What Is Muscle Confusion?

Everything You Need to Know

One of the hottest buzzwords in health and fitness today is muscle confusion. It seems like every day there’s a new product going on and on about how it “maximizes muscle confusion to give you amazing results”. The most popular of these programs of course is P90X. On this hub I’m going to go over the basics of muscle confusion; what it is, why you should use it, and why it’s so important.


Why Muscle Confusion Is Important


Aside from all of the other amazing things the human body can do, it is, at its core, a learning machine. From the time we’re born, until the day we die, our bodies are always learning. We learn how to read, how to write, how to walk, talk, run, jump, and play. The way we learn these things is through repetition. We do them over and over, and as we do, they become easier and easier. Well the same thing goes with our workouts. If you go to the gym every day and do the exact same exercise, eventually you’ll reach a point where the exercise no longer benefits you. This is where muscle confusion comes into play.

As our bodies become accustomed to doing work, the amount of effort and energy required to do that work decreases. For example: let’s say you do a cardio workout that burns two hundred calories an hour. If you continue to do that same workout every day, the amount of calories it burns will gradually start to decrease, since it takes your body much less effort to complete that work out.


What Muscle Confusion Does

When you look at any kind of workout program, you will we see a wide variety of exercises. Muscle confusion is the reason behind this. By constantly varying the type and intensity of your workout, you prevent your muscles from becoming accustomed to the workload. In the past, you may have heard this referred to as “avoiding a plateau”. By integrating a wide variety of exercises, and alternating between high and low intensity workouts, you can ensure that you are maintaining maximum effectiveness during your workout.

Even though it’s starting to find its way into the mainstream, bodybuilders have known about muscle confusion for years. If you glance through any of the workouts of top bodybuilders, you won’t see the same exercises over and over. Now while their goal was to increase overall muscular size and definition, muscle confusion also plays a large part in strength training as well. If you’ve ever played sports you’ll remember that practice wasn’t the same thing over and over again, there is always a wide variety of drills and exercises involve.


What All This Means for You

Regardless of what your fitness goals are, whether it be to lose weight and get in shape, or improve your performance during sports, muscle confusion will play a large part in helping you be successful. There are some great sites out there filled with workouts that can help you maximize your effort. One of my personal favorites is Zuzka Light. It’s a completely free website that has daily workouts designed to get you in shape through high-intensity interval training, and it is my biggest recommendation for anyone looking for a great workout.
