Sunlight helps your body to produce more of the hormones "serotonin, endorphins, and melatonin in your brain. Endorphins and serotonin are brain chemicals linked with feeling good and at ease. And melatonin is a nocturnal brain chemical that allows you to enter into sleep-mode more quickly at bedtime."
3. It increases your white blood cell count enhancing your immunity and increases your red blood cell count so your blood can carry more oxygen. Sounds good to me!
4. The sunlight contains UV light that kills dangerous substances on your skin like viruses, bacteria, molds, yeast and fungi.
5. "Moderate sunlight has been shown to help clear up some cases of acne, psoriasis, and eczema."
Here is an article from Mail Online (dailymail.co.uk) called Why the Sun is Good for You. It says:
There is quite a body of evidence that suggests sunlight protects us against several conditions, including depression, heart disease and - believe it or not - some cancers.
Studies show that a 10 per cent reduction in sunlight exposure leads to an increased incidence of breast cancer of between 6 per cent and 10 per cent, and a 7 per cent to 12 per cent increase in colon cancer cases.
Sunbathing Protects You From Sunburn
When you sunbathe, you can control how long you stay in the sunlight for. Sunbathing darkens your skin protecting you from sunburn. You can keep sunbathing until you are at a point where if you have to be out in the sun for hours, you will be OK. Some people will tell me that they are too pale to sunbathe. So I tell them to slowly increase the time.
For example the first week spend everyday out in the sun for 1 minute on both front and back. Then after 1 week of doing that then increase it to 2 minutes on each side everyday for a week. Then spend 3 minutes on front and back side everyday for a week. Then it increase is to 4 minutes a day on front and back. Now this is an exaggeration to make a point!
Now when you are doing bodybuilding how long do you work a muscle. You work it long enough to help it grow but not too much so it is overworked. So with sunbathing you can stay out long enough, but not too long. On the video below with Dr Oz he explains that the intensity of the sun has determined how dark someones's skin is.
Sunbathing Relaxes You and Reduces Stress
I saw a post about a miracle way to reduce stress. It was by a Zen Buddhist with a quote by an expert meditator. It said to be in the present by taking a deep breath and being aware of what is going on around you. i commented that if that is all it takes then someone would not need to become a Buddhist or meditate enough to be a master. So I tried to think of things that can help fight stress.
Lying in the sun with your eyes closed is very relaxing. All over the world you have rich people just lying on a beach and relaxing. Of course if it is too hot or too humid, that may not be the case. It is a time that you do not need to do anything or think about anything yet something powerful is happening in your body. Some experts believe that the eyelids do let through a certain wavelength of energy that is beneficial to the pineal gland that some call the third eye.
Sunbathing and Detoxification
People sit in saunas (hot rooms) to sweat a lot that detoxifies the body. There are also expensive infrared saunas that are supposed to be even better than regular saunas. But the idea for the infrared sauna comes from sunlight. When the temperature is 90 degrees F (always measured in the shade), it is likely to be 140 F in the sun.
There are 4 excretory organs (an organ that separates waste substances from the blood and discharges them). They are the lungs, kidneys, liver and skin. The skin is the largest of the excretory organs. When you sunbathe, you sweat a lot and that helps the skin to get rid of more toxins.
Actually I know a great deal about detoxification. Even though I never took drugs (except medications) I did the Scientology Purification Rundown. It is supposed to get rid of drugs (including medications) and other toxins like insecticides, preservatives and more from the body. People have reported re-living drug experiences while doing it.
The way that it is done, is you take vitamins and exercise for 20 minutes to circulate them. Then you sit in a sauna that is 140 F for 4 hours, taking breaks when you need them. you do this everyday for 2 or 3 weeks. I read that they gave these free to fire and police officials that were exposed to a lot of toxins while cleaning up the 9-11 area. The Wikipedia website above says:
The Purification Rundown is promoted as having physical and mental benefits such as lowering cholesterol, relieving pain, and improving memory. Scientology's promotional materials claim it can boost IQ by up to 15 points. Scientologists are strongly encouraged to take part in the program as a necessary step in their spiritual progress. Scientology promotes the Rundown to the public as a "detoxification" program, while it also works with allegedly non-religious but Scientology-affiliated groups such as Narconon to offer this program as a treatment for addiction and high levels of stress. Conditions that are said by Scientologists to respond to the program include cancer, AIDS, heart problems, kidney failure, liver disease and obesity.
Wikipedia has another page about the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project. It says:
The New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project was founded in New York City in 2003 with the purpose of treating rescue workers for toxins inhaled from the smoke of the September 11 attacks. The project's co-founder and top fundraiser is the actor and Scientologist Tom Cruise. It uses the Purification Rundown, a "detoxification" program invented by L. Ron Hubbard as part of Scientology's Bridge to Total Freedom.
There are many naturopathic physicians that believe that almost all health problems come from too many toxins in the body called toxemia. Unlike all of the above, sunbathing is the cheapest one costing only 50 cents an hour. I am kidding. Sunbathing is free!
Around 1900 there was Arnold Ehret who had a disease that the doctors could not cure. He cured it with fasting and experimented with diet and found that the healthiest diet was a diet of fruit, leafy greens and non-starch vegetables. He called his diet the mucusless diet and wrote a book about it.
