Tips and Recipes for the Dukan Diet Attack Phase

You'll find below some tips and recipes for the Dukan Diet. The information provided will help anyone already on the diet or who is thinking about starting Dr Pierre Dukan's highly successful weight loss formula the Dukan Diet. This diet is based around the principles of eating a diet which is low in fat and carbohydrate but high in protein.

If you would like a better understanding of this diet and lifestyle program you may find my hub about the Dukan Diet useful. You may also find my hub The Pros and Cons of the Dukan Diet of interest.

Dukan Diet Tip 1 - Be prepared and think ahead.

It is important to drink a lot of water each and every day, and buying bottled water can be very expensive so if you need to drink tap water but like it cool from the refrigerator you need to keep a couple of jugs full of water in your fridge.

You also need to make sure you will have enough water to drink when you are away from home. If you don’t know whether or not you will be able to get water you will need to carry your own water with you.

Dukan Diet Tip 3 - Be organised and keep temptation at bay

If possible stock your fridge, kitchen cupboards and shelves with the correct foods for the stage you are at.

Disclaimer

Please remember that this article and my other articles about the Dukan Diet are written to provide general information and they are not intended nor should they be taken as a recommendation or endorsement of the Dukan Diet. Anyone with medical problems of any nature should see and consult a doctor before embarking on any diet or exercise program and even if you have no known health problems, it is still advisable for you to consult your doctor before you make any major changes to your lifestyle.

Dukan Diet Tip 4 - Pick your time.

The Attack Phase although short is quite extreme as you will only eating protein for between 2 and 10 days. So If you suffer from PMT, or regular migraines try to avoid starting your diet at this time. Also if you will have an extremely stressful period at work or at home try to wait until things are a little calmer and don’t start your diet immediately following an illness as you must give your body time to recover.

Plan your Attack Phase for a time when it will be easy for you to eat just protein. It might be worth taking a few days off work.

Tip 6 for the Dukan Diet - Drink Plenty of Water

Dukan Diet Tip 5 - Don’t go Cold Turkey

You may experience Carb cravings during the protein only Attack Phase. Reducing the level of carbohydrates you eat in the three or four days preceding the start of the Attack Phase

.

Dukan Diet Tip 7 - Plan for trips away or eating out

If you are in the Cruising Weight Loss Phase and need to travel but will only be away for up to five days adjust your pattern so that you eat Proteins and Vegetables while you are away as this will be easier. This planning ahead will also help if you are going out for a meal.

Tip 9 for the Dukan Diet - Use Mustard to add Variety

Dukan Diet Tip 8 - Enjoy your food

If this diet and lifestyle plan is going to be successful you will be following it for the rest of your life. If you aren’t enjoying what you are eating you are going to find sticking to this diet very hard. In the early stages this may need some effort and creativity but remember that you can use vinegar and all herbs and spices freely as well as a small amount of mustard.

Dukan Diet Tip 10 - Read my Hub

Recipes

As I said you will need effort and/or creativity or a little help from your friends or from wherever you can get it to give yourself the greatest chance of success. I must admit that I don’t think I would have ever thought of using grilled flat mushrooms as the bun for my burger.

Following the Dukan Diet doesn’t mean that yummy desserts are the thing of the past as I found a very easy recipe which you can flavor differently to ring the changes.

Yummy Dukan Dessert (for four people)

  • 6 free range egg yolks
  • 16 fl oz fat free/skimmed milk
  • ¼ tsp cornflour
  • Artificial sweetener
  • The flavoring of your choice such as coffee or vanilla
  1. Add the cornflour to the egg yolks and whisk well
  2. Gently heat the milk in a saucepan and add your flavouring and sweetener of choice
  3. When the milk is warm add the egg mixture and keep stirring until the mixture thickens sufficiently to stick to the back of the mixing spoon
  4. Pour into the individual dishes or dish of your choice
  5. Place in the refrigerator until set.

