Ways To Get Simplicity Into Your Life

Having a Simple Life yet Still Happy

Nowadays so many thousands of people in the world do not have a simple lifeand many are so unhappy due to the stress they are under to just make ends meet. I had came up with an idea that made my life happier and simpler and would like to share this with everyone that reads this. There are many ways to get simplicity into your life and yet still be happy, and as a matter of fact, in my case much much happier.

Many that read this may think I am crazy, and in the beginning I thought to myself, that I might be just dreaming and crazy as well.

First off, I took a hard look at my life and where I was heading in the future. Would I be house poor forever I asked myself? Will I ever get my head above water and be able to breathe a sigh of relief with the burden of all the bills and expenses my wife and I now have? Will our life ever get easier or will I have to work like a dog until the day I die?

The more I thought about my life and what I was doing just to make ends meet was ridiculous. My wife and I toyed with may ideas that could help make us live a more simple life, and all of sudden my wife came up with a brainstorm idea.

As many that know us, we both were raised at the Jersey Shore and both of us through our thirty years of marriage always tried to figure out a way to live at the Jersey Shore full time and not just summers as we were brought up doing. Summers were just not enough for us and when she hit me with this idea I was a bit hesitant thinking this would never work.

We put the plan into action and began thinking of what we could do to get to the Jersey Shore full time and retire in that same place we had grown to love throughout our lives.

This idea consisted of down sizing big time. This idea consisted of selling our home that I inherited by my parents, and the home I was born in a grew up in as a child until I was married. I was more than willing to sell this home if it would make our life more simple, meaning no more high taxes, the expense itself just to run the house and up keep. There must be a way to have it much easier in life and to enjoy this short life we have here on earth.

Gas and Electric bills were high. The upkeep of the home and yard was beginning to be too much for us as we worked full and were getting older. Between working full time jobs and keeping up with the maintenance and repairs of the home, we had no time to even have a relaxing time together. Don't get me wrong, we love our home and were very proud of it and what we have done to it. Every home we bought we remodeled it from top to bottom and this home was no different. A complete remodel as well, inside and out.

So with that said, something had to be done, and changed, in order for us to have some fun times together once in our life. So the house went up for sale and we started to go through all the things we had saved though out the thirty years of marriage. My wife considered me a pack rat, and she was right. I did save everything. I was and still am kind of a sentimental person, but sometimes you just have to let go and start cleaning out, and that's exactly what we did.

The Search Began to Find Freedom

We set out to find our home by the Sea and to have financial freedom. Many people said, what we were doing was insane and crazy, meaning that all the hard work and money we put into the home that was now going up for sale was going to history and gone. I said yes, you may call us crazy, but I am sure you will be visiting when we find our home by the Sea.

The idea that my wife came up with and I spoke of earlier was to find a 55+ mobile home Community that was at the Jersey Shore. We search for months, and one day our Realtor asked if we looked into one certain place and we said, no we did not. She told us where this Community of 55+ was and we went to check it out. As soon as we saw just how clean and small the Community was, with only about 50 homes we fell in love with the place admittedly.

We went through a few homes, but most of them were not large enough for us, and the Master bedroom was certainly not large enough for our California King bed. I told the Realtor we can not buy a single wide home for the reason of not enough space.

There were a couple double wide modular homes for sale, but the price was way over what I wanted to pay and it would defeat our purpose totally. I finally found a double wide home up on a hill and in the middle of the circle of home, but it needed tons a work on the inside and out. My wife said, "no way" we are not going to have to remodel again are we?

I saw beyond the work involved in which I was so use to doing from the previous homes we had lived in. I knew that this home could be made a palace and for a minimum amount of money. The work involved was a lot, but I didn't mind because it was where we wanted to be and I was going to make it happen and finally have our home by the Sea. Just to smell the salt air when you go outside your home is worth more than any amount of money to me.

The house for sale was sold, and the new place was totally remodeled and ready to move in. Paid cash for the home and all materials and appliances. We now had a brand new home inside and out with no mortgage hanging over our heads for 25 more years. We are both stress free and worry free. We are living our dream and living life simple, yet very happy.

Sure we gave up our home and down sized, but our life now is simple and clutter free. I never realize that you can have a happy life with minimum material things. We pay out $460.00 per month HOA fee which includes, taxes, water, sewer, trash pickup, snow removal if any, club house and a beautiful pool. I have nothing to worry about except the HOA fees and our monthly utilities, gas, electric and of course cable. That's it!