After he cured he was still experimenting with diet and found that the less toxins in the body, the more energy someone had and they needed less food. He went to a tropical island and fasted for 42 days (only water and nothing else). Also he sunbathed 2 to 3 hours a day around noon. He created a fasting center in Switzerland and helped many people. Conclusion: Vitamin D and Damage from Sunbathing
Michael Holick M.D. wrote one of the recent books on vitamin D that is listed on the vitamin D articles below. He is a professor of medicine, physiology and biophysics at Boston University Medical School. He has received awards in dermatology even though 7 years ago he was fired from the dermatology department there (Boston U) for writing a book on UV (ultraviolet light) and vitamin D called The UV Advantage. He says that sunlight creates co-factors that help the vitamin D to work better so it is best to get vitamin D from sunlight. He has been treating people and zoo animals with vitamin D for over 40 years.
Pretty much all the information about sunbathing being bad for you is a scam and myth. There is a huge amount of information on this. Now say that something caused most of the ozone layer to be destroyed. Would this eliminate or lower your need for sunlight or vitamin D? No! You would just sunbathe less.
There are no good food sources of vitamin D. The body cannot make vitamins so you need to get them from food. But vitamin D is not a vitamin! it is a steroid hormone. Now cod liver oil has a lot of vitamin D in it. But it is not a good source of vitamin D. It has a great deal of vitamin A and that competes with the absorption of vitamin D. Now they put vitamin D in food but it is better to just buy the vitamin itself. It is very cheap.
It is rare but you can get too much vitamin D from supplements. But you cannot get too much vitamin D from sunlight. It is stored in the inactive form until you need more. This means that if you get more than enough vitamin D from the sun, then you will always have the perfect amount of vitamin D in your blood since your body chooses the amount. When it comes to supplements, the doctors suggest that you get tested for the amount of vitamin D in the blood and get tested again if you need to make sure that you have enough. Supplements are made by people. Years ago a milk company was putting huge amounts of vitamin D in the milk and one elder woman did die from too much vitamin D. A guy bought vitamin D supplements and got an overdose and had the vitamin D supplement tested. Each capsule had one million IU of vitamin D.
There is a woman on Youtube that cannot afford a doctor or a lab test. She did not mention the amount but it sounded like she was not taking too much vitamin D. But she was listing all the problems she was having from taking this supplement and it sounded like the supplement manufacturer accidentally mixed some toxic substances with this supplement.
Getting enough vitamin D can greatly help your cardiovascular health, immune system and help you avoid many disease. Moores Cancer Center proposes that cancer is a vitamin D deficiency. Doctor of Public Health, Cedric Garland says that enough (lifeguard levels) of vitamin D will virtually eradicate breast cancer!
As far as the huge amount of information on how sunlight causing skin cancer is a myth, here is a small amount. One study showed that lifeguards in Australia had the lowest amounts of skin cancer. A study in England showed that the highest rate of skin cancer was among office workers that rarely got out in the sun. A great deal of skin caner is on skin that is never exposed to the sun. This November 22, 2011 blog post is Another study confirms the sunscreen deception. It tells how as more sunscreen is being used, melanoma keeps increasing. It says:
It is undeniable that sunscreen use has profoundly increased in the past few decades, and in spite of that increase, the incidence of melanoma (CMM) continues to climb in the US. A new report, actually a clinical review in the Journal or the American Board of Family Practice, comes to the following conclusions:
1. “Despite the availability and promotion of sunscreen for decades, the incidence of CMM continues to increase in the U.S. at a rate of 3% per year.”
2. There currently is little evidence that sunscreens are protective against CMM.
3. A number of studies suggest that the use of sunscreen does not significantly decrease the risk CMM, and may actually increase the risk of both CMM and sunburns.
Here is a National Library of Medicine article called Benefits of Sunlight: A Bright Spot for Human Health. It says:
However, excessive UVR exposure accounts for only 0.1% of the total global burden of disease in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), according to the 2006 World Health Organization (WHO) report The Global Burden of Disease Due to Ultraviolet Radiation . DALYs measure how much a person’s expectancy of healthy life is reduced by premature death or disability caused by disease.
In contrast, the same WHO report noted that a markedly larger annual disease burden of 3.3 billion DALYs worldwide might result from very low levels of UVR exposure.
This webpage above explains that there is the terrible bone disease that children get called rickets. It is cured by vitamin D since it is caused by a vitamin D deficiency. But in the late 1800s they had not discovered vitamin D yet (it was discovered in 1922). By the late 1800s, approximately 90% of all children living in industrialized Europe and North America had some degree of rickets. "Doctors throughout Europe and North America began promoting whole-body sun-bathing to help prevent rickets."

Go here to check your UV index now or for tomorrow. Put in your location at the top and then you get a chart of the weather in your area. At the bottom of the chart click on hourly. Then at the bottom of the chart, click on UV index. Then you can see the UV index every hour. It runs from 0 to 11. It must be above 3 to get vitamin D. The higher it is the less time you need to get the same amount of vitamin D. Like mentioned above, get more than you need so your blood will have the perfect amount of vitamin D in it all the time.