Dukan Diet Recipe - Rich and Creamy Hot Chocolate

I also found a quick and delicious recipe for Hot Chocolate.

Rich and Creamy Hot Chocolate

  • 1 heaped tsp of unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 heaped tablespoon of fat free/skimmed milk powder
  • Artificial sweetener
  • 1 mug of fat free/skimmed milk
  1. Add the cocoa powder and milk powder to your mug
  2. Mix to a smooth paste using a small amount of the milk
  3. Whisk in the rest of the milk into mug
  4. Place in the microwave for 1 to 2 minutes.
  5. Sweeten to taste
  6. Enjoy!

Hi Zeldy

Cornstarch or corn flour is a tolerated item like the cocoa powder and should only be added from Cruise but it can be used on PV and PP days.

Amber:)

Zeldy 4 years ago

Thanks for your answer!

How come cornstarch that are used in recipes only allowed on Protein Day and not on PP + Vegetable Cruise day?

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi Zeldy

You need to use a reduced fat cocoa powder as well as one without added sugar and you are only allowed one teaspoon a day as one of the tolerated items in the Cruise Phase.

Amber:)

Zeldy 4 years ago

When I make a recipe called for cocoa. Many are sold unsweetened. But it still has some fat in it? How is it allowed?

Thanks for the amazing support!!! Keep it up:)

Hi Heba

I'm afraid Dr Dukan doesn't allow any substitution of the oat bran for any other food but everyone on the Dukan Diet is also allowed one tablespoon of wheat bran each day.

Amber:)

heba 4 years ago

hi amber, i didn't find oat bran in the stores, can i used regular white bran

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi Angela

Any fat free natural yogurt should be fine. When you've moved into Cruise and can have fruit yogurts as one of your tolerated items both Sainsburys and Tesco sell Irish Yogurts that only contain fat free yogurt, fruit and sweetener.

In addition to the oat bran you are also allowed one tablespoon of wheat bran each day to help with constipation and this is quite low in calories.

Amber:)

Angela 4 years ago

Hi Amber,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.

I live in London so it is certainly not a hot climate to live in :0) I am relieved it is not the Twinnings because drinking that is certainly a healthier option to wine!

I am really angry with myself for eating the wrong type of yogurt. The front of the carton states 0% fat which is obviously very misleading unless you really know what you are looking for. Are there any yogurts natural or flavoured that you would recommend for me please? I don’t mind the natural flavour as I add my oat bran to this in the evening. I have just bought some wheat bran today to help move nature on so to speak which I have got ready to put into my vanilla yogurt. I think I will give that idea a miss now.

Thank you so much once again :0)

Angela

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi Angela

The Twinnings tea should not be causing the problem but you may be drinking too much fluids. Try to drink between 1.5 to 2 litres each day unless you live somewhere hot or exercise a lot when you would be able to have more.

Dr Dukan recommends eating your oat bran at the time of day you tend to feel the most hungry. If this is in the evening that is the time to eat it. You should also try to eat your last meal about 2 hours before bedtime.

The two main problems that prevent weight loss in the Attack Phase are constipation and water retention both of which are usually just temporary.

Yeo Valley Vanilla Yogurt contains added sugar and tapioca so doesn't meet the rules set down by Dr Dukan. It contains Organic fat free yogurt (88%), organic sugar, organic invert sugar syrup, organic tapioca starch, organic vanilla extract, organic concentrated lemon juice, organic vanilla powder. The vanilla flavour has 87 calories per 100g while the natural one which is OK to eat has just 59.

Amber:)

Angela 4 years ago

Hi Amber, I hope you could give me some advice if you may please? I am on day three of the attack phase and have not dropped even 1 pound. Which is very disheartening. I have been drinking cups of lemon and ginger tea (Twinnings). I would often have a glass of wine during the day at work and without fail a few more glasses in the evening at home. So drinking Twinnings is my alternative, could this be the reason behind this? I drink well over 1.5 lts of water a day, whether dieting or not as I don't drink tea or coffee. I also have been eating one pot Yeo Valley fat free yogurt (vanilla of natural) and including my oat bran in my evening bowl before bed. I am right in thinking that you would advise to eat the oat bran in the evening? Sorry, but I have looked at so much advise and comments, it can be quite confusing. I restricted to the amounts of yogurt I should be eating? Sorry about so many questions and I thank you in advance :0)

Hi Pauline

The dairy products should be 2% fat or less. Can you get any of the foods either online or in a specialist health food store?

