Ozone Therapy and Treatment:The New Fountain of Youth
The quest for the fountain of youth, a magical cure all against aging, disease and death, has been an age old quest with little to no success. People, throughout history, have experimented with an almost endless variety of treatments to keep themselves young. This seeking to stay young still continues to this day. Plastic surgery, various implants, Botox as well as an almost endless list of procedures have become commonly used to keep the look of youth, but this youth is only skin deep. What can one do to defeat aging under the skin? Is there a way to win the battle with disease or at least increase our defenses, while making us feel younger and healthier? Maybe there is something that has been kept from public knowledge, something somewhat controversial, that has been proven to be perhaps a little too effective and a little too inexpensive. There couldn’t be, could there? There is and it is certainly not new or unknown. It is Ozone Therapy and it is not yet another alternative medicine scam. Read on and see for yourself.
What is Ozone and Ozone Therapy?
Ozone, itself is actually merely oxygen with one slight difference. The Oxygen that we breathe is made up of two Oxygen atoms (O2) while Ozone is made up of three Oxygen atoms (O3). Ozone is most commonly known for protecting the earth from Ultraviolet rays from the sun. This ozone was created when normal oxygen, which is lighter than air, raises high into the atmosphere. There it reacts with sunlight to become the blue gas, Ozone, giving the sky its color. Ozone is also created naturally during thunderstorms by lightning charging the air causing normal Oxygen to form Ozone. Medical Ozone is created in a similar way, by passing a high electrical charge through pure Oxygen. This is really the only similarity between the two. This is important to consider because Atmospheric Ozone, which is considered dangerous, is not the same as Medical Ozone for Atmospheric Ozone contains other chemicals while Medical Ozone is pure and while still dangerous to breathe, it is perfectly safe for other uses.
Medically, Ozone has to be found to have the following effects:
- Ozone inactivates viruses, bacteria, and Fungi. Most bacteria and viruses are sealed with a layer of fat. When ozone enters the blood stream, it quickly oxidizes any fats it comes into contact with, including the cell walls of most bacteria and viruses, leaving the body’s cells safe as they are sealed with enzymes rather than fats. In Fungi, ozone inhibits cell growth at certain stages. For some viruses, ozone prevents their spread by not allowing them contact with other cells.
- Ozone prevents red blood cells from clumping together as well as making them more flexible, allowing them to fit into smaller capillaries. It also thins the blood and oxidizes plaque, causing the blood to flow much easier.
- Ozone stimulates the body’s metabolism by flooding the body with Oxygen enabling the body to better use sugar.
- Ozone stimulates the immune system. When Ozone enters the blood stream it causes the white blood cells to increase their production of enzymes which they use to destroy viruses as well as some cancers.
- Ozone readily oxidizes any toxins present in the body allowing them to be properly removed.
- Ozone stimulates a number of enzymes, which aid the heart and circulatory system healthy.
- Ozone improves brain functions and memory. No part of the body is more reliant on being kept with enough Oxygen than the Brain. The brain can only survive nine minutes without Oxygen. Any time, however, can cause damage to the brain, which can be permanent. When Ozone is used, the entire body is flooded with Oxygen, which can help with areas of the brain that may have not received enough Oxygen in the past.
- Ozone kills cancer cells. Ozone stimulates the immune system to produce enzymes which destroy cancer cells as well as produces peroxides in the blood which also destroys cancer cells.
A brief history
The use of Ozone in medicine is nothing new. In 1885, the Florida Medical Association published "Ozone" by Dr. Charles J. Kenworth, MD, detailing the use of ozone for therapeutic purposes. But it wasn’t until the First World War that Ozone was used on a major level. German Doctors used it to treat wounds, gangrene and the effects of poison gas.
From 1953 onward, German doctor Hans Wolff used ozone in his practice, writing the book "Medical Ozone," and training many doctors in ozone therapy.
In 1957, Dr. J. Hansler patented an ozone generator which has formed the basis of the German expansion of ozone therapy over the last 35 years.
In 1961, Hans Wolff introduced the techniques of major and minor autohemotherapy.
In 1977, Dr. Renate Viebahn provided a technical overview of ozone action in the body.
In 1979, Dr. George Freibott began treating his first AIDS patient with ozone, and in 1980, Dr. Horst Kief also reported success treating AIDS with ozone.
In 1987, Dr. Rilling and Dr. Viebahn published "The Use of Ozone in Medicine," the standard text on the subject.
In 1990, the Cubans reported on their success in treating glaucoma, conjunctivitis and retinitis pigmentosa with ozone.
Ozone winning the battle against Cancer and AIDS:
Dr. Otto Warburg theorized that cancer cells are can only survive without Oxygen. The research behind this theory won him a Nobel Prize in 1931. He found that cancer exists only in the absence of Oxygen and normal cells can become cancerous if they cannot receive enough Oxygen to survive. It has been found since that with the increased Oxygenation of the blood through Ozone treatments as well as Ozone’s jump-starting of the body’s immune system has the ability to kill cancer cells. It can actually dissolve tumors and other cancer cells. When used with chemotherapy, the side effects of the chemotherapy are lessened i.e. hair loss, nausea and general weakness.
