The Truth About The Causes of ADD and ADHD

Betty Hooper May Be Right

The Lancet published a research paper conerend with ADHD and diet. It appears what you ear may really play a part in the diagnosis of ADHD or not.

Dr. Lidy Pelsser confirms Betty Hooper's affirmation that diet is key to changes in ADHD behavior. Dr Peisser from the Research Centre in the Netherlands claims environment and diet make all the difference.

Learn From A Nonagenarian

Mrs Betty Hooper impressed me by her words so much I had to let my friends on Hubpages listen to what she has to say. An elder, which stands for wisdom, researched this issue for us to help the next generation. The children today lack proper nutrition. With the proper care and nurturing, children simply would not have Attention Deficit Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Turning to drugs to solve all of our relationship problems means harming your children.

Betty says, "It is very sad." At age 90, this former special needs teacher provides a simple approach to helping children with this problem. Although ADD and ADHD have numerous causal factors, she encourages us to start by removing artificial foods and sweeteners from kid's diets, and creating a diet journal to make a huge difference in the lives of your children or grandchildren.

Watch the presentation of Mrs Hooper below filmed at the Whangarei Public Library February 2011. Her passion to help others and concern for children go beyond collecting data as an independent researcher who is not affiliated with any group. Well qualified to talk about this topic, as she is old enough to have witnessed a deterioration of children's behavior over the decades, she self-funded a research trip to Cuba in late-2005, in order to compare the diets and behaviors there, with those in New Zealand.

New York Media Campaign Equates Soda with Weight Gain and Fat

People hear the media message over and over again until they begin to believe it.

New York City health department sent the message that can of soda a day “can make you 10 pounds fatter a year.” Find out more of this story.

Mrs Hooper provides a disclaimer when she speaks, because she is not affiliated with any large corporation, association or group. Her sound independent research and her ability to illustrate through graphics makes a lively presentation.

Imminently qualified, through decades of classroom experience and witnessing the deterioration of children's ability to sit quietly and learn, she passionately explains her point of view. Mrs Hooper self funded a comparative study of children living in Cuba in late-2005 to those in New Zealand to compare children's diets and behaviors. She concludes that additives in Food Are the Primary Cause of ADHD. Betty has become a popular personality on talk shows and the lecture circuit in New Zealand. Don't we all wish for her energy, exuberance and faculty of mind as an nonagenarian?

She explains that the label ADHD, which is a fancy term for hyperactivity, was assigned by the American Psychiatric Association in the 1980′s, who followed a show of hands, created this new “disease,” which they stated was treatable, but not curable and attributable to brain dysfunction. Not listening to the medical stance, she encourages parents to make the links and connections between food, drinks and hyperactivity today.

You will have a chance to listen to her wisdom live on February 18, 2011. Ninety-one year old Betty Hooper, whose idea it was to start a chemtrail watch group in her region in Northland, New Zealand, will be a guest on the Vinny Eastwood radio show with Will Ryan, on February the 18th, from 12-2pm, (NZT). It will be well worth tuning in, as this is Betty’s first radio broadcast and she says she intends to cover a range of topics that have received a pitiful amount of attention in the mainstream media, including the dietary causes of ADD/ADHD, the great health benefits of drinking goats’ milk and chemtrails.

I have read you article with great interest, and as a mother of an ADHD child, I have to say, if the remedy to help such a disturbing condition was just to alter a child's diet, I would have done so many years ago. My son is now 23 and although still suffering from the same condition is a very bright and intelligent individual.

When we look back over generations of our family, we have realised that this disorder has followed not only downwards, but sidewards in our family for many years.

Our doctor has advised us that ADHD is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain and is nothing to do with bad parenting skills. Like homeopathy, like cures like, the drug ritalin helps ADHD sufferers to focus on tasks ahead. I objected to my son taking the drug, and spent many hours asking myself the question 'What if', but all I know is that his ability to survive not only the teachers but from being bullied, the ritalin made a great deal of difference. He was happier and found his school work less tiresome.

My son has had a very normal up-bringing, and as a chef previously, my knowledge of diet has been very good. We had all the usual allergy tests done, and he always in my company, ate healthily.

If you had been on the receiving end of all the people who insist you are a bad parent then you could appreciate how I feel. I am so fed up of both my son and I being seen as a dis-functional family. When in reality, nothing could be further than the truth.

Dear thebluestar ~ Thank you for telling your story and struggle with this disease that appears to run throughout your family. For some children today diet can play a big part, but for others, like your son, there are many more contributing factors. Homeopaths would call the emotional challenges and environmental bullying obstacles to cure. This indicates a need to assist the individual cope with these types of trauma and abuse. Your message shows how much you care and love your son and all that you have done to nurture him and help him grow up in a secure environment. Many blessings, Debby

ADD and ADHD aside, it's not difficult to see the behavioral and increased mental health issues in children, as well as the obesity epidemic. Diets in general have gone to the dogs (or McDonalds and Coke).

The latest product 5 (yes 5) is an increasingly popular chewing gum which in very very small print lists the ingredient phenylalanine. This is E951, or Aspartame. It's advertised as a sensory stimulant. The ingredients are in full on the wrapper which is hard to read, and the box itself lacks the full list as the manufacturer wanted to keep the box plain looking!

Consumers, mums especially, have to be vigilant in staying aware of what is in our food. It's not easy.

I have just been diagnosed with ADD, at 54 years old..... I have always known that i had problems learning, and have steered away from learning since i left school, never learned to drive or passed any exams ever. Well never taken any after failing my 11 plus, and upsetting my parents so much.

I think there is a lot to what she says. I have always known my addiction to coffee is not good, and my eating is not perfect. At last i am open to help, and was delighted to read this hub.

i have worked with the elderly all my life, and would love to see more ladies pro active at this age. I would love to meet her. God Bless Her, and all her listen to her, Brilliant./

Dear Jewels. Thank you for bringing this issue of chewing gum ingredients and wrapper ingredient print size to our attention. To tell you the truth, I myself have not chewed gum since I was a teenager. A habit I kicked 40 or so years ago. It seems aspartame has found its way into so many products that people snack on throughout the day. Who knows what it does to the human body and the human brain.

Dear Joy 56 ~ Knowing all along you had certain learning difficulties, you probably found ways of coping, and maybe even dealing with disappointments. Most individuals in my family, including myself, have aspects of ADD, but you know what, we can embrace that! Now, that you have been diagnosed, perhaps it is a turning point, you can reach out to others and provide comfort to them. Good luck in your efforts to change your diet and see what happens next in your journey. Blessings, Debby

In some cases of ADD and ADHD nutrition can be the sole cause of the problem. But not in all cases. As someone who suffers from both ADD and ADHD I have worked on nutrition for the past 10 years to try and solves my problems and they've just got worse.

So clearly in some cases there are other things, which cause the symptoms, in these cases, changing nutrition is not enough.

Wishing you peace and happiness

Poor nutrition, food additives, exposure to toxins, and substance abuse during pregnancy can be contributing factors to this disorder. It basically can affect the development of the child’s brain. Another possible cause can be hereditary, although it is not yet proven.

This hub gives me additional information about ADD / ADHD. The video of Betty Hooper was very useful to explain about Ritalin substance. This is a well written article.
