The Power of a Single Thought

You are What You Think

There is a never ending stream of thoughts flowing through your conscious and subconscious mind every minute of every day. These thoughts affect your outlook on life, your mood, and your physiology. The output of this thought stream is the result of your lifetime of learning and assimilating every single thing that has ever been recorded by your brain.

From the day you are born, and some studies indicate that even from within the womb, the human brain records every single detail and impression that ever made its way from one of the five senses into the memory centers of the brain.

I call the sum of these recorded impressions, your mental conditioning. The human brain is like an incredibly efficient, super high resolution video recorder. Except instead of just video, every sight, sound, taste, smell, physical sensation, emotion, dream, and internal mental dialogue is indelibly recorded into the memory centers of your brain.

This lifetime of mental conditioning manifests itself as a stream of thoughts in your conscious mind. That conditioning affects the variety, mood, and types of thoughts that you have. Different stimuli and internal dialogue are recorded by the brain and can have positive, neutral, or negative aspects. You could say that the sum of this recorded information is an incredibly complex combination of all three.

Take for example the advertisements you see around you as you browse the internet. Your brain has learned to filter out most of them from your main stream of awareness, because after a while you get used to it, and the human brain is very good at sorting through data and ignoring what it believes is not necessary to pay attention to.

However, even though you don't really notice the ads, because your brain is continuously automatically filtering information for you expertly, all of those advertisements are still being recorded in exactingly perfect detail, right down to every last period, comma and pixel that your eyes can make out.

An advertisement might read "make money easily," subconsciously that might actually end up being a positive internal dialogue prompter. More likely, the case is that the ads you are inadvertently recording from watching TV and browsing the Internet are subtly programming your mind in a way that you would not approve of if you had a conscious choice in the matter.

I feel that just having an awareness of this subtle mind control type programming helps combat its effects greatly, that is one reason why I mention it.

Overcoming Negative Conditioning

Whether you are consciously aware of it or not, your mind and your very outlook on life have been shaped and molded by the environment and people you have been exposed to since the day your brain was able to start recording information.

Normal events in everyone's life can turn into negative prompters that condition the mind into a way of thinking that is negative and un-productive to the goals you may wish to achieve on a more conscious level.

Negative conditioning can be buried deep in your mind underneath countless layers of memories, thoughts and emotion. Hypnotherapy is a technique that can be used to explore this negative conditioning and try to remove those prompters that hold you back from being successful, healthy and happy.

Some people are more susceptible to hypno-therapeutic suggestion than others. Personally I have not had much success with hypnotic therapies, I seem to be one of the people who are not very susceptible to hypnotic suggestion.

I like to think of the human mind as an incredibly delicate and complex computer, and I firmly believe that it is possible to re-program this computer we call the human mind, and if not permanently remove, at least significantly subdue these negative influences in your life.

Many years of research, and attempts to overcome my own negative conditioning have taught me some techniques that I believe can help anyone who wishes to reprogram their own minds into a more positive outlook. Learning the habits of positive thinking can have many rewards, foremost of which is simply a more easy going attitude towards life and a more positive influence on the people around you.

When you are trying to heal from an illness, or make money working from home, or perhaps you are an internet entrepreneur working to succeed in a very competitive market, there can be no room for negative thoughts. Correcting your stream of thoughts on a minute by minute basis towards the positive can be like a key unlocking the door to achieving your dream of wealth, abundance, success, good health, more friends, whatever your goal is.

Thoughts and The Secret Law of Attraction

Many people talk about The Secret Law of Attraction. It is called The Secret, because for years, the idea that thought vibrations could attract similar vibrations or energy back to you, was kept secret so that the power of attracting wealth, success and abundance could be controlled by the few elite societies and individuals who knew of these principles.

It did not used to be a secret, thousands of years ago, ancient religious texts including the bible and many others, mentioned repeatedly the idea that what you do and what you think will come back to you over and over again. Karma is just one example that stands out in my mind.

Each thought is a vibration. Every thought vibration that you create, travels out into the universe in an expanding globe from the point of origin. The speed of travel of this vibration is debatable, I believe that the speed of travel of a thought has no limit.

How long does it take you to imagine that you are on the moon. You can be there instantly in your mind. Now did the thought actually travel to the moon when you did that? Perhaps, I cannot really say for certain either way. If you believe that each human being has a soul, and that the soul can travel for instance, astrally, what would the speed limitation of an astral traveling consciousness be? Lets just call it incredibly fast for the sake of argument.

Your thoughts create vibrations of energy which travel outwards from your mind at incredibly fast speeds and pass through and connect with similar energies, attracting those energies back to yourself. This is one of the reasons why correcting your thought stream into a more positive outlook is so beneficial to healing, wealth, success and anything else you wish to achieve.

Physiological Effects of Thoughts

Even if you do not believe in The Secret, or the attractive power of thought vibrations, I would like to point out another way to look at the benefits of positive thinking.

Consider that even if a thought is only in your physical brain, and goes no further than that, there are a multitude of physiological effects that can happen inside your body depending on the thoughts you entertain.

Have you ever had your heart broken? It is all in your mind, yet it can manifest as physical pain in your gut, you may cry, tears flow down your face, your nose gets congested, all physical symptoms resulting from the despair and loss streaming through your consciousness. I don't want to delve into those type of situations too deeply, as the intent of this article is to foster positive thought processes. There are many examples of positive and negative physical manifestations that can be brought on merely from the thoughts you decide to entertain.

