What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep Apnea is a sleep disorder characterized by reduction or pause of breathing during sleep. Each pause is called apnea that may last from few seconds to minutes. This may occur very frequently about 5- 30 times or more in an hour. Each abnormal slow breathing event is called hypopnea.

Normally breathing start after every attack and some times with loud snort or choking sound. Sleep apnea is a chronic condition that disrupts normal sleep cycles.

Adult Sleep Apnea

Sleep Apnea has been a cause of sleepless nights for quite a number of people leading to most of them trying to find out what causes sleep apnea in adults. The different causes of sleep Apnea in adults can be placed into two categories and the first of these two categories is obstructive. This kind occurs when blockages and obstructions occur and this could be due to large tonsils, adenoids and obesity, irregular physical stature and weakened throat muscles.

1. Obesity

As far as obesity is concerned, weight gain makes you prone to sleep apnea as fatty tissues deposits will gather in your throat and this will cause narrowing of your airways. This will cause your snores to be louder which will in the end wake you up. Sleep apnea is known to affect the hormone levels in people’s bodies. The Leptin levels that suppress appetite are reduced while the Grehlin levels that increase appetite are increased. This often leads to the sufferer of the condition undergoing a vicious cycle that will see them add more weight.

2. Obstructive pulmonary disorders

There are some conditions that have been known to contribute to sleep apnea in adults and are brought up when people wonder what causes sleep apnea in adults. The obstructive pulmonary condition at its chronic stage, Asthma, excessive stress, allergies are some of these conditions. If you sleep in a constricting condition you are likely to get the condition as well.

3. Other causes

The other causes of sleep apnea are categorized as central and they are neurodegenerative diseases, strokes, neurological disorders, radiotherapy and surgical complications. In more susceptible people, a problem could occur when after taking drugs and alcohol, they cause their breathing system’s muscles to relax which could lead to the sleeping condition. Another well known risk factor will be damaging the surfaces of the lung by smoking and bad news in the same vein is that passive smokers are affected as well.

Unknown to many people, age comes up when people want to find out what causes sleep apnea in adults. With the passing of time, people lose some muscles mass along with their elasticity and this often causes blockage to the airways leading to breathing problems and congestion. It is also believed in some quarters that it could be a genetic problem and you should check into your family history to known if someone else suffered from the condition.

Researchers have attributed most of the medical conditions we are facing nowadays to stress and sadly sleep apnea is one of these conditions. Stress comes in various forms and they usually take the form of family-related, work-related and the simple kinds that come up when you are overwhelmed. You should try as much as possible to avoid stress. Sleep apnea abounds and while those who are already affected should try the appropriate means of treatment, those with the condition should try all the preventive measures not to get it.
