Introduction

Peritol is a brand name of Cyproheptadine. It has many actions and one of most commonly utilized is its serotonin antagonist action. This action makes it a good appetite stimulant. In addition, Peritol inhibits histamine receptors. Therefore, it works as an Anti-histamine medication such as Piriton. Pertiol also causes drowsiness and helps to induce sleep. Anti-histamine indications are common cold, and allergies.

Peritol should not be used for sleep. Zolpidem is a medication that can be used for sleep problems.

Common uses of Peritol

1. Appetite atimulant

2. Anti histamine (common cold, allergies)

3. Sleep inducing agent : - effect wanes after some time.

4. Treatment of drug induced akathisia : A troublesome side effect of some anti-psychotic medications.

How to use peritol

Usual dosage of peritol is 4mg thrice daily. That is 10ml of peritol syrup thrice daily.

What are the side effects of Peritol?

Main side effect of peritol is its ability to cause drowsiness and sedation. This action makes driving vehicles and operating machinery dangerous. In addition, drowsiness goes into next day morning and to make waking early morning difficult.

Peritol can cause weight gain due to its ability to increase appetite. In addition, using Peritol to induce appetite in a patient with an underlying disease (cancer) without investigating the cause for loss of appetite can be dangerous. In some countries this medication is available over the counter.

Dry mouth

Blurred vision

Gastro-intestinal disturbances

Rare side-effects of Peritol are low blood pressure, palpitations, arrhythmias, dizziness, confusion, depression, sleep disturbances, tremors, fits, liver problems, and angle-closure glaucoma.

Peritol is available as tablets, capsules and syrups. It should ideally be taken in the night. Elderly people will get most of the side effects. In addition, it is not recommended to use Peritol in children.

This drug should not be used in patients with prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, in people susceptibility to angle-closure glaucoma, and in intestinal obstruction. Peritol should not be taken if you have liver diseases. It is because peritol can induce coma in liver failure. In addition, taking peritol to induce appetite without seeking a cause for appetite loss can be dangerous (some chronic diseases can cause appetite loss such as Tuberculosis).

Pregnancy and breast feeding

Peritol should be avoided in pregnancy. Newborn irritability, paradoxical excitability, and tremor can occur following delivery. In addition, Peritol should not be used in mothers who are breast-feeding.

Yes will weight will be lossed once it is stopped. Unless proper cause for weight loss is found

It is unlikely. But it is safe not to take it in first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
