All of a sudden my wife started gaining weight, we went to a physician and he ordered a battery of lab tests. The lab report came with the info that the TSH levels are abnormally high, which means hypothyroidism. TSH levels mean thyroid-stimulating hormone. It increases to stimulate our thyroid when our body is producing lesser thyroid hormone. I knew the natural remedy and got it treated with that which I have detailed below.

What Causes Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism could be caused due to any of the below-mentioned reasons:

a) Thyroid-related disease, such as lymphocytic thyroiditis or Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

b) Autoimmune thyroid disease of the thyroid gland.

c) Destruction of thyroid tissue due to general surgery, radiosurgery, or radioactive iodine which leads to thyroid deficiency.

d) Diseases related to pituitary gland or hypothalamus gland.

e) Medications which inhibits production of thyroid production.

f) Iodine deficiency is one of the direct hypothyroidism causes.

What Is The Function Of The Thyroid Gland

Thyroid gland produces hormones which are responsible for normal functioning of our body. Its function includes controlling metabolic activities, heart rate and its functioning, skeletal development, endocrinal activity, etc.

Hypothyroid Symptoms

We can detect if we are suffering from hypothyroidism if we have few of the following symptoms:

a) Change in the normal menstrual cycle is one of the major hypothyroid symptoms in women.

b) Menometrorrhagia — Abnormal or heavy bleeding from the uterus both at the normal menstrual cycle or in between menstrual cycle.

c) Thickening of endometrial lining — Females have a certain thickening of the endometrial layer. If it thickens more than that and discharges along with blood, this also denotes abnormal thyroid functioning.

d) A few other symptoms could be linked to thyroid hormone dysfunction such as constipation, depression, hair loss, fatigue, slow heart rate, swollen thyroid gland, more than expected weight gain, and growth deficiency in baby.

NOTE: Female are more prone to thyroid hormone imbalance than men.

How Is Hypothyroidism Treated

Hypothyroidism is absolutely correctible without any medication and through yoga poses which is a natural remedy. This will not only treat your problem at that time but strengthen your thyroid gland for whole life. The yoga poses are known as Ujjayi Pranayama and Anulom-Vilom which are basically breathing techniques.

To Perform Pranayama We Need Two Things:

1). A mat to sit.

2). Sukhasana Posture. It is a very comfortable posture to perform many kind of yoga poses. Personally, I sit in this sukhasana posture to perform yoga poses like Ujjayi Pranayama and Anulom-Vilom. In this posture, you need to sit upon your buttocks with your legs folded and crossed over each other. You need to held your back straight and hands in Gyan Mudra, i.e., both your palms should be placed over the knees and pressing your index finger against your thumb with your palm side being up.

How To Perform Ujjayi Pranayama — Yoga Poses

a) Sit in a mat in "Sukhasana Posture" with hands in "Gyan Mudra" which I have described above.

b) Breath in slowly concentrating your epiglottis where the thyroid gland is situated. You need to squeeze, constrict and pressurize this thyroid area while inhaling using the surrounding muscle and fill up slowly your abdomen, lungs, and throat. While inhaling pressurizing your epiglottis or thyroid area in the neck will make a hissing sound.

c) Similarly you need to exhale slowly squeezing your neck area where thyroid is situated.

d) Keep on doing this for 10 minutes at a time. Continuous doing this for a few months will strengthen and massage your thyroid gland and you will be completely cured off your hypothyroid symptoms.

Along with this yoga poses just after doing this for 10 minutes, you need to do the below-mentioned yoga pose for added benefits.

How To Perform Anulom Vilom — Yoga Poses

This mother of all deep breathing yoga technique is good for overall health and has proven track record to cure millions of people suffering from a variety of problems.

a) Again, sit in a mat in "Sukhasana Posture" and "Gyan Mudra" as detailed above. Now, place your right thumb over your right nostril and press it and then slowly inhale a long deep breath through your left nostril.

e) Now hold onto your breath for a few seconds.

f) Place your little or middle finger over your left nostril and press it and raise your thumb from your right nostril and start slowly breathing out through the right nostril.

g) After breathing out, inhale slowly and deeply through your right nostril and hold your breath for a few seconds.

h) Keep doing this in summer for 10 minutes and in winter for 15 minutes.

Caution: Pregnant women and heart patients should consult a yoga instructor before performing Anulom Vilom breathing technique.

My wife after doing the above-mentioned breathing techniques for 3 months got the lab results done and her thyroid is now perfectly functioning.

What a freakin' cool hub. I don't have hypothyroidism but my mom does. I'm always on the alert to see if I get it - right now I'm the same as age she was when she got it. I've always had really cold hands and feet and prone to being cold; I might try these yoga exercises just to see if it helps my cold hands. Thanks so much for sharing this! I am going to try this. I have not been diagnosed with anything (I don't trust doctors very much) but everything has been off balance lately. I have also gained a lot of weight, but that could be stress. Thanks for your advice!