Amber:)

Pauline 4 years ago

thanks for that. l will look for other types of yogurt, does the greek yogurt have to be fat free or can it be low fat. What shall l look for as it is very hard in melbourne, not much choices and l cant find the sugar free cocoa either. any suggestions would be great.thanking you again Pauline :)

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi Pauline

The problem with the frozen yogurts is that they aren't just frozen yogurt! These yogurts have added sugars and other ingredients. Here is an ingredients list from a frozen zero fat yogurt chosen at random

Nonfat Milk, Sugar, Corn Syrup, Maltodextrin, Mono And Diglycerides, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Locust Bean Gum, Cellulose Gum, Guar Gum, Carrageenan, Tapioca Starch-Modified, Annatto (Color), Live Active Yogurt Cultures Including L. Acidophilus And Bifidobacterium.

So I'm afraid the answer is no.:(

Amber:)

Pauline 4 years ago

hi just want to know if frozen yogurt from those machines at ice-cream shops allowed?

l believe they are 99% fat free. :)

Began dukan 7 days ago as attempt to ease IBS,results have been amazing so far! Attack phase for two days as weigh 9 st so weight loss not primary reason for diet.

Tucking into loads of allowed veg on PV days and oat bran+ plenty of water has eliminated risks of constipation so far.I have really noticed increased energy and no more bloating/stomach cramps I suffered in the evenings.

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi twisted

My guess would be that you are suffering with some water retention due to being pre menopausal and you are certainly drinking a lot of water. This might be something that your body has been able to cope with in the past it is worth considering that things can and do change. It might also be worth asking your doctor to check out your thyroid and to see if he would recommend you using a diuretic.

The Dukan Diet is not designed to be used in conjunction with fat blasters and most followers tend to eat quite a lot of dairy so I'm not sure that the Dukan Diet is the right one for you. This doesn't mean that you can't follow it but it is going to be more difficult.

Amber:)

twisted 4 years ago

this may sound just wrong but im contemplating starting this diet but as im in real need to lose at least 7 kgs in the next week for a job requirement ..... would there be any benefit or risk in doing the attack phase and taking fatblaster or something like that at the same time.... i really am desperate ..... i don't drink alcohole or tea or coffee and have already cut out fizzy drink.... i don't like any kind of dairy except Romano cheese but i have cut that out as well since last friday.... i do drink about 3 to 4 liters of water per day and always have.... i was shocked today to find that i have actually put on even more weight in the last 3day....i am 45 years old and have never been over 100kg until today... now 103kg... i just don't get it ....my cloths still fit the same as they did 2 months ago at 93kgs.. i wear a size 16 jeans and an 18 top....and most people are shocked when i tell them how heavy i am.... apparently i don't look it so iv been told... i have started pre menopause if any1 has any ideas please help me.... i walk every day .... and have lost over 26 kgs about 7 years ago.... but it has slowly crept back on and more.. :( i am feeling really lost right now

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi chibimara

You do need to keep the pan on the heat after you've added the egg mixture and keep stirring until the mixture thickens sufficiently to stick to the back of the mixing spoon.

Keeping it on the stove means that the mixture will continue to heat up and this is why you need to keep stirring it or the mixture will burn on the bottom of the pan.

Hope you have better luck next time!

Amber:)

chibimira 4 years ago

Weird... I followed the instructions but mine just refused to thicken. Maybe I'll try again and cross my fingers this time LOL

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi again chibimira

It is the heat which thickens the eggs and cornflour/cornstarch. Getting it too hot would have burnt the milk but shouldn't have prevented it thickening.