The most feared disease on the planet may possibly be cured by Ozone Therapy. It has been found that the AIDS virus cannot live in the presence of Oxygen. Although, very few clinical studies have been performed, doctors, who are practicing Ozone Therapy, have seen good results. The AIDS virus, itself, has been seen to be killed as well as other diseases that are associated with AIDS. Ozone is giving much needed hope to those who before were certain to die.
Aside from its use for Cancer and AIDS, Ozone Therapy is being used for a large number of other diseases and conditions. It may not be a magic pill, but the successes and most importantly the hope that Ozone gives to treat a wide variety of ailments is magical in itself. I am sure that every one of us knows someone that could benefit from Ozone. Here is a list of what Ozone is used for:
Heart and Blood Vessel Diseases
Peripheral vascular disease (poor circulation)
Cerebral vascular disease (stroke and memory loss)
Cardiovascular disease (heart disease)
Coronary spasm (angina)
Cardiac arrhythmias (irregular heartbeat)
Gangrene (of fingers and toes)
Raynaud's disease ("white finger")
Temporal arteritis (inflammation of the temporal artery)
Vascular and cluster headaches
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Bronchiectasis (dilatation of bronchus or bronchi)
Pneumocystis carinii (PCP or AIDS-related pneumonia)
Herpes zoster (shingles)
Herpes simplex (fever blister)
Systemic chronic candidiasis (candida)
Epstein-Barr virus (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome)
Acute and chronic viral infections
Chronic unresponsive bacterial infections
Diabetes mellitus Type II
Chronic pain syndromes (due to multiple causes)
Pain of metastatic carcinoma
Cancers of the blood and lymph nodes 4
How Ozone Therapy is applied?
Ozone is used therapeutically in the following ways:
This procedure is performed only by trained professionals, usually only in a clinic setting. Approximately 200cc of the patient’s blood is withdrawn into an evacuated bottle. The bottle is then hung upside down, and ozone gas (the same volume as the blood withdrawn) is infused into the bottle, usually at a concentration of 40ug/ml. The blood is then given back to the patient, much like a transfusion.
In this procedure the trained professional constantly monitors the patient, and ensures the purity of the ozone gas coming from the ozone generator, and the sterility of all equipment used. For the trained professional, this ozone therapy treatment is actually quite easy, and very safe for the patient.
Major Autohemotherapy is the preferred method of many practitioners, and it is used in well over 150 diseases. In Germany, even the ambulances are equipped with ozone generators; if ozone is administered within 24 hours of a stroke, 95% of patients suffer no permanent paralysis.
Rectal Insufflation is "95% as effective as Major Autohemotherapy" (Renate Viebahn). This method is used by many physicians in their clinics and by those at home as well.
The ozone gas (usually at a concentration between 20ug/ml - 35ug/ml, and a flow rate of 1/8 liter per minute) is infused rectally using a catheter. The procedure is usually performed following a bowel movement or a colonic treatment in order to ensure the colon is relatively free of fecal matter. The ozone enters the lower intestine, is held for at least 30 minutes, and over this period it is absorbed into the system.
This type of ozone therapy treatment is performed at initially at high concentrations and gradually lowered as treatments continue for such problems as colitis, bacterial infections, or bleeding. This ozone therapy treatment is performed using the above guidelines (lower in concentration) if the desired effects are the immune modulation and other "system wide" effects typically desired of Ozone Therapy.
"Bagging" with ozone refers to the method of isolating a body part by surrounding it with a bag (such as hand, arm, leg, foot, torso, pelvis, but NEVER head), and introducing ozone. This can be used to treat gangrene, diabetic foot ulcers, bed sores, burns, any wounds that are infected or slow healing, or those that refuse to heal. This method is not intended to generate an immune modulating effect on the individual as in the methods above.
The ozone therapy bag is placed around or over the affected area, the output tube from the ozone generator placed through the top of the bag, and the top sealed as effectively as possible. Ozone at the desired concentration must first be humidified (simply bubbled through water) and then enters the bag; the ozone generator constantly runs during this treatment. Treatment times vary depending on the type of wounds being treated but typically range from 10 - 30 minutes. As leaking will occur from the bag it is suggested that this process occurs in a well-ventilated area. In European medical clinics, a specially designed bag is used to ensure no leaking occurs, and after treatment the ozone is sucked from the bag by a vacuum pump so neither the patient, nor the attendant ever breathes in the ozone.
Is Ozone dangerous, Should I worry?
When administered in prescribed amounts by a qualified practitioner, the chances of experiencing adverse reactions to Ozone therapy is extremely small. For example, a German study on 384,775 patients evaluating the adverse side effects of over five million medically-administered ozone treatments found that the rate of adverse side effects was only 0.0007 per application. This figure is far lower than any other type of medical therapy.
It has been estimated that over ten million people (primarily in Germany, Russia and Cuba) have been given bio-oxidative therapies over the past seventy years to treat over fifty different diseases. To put this in perspective, in the US alone over 17% of all emergency room visits are due to side effects from medication and 50% of those are just from painkillers. Ozone is probably one of the safest medical procedures known.
I’m not sick, so I don’t need it then, right?
While it is true, ozone is mostly used as a therapy for sickness, Ozone is also a preventative measure. The boost in the body’s immune system and all around body cleansing is a benefit to everyone. It can keep us feeling younger since it keeps us healthy and rejuvenates from the inside out.
