Top 5 Health and Beauty Uses For Banana Peels

Updated on November 6, 2016

People LOVE to eat bananas and for good reason. Not only do bananas taste good, they are good for you. Unfortunately people throw away the banana peel without realizing that they are letting something special go to waste. The banana peel is the most nutritionally dense part of the banana and there are many ways to get a lot of use out of the banana peel. Here are the top five health and beauty uses for banana peels:

1. Wart Treatment

There are a few wart treatments on the market, but many contain harsh chemicals that can do more harm than good. Here is a simple way to use a banana peel to treat a wart. Cut a piece of the banana peel off about the size of a small square (enough to completely cover the wart) and place the inside of the banana peel on the wart. Adhere the banana peel in place with tape or a plastic bandage. Leave it on overnight. Repeat each night as needed.

2. Teeth Whitening

Getting your teeth whitened can be very expensive. Here is a much simpler, and cost effective way to whiten your teeth. Cut off a small piece of the banana peel, and rub the inside of the banana peel over your teeth. The banana peel will remove the surface stains that are on your teeth.Repeat once a day, preferably at night, or as often as needed.

3. Itchy Insect Bites

When venturing outside or into a highly wooded area, it is easy to come in contact with various types of insects. Most insects will not bother you, but there are some that can fly around and bite you leaving your skin feeling very itchy. Sometimes people will spray various chemicals or pour rubbing alcohol onto their skin to help reduce the itching. Because banana skins are highly inflammatory people can actually use them to help reduce the itching without drying out their skin.

Rub the inside of the banana peel on the area where you are itchy, and it will help to reduce the itchiness you are feeling. It will also help to reduce the inflammation overall.

4. Facial Mask

Facial masks are a great way to help rejuvenate your skin. Here is a simple face mask you can create using banana peels:

After washing and peeling the bananas, chop up the banana peels, and add some coconut milk to a blender. Blend until you have a nice smooth mixture that you can apply to your face as a skin care face mask. You can also cut off two pieces of the banana skin to apply to the under eye area to reduce the bags under your eyes.

5. Eat Banana Skins for health

Since most people think banana skins are toxic, they tend to throw them in the garbage without a second thought. As mentioned previously, the banana peel is the most nutritionally dense part of the banana. There are several ways you can enjoy banana peels as a healthy snack. Here is a quick recipe for roasted bananas with cinnamon and dark chocolate (leave on the skins for an extra nutritional boost)!