Amber:)

chibimira 4 years ago

It looked thick, but I don't think it was thickening at all. Maybe I had the milk to warm?

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi chibimira

I would have expected it to have set by now. Did you thicken the mixture enough when heating?

Amber:)

chibimira 4 years ago

Quick question about the 'yummy Dukan dessert', how long is it supposed to be in the fridge to set? Mine is still pretty runny and it's been in there about 3-4 hours.

Amber Allen profile image

Hi Headmelter

The Stabilisation Phase is a little more flexible as you don't need to monitor what you eat apart from Dukan Thursday when you eat almost exclusively protein.

If you have a system that works for you I'd stick with it.

Amber:)

Headmelter 4 years ago

Useful and effective method to lose weight, but as a long term lifestyle choice I'm not so sure.

Monitoring carb and refined sugar intake along with a regular exercise routine when a target weight is reached would be much more preferential....... for me any way.

Amber Allen profile image

Amber Allen 4 years ago Author

Hi Elaine

Alcohol is not allowed. Dr Dukan says "Drinking alcohol when you are dieting will prevent you from achieving motivating results and this is why it is not allowed."

Zero Coke or Zero Sprite can both be drunk on the Dukan Diet. Rather than drink your Coke or Sprite from a large glass use a small one so that it looks the same as your drink would if it were alcoholic.

Amber:)

Elaine 4 years ago

Hi Amber,

I read on another website thats its OK to drink coke zero. Im on day 3 of attack phase and doing well, was down 3lb this morning. Im just concerned that if I go out for a night i won't know what to drink. I was thinking maybe vodka and sprite zero?

Hi Hayley

Are you sure that you should be looking to weigh 100lbs or less? Unless you are quite small this is a very low weight indeed.

Amber:)

Hayley 5 years ago

Hi Guys,

Just wondered if anyone can help - I've been eating pure protein as directed for the last 7 days and appear to have lost virtually nothing, when I stood on the scales after the first 2 -3 days I'd lost around 4-5 lbs but appear now to have put most of that back on yet i've done absolutely nothing differently or wrong to my knowledge, i've also been counting my calorie intake and tracking online and have been eating under 1000 kcals per day so surely by proxy I should be losing?? Any ideas / suggestions anyone had the same thing? Driving me mad. I weigh around 121 lbs .. want to be 100 or less and have no issue with will power if i'm seeing the result but this is now just a tad depressing.. may as well eat!

(nb: I drink the rda of water if not more)

Any ideas???

Thanks,

Hayley

Hi Bronwen

Dr Dukan doesn't allow the use of protein shakes other than in an emergency to prevent you eating something worse. This is because his program works using real natural proteins not powdered ones. If you don't eat a lot of meat you could try the fish or the vegetarian options of tofu, textured soy products and plain Quorn.

Amber:)

Hi ju1244

The protein bar was a better choice than the cheese.

Eating while away from home is difficult and you need see if you can fit in a daily trip to a supermarket or store to buy suitable food and if staying in a hotel you need to make the most sensible choices you can. It is something which you need to plan into your day.

Amber:)

ju1244 5 years ago

In cruise phase and traveling so much so it just isn't possible to find protein everywhere-Ive eaten all my zero sugar protein bars this trip (delays etc) Just ate a bar with 11g protein and 10 g sugar (its the lowest I could find on my pp day) what to do in future? I think it had to be smarter than full fat cheese, right?

Hi lexie

How much weight you lose on the Dukan Diet or any other diet can vary greatly as there are so many different factors to take into account such as whether you were already trying to lose weight, how much weight you need to lose, your monthly hormone cycle, what food and drink you had and so on.

Losing two pounds a week is about the right rate at which to lose weight according to the experts so try not to be discouraged.

