What is Happiness? Happiness is.....
...Best of times
"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness.. ." written by Charles Dickens for his novel, "A Tale of Two Cities" in 1839. Think about it...doesn't it describe today?
We can make our own 'best of times' by not letting the 'worst of times' get in our way! Each day we have the opportunity to start anew and look for the good things in our lives, the things that make us happy. Happiness is defined as "the quality or state of being happy". We can do that, really. We can ensure our happiness comes from within. What is happiness to you?
Happiness and Friends
Rita Mae Brown said, "One of the keys to happiness is a bad memory." Of course that is easier for some of us than it is for others, but discounting our ability to forget things naturally, why not forget the bad things? Another line I found with no attributable author is "Every life has its dark and cheerful hours. Happiness comes from choosing which to remember." Why not let go of the hurts and hateful things that happened before right now? They aren't doing us any good anyway. Isn't it nicer to remember the good things and the happy times? Doesn't that bring happiness? Forget about the past and the bad times, remember the good times...maybe when you were a teenager or when you were in college. Remember those frat parties? Remember that first kiss,or when you drove your first car?
Someone said, "Life’s truest happiness is found in friendships we make along the way." That's surely an easy one! You have friends all around you (especially here on hub pages.) Friends you known for years and friends you've just met. Friends can bring you happiness just by being your friend. I'm not talking about the friends who stab you in the back or desert you, certainly they are not your friends....and plotting against them won't make you happy. If they're that miserable, they own the problem, not you. Feel sorry for them and be happy you're not them!
How about hanging out with happy people? Won't that make you happy, especially if those happy people happen to be your friends in the first place! Everyone wants to find happiness and if we just look around it really is right there to find. Okay, so before you go out and find happiness, what about where you live? Does it make you happy? It doesn't have to be a mansion in a ritzy neighborhood....it just needs to be a happy place. You can make it a happy place by fixing it the way you want it.
Where you work may not make you happy, after all it might not be the job you chose, but you can try to find something there that makes you happy. What about the woman in cubicle B with her dress starting to split because her behind is too big...makes you laugh anyway and laughter can lead to happiness or be happy you don't have to stay there more than eight hours and then you get to go home to that happy place!
Okay, so what is happiness to you?
- Seeing an old friend
- Taking a bubble bath after a long day
- Finding your car keys
- Petting a dog
- Holding a baby
- Having lunch with a friend
- A nice cold can of beer
- Helping others
- Losing 5 lbs. the first week of your new diet
- Buying a new car
What about laughing? Laughing makes you happy, it makes everyone happy. Not only does it make everyone happy but its contagious. If one person starts laughing and doesn't stop, pretty soon everyone will be laughing. Now you're all sitting around laughing and even though you don't know what you're laughing at, you're happy!
What about your dog or cat? Don't they bring you happiness? Whenever you come home, no matter what your mood, there's your dog with tail wagging, happy to see you. Aren't you happy to see him too? He loves you unconditionally and always will, let him cheer you up. We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have, but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have. Frederick Keonig
Happiness Can Be What You Make It
As you can see, happiness can be what you make it. Don't let it pass you by and don't walk around feeling sorry for yourself...my father used to tell me all the time "there's always someone worse off than you"...of course at the times he told me that I didn't particularly care because I was feeling 'worse off' but I knew what he meant. "I cried because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet." Anonymous That saying kind of says it all. We're not always as bad as we think we are. Yes, you may have lost your job, but what about the guy who lost his job and has ten kids? Yes, the darn car broke down again, but what about the family that doesn't have a car? I know when things aren't going your way you'd rather shoot 'Suzie Sunshine' than listen to the brighter side of things, but when you think about it, she is right.
Helping others can make you happy. Volunteer somewhere, visit a cemetery, stop in at a nursing home and spend some time, remember our soldiers by sending them something or participating in a ceremony. So many ways to be happy while making others happy.
What about music? Doesn't music make you happy? The sound of the instruments, the rhythm and beat, or the beautiful voice singing a song...it can relax you and soothe you and when your relaxed and soothed you should be happy!
If you know me then you know this is one thing I would certainly say can make you happy; gardening. Think about it...out in the fresh air and sunshine seeing the beauty of nature all around you. (Never mind that darn mole, you'll get him later.) That beautiful butterfly stopping on a nearby flower, or the hummingbird at your feeder, or the little frog peeking out from under a lily pad! What about the lily floating by the lily pad? There's nothing like nature to brighten a mood and make you happy.
Happiness isn't always easy. Sometimes we really have to work hard at it. Don't listen to the news for a day...tune out all the doom and gloom going on around you. Instead, count your blessings. Think of all the good in your life. Love yourself so you can then love others...
“I’m not in this world to live up to your expectations and you’re not in this world to live up to mine.” Bruce Lee Do what you know is right and what makes you happy.
Happiness is loving your life! Find the good things in your life and cherish them. Tell your loved ones you love them, make time for yourself and be happy! Do I dare say, "Don't worry be happy?"
