Yes - motivation is the key - and sticking with it. Also being kind to yourself and not setting impossible goals that will only end in disappointment! I've taken up swim aerobics lately and find that this is one of the gentlest yet best toning workouts there is - and helps you lose weight. It might not start out that way at first because if you build muscles, you don't lose as much weight at first, but it all ends up coming about in the end! Great hub.

As we grow older,though, our metabolism slows.The tricks for "fast weight loss" don't work anymore for some of us ..(clearing throat..ahem..)older women.(I'm sixty.) I can still lose it, but not nearly as quickly as in my younger days. Sometimes I read an article in magazines about how a dieter lost weight so quickly, and then I notice that she is probably not fifty yet.Her hormones all still "kickin' it" for her.As for me..what hormones?HA!

Hi dkrainwater, I agree ... eating several smaller meals is much healthier and better for your weight. The French do something else most Americans don't do ... they walk a lot! I remember renting a flat in Paris and was shocked that no one thought anything of trudging up to the 4th floor with no elevator. It about killed me every time I brought home groceries, but all that climbing has to help :)

Great hub. I lose weight by using the French method of eating. I eat all day long, almost hourly, but only a few bites at a time. I have lost weight at will using this method most of my life. The three meal a day habit is a killer.

His daughter, I think it's hard to maintain weight loss because many people don't really make a lifestyle change. They may change their eating and exercise for a time, but once the weight is off, they revert back to their old patterns. This is exactly what made them gain weight in the first place. To keep the weight off, we need to modify our behavior not only in the losing process, but in our lifestyle. In short, it needs to be a lifestyle change.
