Being a mother of four can be a lot for one little heart to handle, so as I go into my year of taking care of me I went to visit a cardiologist. One of my first task was to wear a holter monitor for 48 hours. This was a very interesting experience. I suffer from heart palpitations and in most instances this is not life threatening but it is kind of scary when you feel your heart skip a beat.
This whole experience was really eye opening because I thought about people who have to live with something attached to them on a daily basis and how hard that must be. You have to change everything from how you visit the restroom to planning a shower. Knowing that a little machine is watching also brings about a little extra anxiety. You want to stay calm to have a good report but in a day so many things can get your blood pumping.
What is a Holter monitor ?
A holter monitor is used to keep track of heart rhythms over a period of time. I have been assigned to wear the holter for 48hours. I must admit once you get over the initial butterflies it's not that bad. My family has had a field day with beeper and tape deck jokes but they were all in fun. A log is also given to write down moments when you feel bad or experience being tired, short of breath or anxious.
What is a echocardiography?
I call this an ultrasound of the heart. It's where your valves are reviewed, and they actually listened to my heart during the procedure. This was my second appointment and it was a smooth process I just wish I knew what all my little valves were up to. It was nice to watch my heart beat and it gave me a new motivation for weight loss and trying to live heart healthy.I know that being busy with a family and work gives lot's of excuses but a healthy life I hope will be a much happier one.
I will have to add to this hub when all of the results are reviewed but it was more to share my experience and to encourage you to get heart healthy in 2012.
