Great Cholesterol Myth

The Statin drugs that help lower high cholesterol is a $31 billion a year industry. But the statistics show that someone with normal cholesterol has the same chance of a heart attack or stroke as someone with high cholesterol. This is not new and is not a secret. This article was written December 24, 2012.

There is a new (November 1, 2012) book called The Great Cholesterol Myth: Why Lowering Your Cholesterol Won't Prevent Heart Disease-and the Statin-Free Plan That Will by Stephen Sinatra M.D. and Dr. Jonny Bowden (PhD in Nutrition).

They were on the Dr Oz TV show talking about this book. It says that cholesterol is not the thing that damages arteries, it is the inflammation that damages arteries. This books says on page 13:

TWO HUNDRED YEARS AGO physicians routinely bled, purged and plastered their patients. Bloodletting was the standard treatment for a host of diseases and had been so since the time of the philosopher-physician Galen almost 2,000 years before. [Note that Wikipedia says that bloodletting was practiced in the early 1900s and was not questioned at all until the later half of the 19th century (late 1800s).]

Sadly, many doctors today have the same herd mentality as those doctors of yore. By the tens of thousands, they treat a nonexistent disease with drugs that are far from benign [harmless]. And they do so based not on any hard scientific data, but because they, like their colleagues of 200 years ago, are firmly in the grip of group think. What is this nonexistent disease? Elevated cholesterol.

(Page 43) The primary cause of heart disease is inflammation.

But there have been other books with a similar message like The Great Cholesterol Con (2012), The Cholesterol Myths (2002), Ignore the Awkward: How the Cholesterol Myths Are Kept Alive (2010), The Cholesterol Myth: The Biggest Medical Conspiracy of The Last 50 Years (2012), The Great Cholesterol Con: The Truth About What Really Causes Heart Disease and How to Avoid It (2008), The Heart Revolution: The Extraordinary Discovery That Finally Laid the Cholesterol Myth to Rest (2000), The Myth of Cholesterol: Dispelling the Fear and Creating Real Heart Health (2005), The Cholesterol Delusion (2010) and How Statin Drugs Really Lower Cholesterol: And Kill You One Cell at a Time (2012).

The Statin Damage Crises (2012) (see books at the bottom) was written by Duane Graveline M.D. He says:

The outmoded concept of looking at cholesterol numbers as a predictor of cardiovascular risk is increasingly being dismissed as studies point to cholesterol levels as being seemingly irrelevant to the process of atherosclerosis.

The first book mentioned has ways to address heart and cardiovascular health with diet, exercise, supplements and minimizing stress. It says that the other things that are bad for cardiovascular health or may cause the inflammation are oxidation, sugar, processed carbohydrates and stress.

The CDC say that 17% of adult Americans have high cholesterol. So you would think that 83% do not have high cholesterol. But that is not the case since the CDC says "many people do not know that their cholesterol level is too high." So the 17% is the ones that know that they have it.

When cardiologists were asked what increases the chance of a heart attack the most, they said smoking cigarettes. When neurosurgeons were asked what increases the chance of having a stroke the most, they said smoking cigarettes. Smoking does not add cholesterol to the body, but it does cause inflammation!

Originally they thought all cholesterol was bad but now they know that the HDL is good cholesterol that means the more that you have, the better. The LDL is the bad cholesterol. But they have known this for 20 years so they had all that time to change the formula. This shows that the doctors know that cholesterol is not important or they just do not care.

The formula or equation for Total Cholesterol according to the University of California, Berkeley, Wellness Newsletter, is "Total cholesterol = HDL + LDL + (triglycerides รท 5)." Over 200 is considered too high and the higher, the worse for health. But it should not add the HDL to it since that is good, not bad. They have had 20 years to change it.

Let me give you an example. Say that one guy's total cholesterol is 200 and his HDL is 50. Then another guy has the same LDL and the same triglycerides but his HDL (good cholesterol) is 150. That means that he is doing much better than the other guy. But his total cholesterol would be 300 and that is very high. Now if they subtracted the total cholesterol than that would make a lot more sense according to their theory and if cholesterol was really the problem.

It is not a drug but many doctors tell their patients to take it for inflammation. It is also very high in antioxidants. It also gives you an energy boost and helps reduce swelling of muscles and joints.

The Great Cholesterol Myth (2012) book has 35 five star, 4 two star, 2 three star and no one or two star ratings. The Great Cholesterol Con (2012) also has very good ratings of 48 five star, 5 four star, 3 three star, 1 two star and no one star ratings. Ignore the Awkward: How the Cholesterol Myths Are Kept Alive (2010) has 28 five star and no others except for 1 one star. The others are more mixed or not enough reviews.

Note that the article, Latest Science on Health Benefits of a Plant-Based or Vegan Diet tells about how animal foods are inflammatory and it has a list of 70 anti-inflammatory foods and none of them are animal foods or grains.
