What is The PCA Program And Do You Have One In Your State

Source

The PCA program (personal care attendant) is set up to help people who no longer can care for themselves but want to stay in their homes and not go into a nursing home. The program can work two ways, the family can hire a person who is a PCA to care for their loved ones or a family member or care giver can become a PCA for their loved one, but a husband cannot be a PCA for his wife and his wife cannot be her husband PCA. Also it can be used if you have a child who is handicap you could hire a PCA to care for them.

You may want to check and see if in your state it is set up like this, because I am telling you how it works in my state to give a outline of what the PCA program is and how it can help out families .Also you can find on your states PCA site people who are register there has PCA’s that you can hire to care for your love ones, but you will need to be on the PCA program first .Run a search for the PCA program in your state to see if your state does have one .

Massachusetts State PCA Progran Web Site

Hiring a PCA to care for a love one will cost you no out of pocket money, it is a state funded program that will pay the PCA to care for your family member, and to it will pay a family member to do the same thing. If you are already a family members care giver then it will be much easier to become that person’s PCA and you may only have to be certified in CPR.

Talk to your family member’s doctor or nurse practitioner and see if the PCA program is right for your family member, it will help in the long run if the physician or nurse practitioner or both approve the idea of a PCA for your love one, it will also help when the state sends a team from the PCA program to conduct an evaluation, which will describe your love one’s personal care needs in detail, and recommend how many hours of PCA services they may need each week. and then it will be sent to the state program team to determine if the PCA services will be approved for you.

You can get PCA services in your home even if you have other services such has, Visiting Nurse, Occupational or Physical Therapy, or Home Health Care services.

Tasks a PCA my do in a person home will depend on the care your family member may need, but here are just a few thing that a PCA could be required to do .

PCAs can help with these activities

• Mobility and Transfers
• Medications
• Bathing and grooming
• Dressing and undressing
• Range of Motion exercises
• Help with Eating
• Toileting

• Shopping
• Laundry
• Meal Preparation
• Housekeeping

The PCA program is set up so that the individual with the disability is the employer. Much different from more common home health care programs in which an agency provides the worker. The PCA program is designed to give individuals with disabilities control over how their own personal care needs are met and who they will hire to help them with the things that they can no longer do by them self any more .

Many elders and people with disabilities of all ages need assistance with their personal care needs and other daily activities. They need to hire a personal care assistant, or PCA .

Do you have what it takes to be a PCA ? Check the list below to see.

Do you: Have patience and common sense

Feel that individuals with disabilities are entitled to the same support, respect, and quality of life as anybody else

Want to do work that is personally enriching and rewarding, than you may have what it takes to be a PCA, maybe for a family member or even a friend . Check out what the requirements in your state are for becoming a PCA or for getting PCA services for your family member, it is a better way to provide great care for the ones you love and still keep them in their homes and with no cost to you .

Great hub and very interesting system.

I agree with Ethel Smith, there are similar schemes in the UK that would work very well, but they are always in the firing line for the first cuts. Then these poor people end up in nursing homes or hospital when they don't need to and this costs about 6 times as much as having a good home carer system.

kashmir56 profile image

kashmir56 5 years ago from Massachusetts Author

Hi Seeker7 nice to see you, It's a shame that they cut your program in the UK, it would help those who wish to stay in their home and get the care they need at a lower cost.

Thanks so much for stopping by and to for your nice comments !

Hi Kashmir, very useful information, for people looking for care for parents, or themselves. I really believe that allowing older people to stay at home is such a good idea, if at all possible. Great idea for a hub. Well written and informative.

kashmir56 profile image

kashmir56 5 years ago from Massachusetts Author

Hi prairieprincess nice to see you, glad to hear you found the information in the hub useful . It is good if people use the service of a PCA because the cost of going into a nursing home here in the U.S. is very expensive . Thanks so much for your nice comments and to for stopping by !

Have a great rest of the week my friend !!!

kashmir56,

As a community nurse in PA I have seen this program work beautifully for all of the reasons you have written/ commented.

I had a situation where a brother was paid to be a PCA-- worked out great.

Time and time again, when a spouse (or direct loved one) is the primary paid (or unpaid) caregiver, there is potential for tremendous burnout, depression and the worst case scenario of abuse (of some kind...) It is almost next to impossible for one person to "do it all".

Just an observation from some years out there...