Amber:)

Hi, I've now been on the cruise phase for 7 days following a five day attack phase and have lost 8lb. I'm really pleased with the result so far and it's been surprisingly easy. I ensure I have fat free Greek yoghurt and fat free fromage frais ready in the fridge and if I need a chocolate fix I add a teaspoon of good quality cocoa powder and sweetener to either one which makes a lovely pud. I also have boiled eggs ready in the fridge in case I get the munchies but thus far I've not gone hungry. Another benefit I've found is I feel a lot more energetic and my skin appears a lot clearer. I'm definitely sticking to this diet. :0)

Appreciate the feedback. I've not been having anywhere close to a kg and only the fat free no added sugar or the plain and add stevia which I have with my oat bran (which I really enjoy). Amber Allen 5 years ago Author

Hi Letitia

As the permitted dairy foods have carbs in the form of natural sugar it is best to limit yourself to 1kg of fat free dairy per day. If you are having problems losing weight you can cut this limit in half.

You are looking for a fat free no sugar added yogurt which isn't quite the same as sugar free. I find it easier to buy plain yogurts and add sweetener and flavoring myself.

Good Luck!

I have read Dr Pierre Dukan's book and am on day 6 of the attack phase. I have only lost 200 grams so far (thought would have lost more) and am wondering if the no fat yogurts are to blame. The book says they are fine but all of them have sugar or at least I've not found any fat free AND sugar free yogurts. Do you know of any in Australia that are suitable. Or perhaps I'm just being impatient and the weight will fall off in a big drop soon. I'm keen to know because I'm REALLY trying to lose weight. Hope you can help,

Hi Emma

Try these four tips

1. Cut back on what you eat during the day leading up to your meal out.

2. Just before you leave have something to eat and drink so you don't feel so hungry.

3. Volunteer to drive so you don't drink.

4. Make the best food and drink choices you can from what is available.

I have tried this diet once about 3 months ago for 3 weeks and lost about 10kg, fell off the wagon but have gotten back on.

Suprisingly I only gained 500g from what I lost so it was easy enough to keep off. Have been on Attack Phase for 2 days and lost another kilo. Planning on a 10 day attack this time.

There is also a nice website http://www.mydukandiet.com/recipes/index.html to get some recipes - had the porridge this morning, talk about yummy. I will have to try the Hot Chocolate from here tonight though. Thanks for the extra advice, now I just have to convince the other 4 people in the house to go on it.

Hi Umnaz

The cravings normally ease after 3 or 4 days but not always.

Try chewing a small amount of lean ham or beef but chew it really well before you swallow it and then drink a glass of water.

You can use sweeteners and still enjoy your tea but long term it would be great to try and phase yourself off sugar in your tea. Try making your tea weaker with more zero fat/skim milk and see how you get on. It does take a while to become used to the taste and once you get used to weak milky tea you can then start to increase the strength and reduce the amount of milk used.

I'm so pleased that you luv the recipes I've put in my hubs.

Best wishes to you and your husband in your quest to lose weight together.

now on day 12 of this diet and have already lost 5.2 (11.4 lbs) kilos and it is great! Not the least bit hungry, thanks to creative ways of eating the oat and wheat bran every morning---totally psyched as the the big results so fast keep me very very motivated! read the whole book before starting and it all makes total sense, especially the 'rest of your life' parts! love it and already love the surprised looks from friends!

I've never heard of this diet, either. Good advice to check with your medical professional before going to any extremes.

Hello edguider

Although the diet has been around a long time it has only recently been translated from French so it is not that well known outside of France.

I hadn't heard of this diet either. It is basically the protein diet huh? Sort of like Atkins?

Never even heard of the dukan diet, thanks for putting it in such detail :)

This sounds like a very interesting diet to go on. I like the idea of doing something for the rest of my life, if it works. I can not wait until there is no stress going on in my life because I live a very fast paced life. I am going to give it a try any way. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Pamela

Thanks for being the first to comment. A hot chocolate drink should help any chocoholics!

This is an interesting and short term you can do most anything but I don't think it would be healthy long term. Its great you found a hot chocolate for the diet as I wouldn't have expected that.