Conversely, physical sensations can also affect the thoughts that you are having, it's like a two way road. If you get stung by a bee for example, its easy to see where your thoughts are going to try to go. If your friend massages your shoulders, negative thoughts tend to drain away.

Here is something to try, especially if you are depressed, or find yourself having a lot of negative thoughts, or dealing with a difficult situation: SMILE! A great big smile, make sure that when you smile, you are smiling with your eyes as well as your mouth, a true smile uses most of your face muscles. Make it a really good one, even if you don't feel like smiling, just fake it and make it the best you can, but you have to include the eyes. Do that for about 5 - 10 minutes if you can, I guarantee it will improve your mood. :-)

Healing and Attracting Wealth with Thoughts

When you desire to bring yourself to a higher level, spiritually, financially, physically, you absolutely must eliminate negative thinking from your mind. I don't even like to use negative words in this text, but if I only used positive words, it would be very difficult to make my point.

There are many tools that can be used to help reprogram the stream of thoughts that occur in your mind, I want to share one really effective technique with you now.

Get into the habit of monitoring your thoughts, pay attention to the kinds of thoughts you are having and correct them on a minute by minute basis if you have to. When you find yourself entertaining negative ideas or emotions, gently correct yourself by mentally or verbally saying what I call a Power Thought. Saying it out loud might be a little embarrassing if you are surrounded by co-workers.

A Power Thought is a single idea that establishes or reinforces a positive mental attitude. Many power thoughts can be expressed as single words, I try to use the power thought that exactly cancels out the negative when possible. If I was feeling sad, I would mentally repeat the word "happiness" and that conjures up positive images in my mind. I have found that the word "happy" doesn't seem to invoke as much positive imagery, at least for me, as "Happiness" does.

Examples of Power thoughts: Love, Wealth, Success, Abundance, Prosperity, Heal, Happiness, Vibrant Health and Energy. There can be many, many more, these are just the ones I use in my main arsenal against negative thinking. Make up your own, anything that conjures positive ideas, you will find ones that work the best for your situation.

Attracting Wealth and Abundance:

Just saying the word "Wealth" immediately establishes a set of images and ideas in your mind, which may vary depending on your background. When I repeat the word "wealth" it starts a whole pattern of what I consider to be positive thoughts in my brain, I envision a brand new sailboat, a Lazy Daze Class C RV with me and my wife driving in it, an amazing home with an ocean view, lots of cash, a winning lottery ticket, an online making money strategy that rakes in residual income while I sleep, the list goes on.

Healing:

The word "Heal" is very powerful. When you are trying to recover from physical illness, saying the word heal with love to your body or to the specific part of your body that needs it, directly calls upon your own natural healing abilities, and sets up the healing vibration in your mind.

A very powerful healing technique, at least me and Three Thousand years of Chinese medicine thinks so, is to rub your hands together for a few seconds, which primes the Chi, and then place your hands on the person or physical area that needs healing or soothing, then repeat the word "Heal" with meaning and positive intent, sending the healing energy down through your hands mentally visualizing the healing process taking place, also very important is to visualize the person or area "Fully Healed." You could use that as a power thought, you would mentally repeat "Fully Healed," visualizing, attracting and manifesting the end result of your desire to be heal someone or be healed yourself.

Making positive thoughts a habit:

When you sense a negative thought coming on, just repeat a word or phrase that induces a Power Thought that expresses your positive intention, and you will find that the thoughts you have fall more into line with the goals you wish to achieve. Continually monitoring and correcting becomes habitual after a time and it gets easier with practice.

You will find that certain words/thoughts will have more power for you, and some may not work at all, or actually be detrimental. For example some people might have deep negative conditioning against wealth and prosperity and thoughts about those things may conjure up less than optimal imagery for a positive state of mind. You will know it if its a good thought for you, expressing the right power thought should immediately brighten your outlook.

This is so well written, and I know there is a lot to the power of positive thinking. I've successfully used creative visualization in the past too. Where it all bogs down for me is reality testing. I spent eight years in corporate call centers working the phones, trying to be excellent so I could get a better position. I survived the way you explain things here. No negative thoughts, not even a peep. But the work was brutal and the negativity I absorbed on a daily basis was unrelenting. That was my job, to absorb and transform someone else's negativity.

I got very good at it, but after five years I started to get sick. My 'stats' (performance statistics) were stellar, my attitude was positive, but my body was screaming, "Get me OUTTA here!!!!" I ignored its negative messages. How could I survive in that environment if I allowed that into my head? It took me almost three more years to realize I had to leave. The year I left I ended up in the hospital. By that time, I was just this cesspool of misery and negativity. It was like all of sudden I just 'snapped out of it' and every reasonable reaction I'd stuffed for all those years came flooding in and swamped me.

So I still do use these techniques, but I don't call a turd chocolate truffle anymore to put a positive spin on it. This is one of the best hubs I've read on this topic though, thank you. As nonsense-free as any I've seen. :)

Few people realise the effect that the steady drip drip drip of the media has on our brains and on our behaviour, so it's good to read a hub that recognises that fact, then gets on with the business of addressing what we can do about it. I've read the Secret, and seen the film, and I understand the concept behind it, but relentless positivity can be almost as draining as the opposite. Still, I keep trying!

I had not connected the power of Ganesha as remover of obstacles and the Western version: The Secret until just now. Isn't it interesting how different cultures approach the same desire in such a different way? Very well done.