Any one can think of ways to get simplicity into your life and yet still be happy, and in most cases, such as mine, stress free. To have the freedom and not be bogged down with worries of being house poor or where the next dollar will come from to continue to pay those high mortgage payments is worth every bit of living within your means. Homes are so beautiful and so many are huge, but just to have a roof over your head it doesn't have to be a mansion, it can be any home. Your home is what you make it. We have a roof over our heads, and at a minimum amount of money to do so. We finally figured out what was the most important thing in life and that is to be happy and not live beyond our means. We made financial mistakes through our married life and i am sure many others have done the same. I knew nothing would get better unless we fixed the problem. We got out from under and got the home of our dreams to boot, plus a home at the Jersey Shore. So, everything worked out just as we planned.

If you feel as if your are over your heads in debt and need to find a way out, think about something like we did. I never thought it would work out, but it did, and we are some real happy people right now.

That's not crazy at all. It makes a lot of sense to me. Thanks for sharing so that people understand how having less stuff means greater happiness. Seems like most people got it opposite and think that obtaining more stuff will increase happiness -- which in reality is false.

BlissfulWriter, Thanks for the comment and for reading. I once thought that material thing made people happy and that's not the case at all. For some material things are great when first bought and then the years of payments put a huge damper on that once happy feeling. Less Is More !!!

I am proud of you! I agree...less is more! It is nice to "unload" which can represent many things. Happiness is more important! Voted up!

Great hub! I think more people would be happy doing this. You don't need stuff or big houses to make you happy. Simple life, is a better life. Kudos to you for following your dream.

Hard to believe until you try it, huh. I, too, believe in simplifying my life. Although I do it a different way, it works wonders. Enjoy. Sandra Busby

We did the same thing in our own way. People thought we were crazing to give up executive careers and the suburban life on Long Island. I am so much happier and at peace living a quieter life in the country, freelancing. You have to follow your heart and use your head! Thank you for a good article.

I've been leaning this way for a while, but I'm having trouble convincing my husband. He is 3 years younger than me, so maybe in 2 more yrs, he'll start to see my (our) point, lol.

Jeanne Grunert, I am so happy for you Jeanne. Taking changes in life can be a good thing, but so many people are not willing to do that and they remain where they are for the rest of their lives. My next step is to just up the career of 24 years. Enjoy your life with the family and out in the country

With the present economic crunch, many people are down sizing because they have no choice. It's the attitude that money and "stuffs" are related to happiness that makes the transition harder. Your experience show that this is not true. Happiness does not come from external sources but from within. There is wisdom in profound simplicity.

SilentReed, It is very nice to meet you and thank you for reading and your comment. After many years of me wanting the very best I have now realized that having the best didn't make me happy in the end. I am thrilled with how my life is now living it simple and happy.

well said thecleanlife...with the recession continuing...we ought to make our life simple in every aspect and still be enjoying our life.

voted up as useful and interesting hub...cheers!

Ruchira It is nice to see you again and thank you for your comment. I truly believe that people nowadays should start to think of ways to live more simple , just because of the way our ecconemy is today. In the end as things stay the way they are and as our recession continues you will hopefully have a handle on your life and begin to be happy with just living simple.

Excellent hub and great subliminal advice! Downsizing and simplifying was the best thing i have ever done in my life - maybe even saving my life! I gave up an all consuming career that offered income and a nervous breakdown - joined a tai chi class, bought a little (but lovely) condo - and have never been happier! I whole-heartedly recommend it! We don't need half of what we have! Give it to someone who does! voting up, obviously..

ImKarn23, Thank you so much for your comment and good for you that you are so happy. I know I should of done this years ago, but it's never too late to change right? So many people just don't realize , like you and I how downsizing and cleaning out can make you so happy. You and I did it and I hope others will follow our ideas. It certainly makes life a happy one for sure. Thank you for the Vote Up too.

I just bought a beautiful fixer upper in wildwood nj on the bay. Cantwait to get to work on it. Does anybody know of a good recommended contractor that does these roof over additions (pole barn roofs)right over your exsisting mobile home? Haven't seen much to this subject thru google. Thanks

@ Glenn Congrats on you new home and to be right on the bay is awesome. I just moved here at the shore lately so I know no one that does that. I too bought a fixer upper double wide modular home. Rancher and it is like brand new inside and out. I wish you all the luck and happiness here at the Jersey Shore!!
