The Dangers of Modern Medicine
There is a lot of money spent by pharmaceutical companies and others on advertising the benefits of modern medicine.Consequently,a lot of negative information on the subject does not reach the public domain.Although modern medicine has many advantages and successes, for example in the treatment of trauma and emergencies,it also has disadvantages and failures.
Modern medicine primarily uses surgery, radiation and drugs to facilitate improvements in health and in the treatment of various illnesses. It is primarily involved in the treatment of the sick unlike alternative therapies which also deal with the maintenance of health. In some cases, the therapy offered by conventional medicine is symptomatic management instead of addressing the cause of the illness. This can result in the progression of the disease as necessary lifestyle changes or corrective treatment is not initiated.
There are statistics available suggesting that modern medicine is responsible for many deaths in America annually. The trend in modern medicine has been towards alienating all "competition" from alternative medicine which has characterized the practice of conventional medicine this past century.
There are claims made by modern medicine that alternative therapies are not scientific. To some extent,it is true that the benefits of natural medicine sometimes elude scientific study. The methods used by practitioners of natural medicine may not be scientific but they are effective in some instances even though how this is the case cannot yet be proven.
The risks associated with natural medicine are insignificant compared to those associated with conventional medicine. However,it is important that practitioners of natural medicine do recognise when conventional medicine is more appropriate. It is necessary then for the alternative medicine practitioner to refer onwards to conventional medicine instead of treating the patient ineffectually themselves.
Most people are aware of the over-use and perils of modern medicine but also know that it can sometimes treat illnesses very effectively. It is a matter of having a choice between modern medicine and natural medicine as appropriate because each has a place in the management of disease and the maintenance of health.
The use of drugs in modern medicine all have side-effects which can negatively affect one's health. There is a school of thought which advocates that modern medicine is controlled by the pharmaceutical companies. It suggests that doctors are encouraged to prescribe certain medications for the financial gain of these drug companies.
Mahatma Gandhi is quoted as saying that "I have endeavoured to show that there is no real service of humanity in the profession of medicine and that it is injurious to mankind"
In summary, perhaps the most significant argument that advocates of natural medicine make against the practices of modern medicine is that the use of drugs or other therapies to treat the symptoms while the cause of the disease is not addressed is not effective management.
On balance, perhaps the best approach is for modern medicine and natural medicine to work in tandem as they both have a lot to offer in different ways in the maintenance of health and the treatment of disease.