This was just wonderful and voted UP & UABI, mar.

Hi marcoujor nice to see you, Yes you are so right about the PCA program, it does work great and it pays PCA's well to.

Thanks so much for your nice comments and to for stopping by ! And also for your vote up and uabi !!!

In the state I live in, they call it in-home care. I use to work for an elderly couple through an agency. The agency was set up simular to what you just described. When I moved on from the agency, the couple called me and asked if I would do private in-home care. It was an enjoyable experience to help others out. Every now and then I still will get a call from someone looking for in-home care. If a state doesn't have this kind of set up, I would recommend starting one for anyone who enjoyes helping others. Great hub!

Hi tlpoague nice to see you, thanks so much for your comments and to for stopping by ! In all the states i searched for most have a PCA program and it is called the PCA program. in home care is not the same thing because my mom had that as well . PCA's do not work for a agency or hired by agency , they are either family members or PCA's who are registered on their states PCA program site .

Hi Kashmir-When I was going through chemo and radiation, my twin sister got set up as my PCA. She was already caring for me but was now able to get paid for it. Once I felt better, I began working as a PCA to give back. It's a GREAT program and worth every cent. There is nothing better than having family take care of you. Great article!

I find this very useful and came back to read it once more. When you reach a certain age, movement that was once easy becomes difficult. This should be a program that is applied to every state. Some of them gave everything that they could. It is time we give back.

Hi thelyricwriter nice to see you, yes you are right and i think this is one of the reasons this program was designed for to help those who needed it now and to so they could stay in their homes and not to have to go to a nursing home which cost much more. Thanks so much for your nice comments and to for stopping by !

The PCA program sounds like a wonderful way for people in need of personal care to remain in their own homes. You've provided really useful information that I'm sure will prompt some people who need this service into investigating further.

I also noted the graphic, and I was impressed that it is your own work! It is perfect for this hub!

i am in need of answers, can someone help? i live in indiana and i wanted to become a pca for my sister but i don't know which program to go through. my sister is blind and i have to handle all of her business, shopping and help to care for her child. we went to fssa but they were not willing to help. is there another place we can go?

kashmir56 profile image

kashmir56 4 years ago from Massachusetts Author

Hi lisa32 nice to see you, the first thing you need to do is get your sister on the PCA program, and her doctor my be able to help you do that. Just tell him you want to become your sisters PCA on the states PCA program. I just checked and your state has a PCA program but i do not know how it works for your state .They will send some people down to your sisters home to see if she does qualify to get on the PCA program, and then if she gets on the PCA program she can hire you as her PCA and the state will pay you to do that. Please let me know if you need any more help or information. Thanks so much for stopping by and to for your nice comments !

I checked out something like this in NC for my mom a few years back since I was taking care of her anyway but they said if a family member did it they had to have quit a job to do it (after the fact) in order to receive the pay. Made no sense. I am not certain it was PCA though.

My mom has passed on but this is a very good thing to tell people about.

Voted up.

kashmir56 profile image

kashmir56 4 years ago from Massachusetts Author

Hi Pollyannalana nice to see you, I think the reason they asked you to quit your job is because they wanted you to be caring for your mom full time. I have taking care of my mom and after my mom passed away i took care of another woman on this program who passed away ten month later. Just in that short time i made over eight thousand dollars because this program is a good paying program. Thanks so much for your nice comments and to for stopping by !

I had not heard of this and just checked with Google. In Texas it only concerns the care of foster children and would not apply to scenarios such as in Massachusetts and perhaps other states. Wonder if then Gov. Mitt Romney had anything to do with this being instituted? Sounds like a great program! Up votes and sharing!

Please tell all wartime veterans and their spouses that there is an attendance program with the VA that will pay up to $4,000 per month! The VA will pay for the support that the doctor orders. These programs actually cut medical costs by getting to problems before they are at the acute stages and require repeated and horrendously expensive hospitalizations. The vet has to have been on active duty during wartime. Reservists must have had their unit activated for at least one day to qualify as a wartime vet.

Call the VA benefits adviser or visit the VA website. This is a little known program..

kashmir56 profile image

Hi Peggy nice to see you, no Gov. Mitt Romney had nothing to do with putting this program in place in my state it has been up and running since 1995. Sorry to here Texas it only concerns the care of foster children, but many other states give the full coverage has i explain in this hub. Thanks so much for your up vote and share !
