The Meaning Of Success and How To Achieve it

Updated on July 24, 2015

Good News and Bad News

First of, there is some good news and bad news. The good news is you are already successful, the bad news is you don't realize it. The reason why you do not realize it is because you do not acknowledge it. The reason you do not want to acknowledge it is because you have the wrong idea of success in your mind, and your current success does not match that idea of success that you have in your mind. So I would like to begin by bursting the myth that our society has drilled into your mind about what success means.

What is Success?

The Dictionary defines success as such: the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors; the accomplishment of one's goals. What we do not realize is that we are always successful in reaching our goals. Problem is we do not realize what goals we have set for ourselves. Your goals can be anything, it can be making money and be a billionaire or it can be doing a Breaking Bad marathon. So a person who has made money and become a billionaire is just as successful as the person who has completed the whole 5 seasons of Breaking Bad at one go because as the dictionary said that success is "the accomplishment of one's goals."

The problem is our society has a different definition and a very wrong definition of success. The society defines success as this:

This is why many of us are miserable and feel useless even though we reach our goals. Our goal is to finish the whole 5 seasons of breaking bad at one go. But society tells us "what are you doing you lazy bum! get up and go to work!" why? That is not my goal. My goal is to finish all the seasons of Breaking Bad, not go to work. You should not feel bad about not going according to the norms set by society.

We won't feel bad if we realize that we are successful.

Those Who Can Will Find A Way, Those Who Can't Will Find Excuses.

Many of us feel that our goal SHOULD BE to work and make money. So because of this they go to work and earn a living, but they are not happy, they will always find excuses, they will start saying how their boss is rude, how their work is very tedious.

Truth is, those who wants to work will work, those who don't won't. We should know what we want, and when we do we should not feel bad or ashamed about it. If staring at the wall for 5 hours while making popping noises with your mouth is what you want to do so be it. Do it. It is what you want to do.

Show Me The Money!

No, I won't show you the money, this is not about money. I am not here to give you tips on how to be rich. I am giving you tips to stop making yourself feel bad about what you are currently doing.

The reason why you feel bad is because you don't know what you want. It is ok. No one knows. Not even the person who is driving a Mercedes and living in a mansion. Right now you are sitting and reading comic books but in the back of your mind you are thinking "what am I doing I am wasting my time, I should be more productive." But what you are actually doing is just fulfilling a need which you do not understand yet, just go with the flow.

Yes money is important, but you need to understand money means nothing if you are miserable.

"You have to Motivate Yourself With Challenges. That's How You Know You Are Still Alive."-Jerry Seinfeld

Glimpse Of Truth About Making Money

Well before someone starts labeling me as some hippie I might as well talk a little truth about money making. Yes there are people who are passionate about making money, they will fight tooth and nail to get it. And chances are they will. But what about you? Yes you, the one sitting on the sofa and eating a whole tub of Ben and Jerry's.

The truth of the matter is some people won't decide to make money or a living until they have a gun to their head, figuratively speaking. A person who has a huge loan to pay will work tirelessly and look for money, if that loan didn't exist he probably wouldn't work with such tenacity and passion.

A Conscious Effort To Set Goals

Some people may ask "so should I just do what I feel like doing and not feel bad because I am successful?" Yes and you need to be conscious about it, make a conscious effort. Never go on autopilot. The more conscious we are, the more conscious we get of our goals in life.

At first we may start to whistle or stare at the wall while we are sitting doing nothing. Do not feel bad if you catch yourself sitting idle. As we start practicing and exercising our consciousness we will be more aware of our goals, and the more action we take towards our goals the stronger our consciousness becomes. Perhaps we will start making even bigger goals, goals that involve making more money and earning a living, or setting a goal of getting in shape. Either way the success and failure of reaching these goals are in our hands.

The Most Overlooked Reason of Our Failures

How can we not talk about failures when discussing success. So you have made a conscious effort to set a goal. You have decided that starting from tomorrow you will get up in the morning at 6am and start jogging to get in shape. Congrats!

But before you know it you failed! why? The main reason people very often overlook when setting a goal is their routine. Always ask yourself this one question when you set a goal "what am I willing to give up in my life to reach this goal?"

So you want to start jogging in the morning and get in shape. Great. So that means you will have to give up 2 hours of sleep. To that you will reply "ok so I will sleep 2 hours earlier than what I used to." Are you sure, whatever you like to do in the last 2 hours before you normally sleep, you have to give that up. Whether it is watching your favorite show, or having some family time, you have to give that up because you want to sleep earlier. Are you willing to give it up?

Rich or poor, every one is given the same 24 hours a day. There is no extra hours that we can buy from the market. So we need to give up something in order to gain something. What are you willing to give up?

Conclusion

A Successful person is one who can reach his goals. His goals can be an unconscious choice of staring at the ceiling for 5 hours doing nothing. Or making a conscious effort of setting a goal more meaningful and reaching it. Both are successful. The difference is the state of consciousness.
