White Spots On Skin

White spots or ‘Vitiligo Leucoderma’ is a skin disease where white patches appear on the skin. White spots is not an uncommon disease but is susceptible to be infected by all regardless of the different geographical resident, gender or race.  Even though this ailment is not dangerous, it is difficult to cure. However, there are numerous treatments both at home and in clinics to help cure white spots.

To treat ourselves from this ailment, there is a need to understand the causes behind white spots. White spots can be caused by genetic or environmental reasons. Thus, before any treatment had been taken, it is best that the causes of white spots on one patient are known as the wrong type of treatment may be taken and this may worsen the condition of the patient.

Firstly, let’s talk about white spots caused by genetic factors. One of the genetic factors is insufficiency of adrenal gland in our body. The responsibility of adrenal gland is to produce a hormone known as ‘corticosteroid’ in our body. When there is a lack of this hormone, white spots will start to appear on the skin. A possible treatment for this cause will be to apply corticosteroid cream.

An environmental factor is the insufficiency of sunlight. Cells responsible for the colour of the skin are known as melanocytes. Due to lack of sunlight, melanocytes become inactive and do not function properly. Thus, one treatment will be to expose the skin to a long period of sunlight to get the cells to be active again. Another more effective but more costly treatment will be to transplant the cells form one part of the body to the affected skin area. But be careful, overexposure to sunlight can also result in sunspots on skin.

Sudden Outbreak of White Spots on Skin

If there is a sudden outbreak of white spots around your body, especially at the folds of skin, it probably means that you are suffering from a yeast or fungus infection. These white spots on arm especially affect sports people who sweat a lot. White spots can be caused by yeast called ‘tinea versicolor’. These yeasts are omnipresent but not harmful. However, when one is prone to heat, humidity and oily skin, their skin can convert this yeast into forms that cause rash and white spots.

A doctor should be seen immediately to prevent the spread of the infection. Proper medications such as antibiotics or antifungal cream will be prescribed according to your situation. Chances are that your infection will subside in a few days. Over-the-counter creams are also available at local drugstores or pharmacies, and depending on the seriousness of your infection, the pharmacist will prescribe you with the most appropriate creams. These creams are generally inexpensive and safe to use, and will clear up your infection in about 10-14 days. You can use Lotrimin and Trinactin cream, which is to be applied twice a day on affected areas. This is the commonly used cream as advised by doctors and specialists.

Treatment for White Spots on Skin

White spots are normally treated under light, oral prescription, cream to control the spread and artificial phototherapy. Today more than modern medicine, traditional medication such as self healing with energy retained thru meditation is widely used. Yoga, Tai Chi and other energy healing methods are becoming more and more popular amongst the west.

Over the counter creams like Corticosteroid cream, Lotrimin and Trinactin are often prescribed and you should follow the correct steps to applying such creams:

1)    Wash the areas affected by the white spots thoroughly and rinse away trace of cleanser.

2)    Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing it.

3)    Apply the cream evenly to all affected areas

4)    Massage the cream gently into the skin.

5)    Wash your hands afterwards, provided that your hands are not affected by white spots.

6)    Do not apply the cream more than twice a day. It is best to obey the instructions that the doctor or pharmacist had given you.

7)    If you want to apply any creams or ointments on the same spots of the skin, wait for a time interval of half an hour before applying.

Although cosmetics can be used to cover up the areas affected by white spots, it is advised that it is best to go for a treatment as soon as possible before the condition of the white spots get too serious. This is because cosmetics are only a short term solution to people affected by white spots. A better long term solution is to go get treated.
