Nausea or morning sickness is inevitable during pregnancy. It cannot be eliminated. In fact, it is an indication that the woman's body is producing requisite amount of hormones which are required for normal delivery. It normally stops after the first trimester, when hormone levels stop climbing, but some women experience it throughout their pregnancy.
Nausea prevents woman from having nutritious food. She just does not feel like having anything. She feels aversion towards foods which she used to enjoy earlier! This can be dangerous to both mother and child, as they will be deprived of essential nutrition. Excessive nausea can be dangerous. It may lead to Hyperemesis Gravidarum. Her nausea and vomiting is severe. It causes dehydration, weight loss, pale skin, rapid heartbeat, headache, confusion and exhaustion. If not treated, the woman may starting vomiting blood. This can be very dangerous for both mother and the child.
Nausea can be handled effectively. There are as many home remedies as there are traditions in this world. Normally women have found saltine crackers and ginger ale to be effective. Having fruits and nuts also helps. It is recommended that pregnant woman have small, frequent meals, high is protein and complex carbohydrates. She should also have lot of fluids like fruit juice to counter the dangers of dehydration. It is important that the mother eats before she feels hungry. Also care has to be taken that she eats before going to bed. Physicians generally prescribe vitamin B6. Some women eliminate nausea during pregnancy to some extent by just smelling common kitchen items like lemon and ginger. Some ladies have found the use of acupressure wrist bands to be effective. After throwing up, it is a good practice to brush, or at least rinse. Deep breathing and a long walk in fresh air is very effective in eliminating nausea to some extent. Yoga and meditation definitely helps, but this should be done after consulting your physician. The aroma of lavender and rose give relief to some ladies. Cranial Osteopathy also provides effective relief. Pregnant woman should not lie down right after eating. She should take lot of rest and avoid anxiety.
Nausea during pregnancy can not be eliminated, but can be effectively handled by being patient, with the understanding that it is a passing phase. The love and understanding of near and dear ones goes a long way in helping the mother in this.
